The Havelock Chamber of Commerce is proud to welcome the Whitehurst-Ware Post No. 539 of the American Legion as our newest Chamber Partner. This esteemed organization has long been a pillar of support for veterans, military personnel, their families, and our broader community.
Founded to honor Ensign Henry P. Whitehurst, USN, and Specialist Bobby M. Ware, USA, Post 539 exemplifies dedication to service. Their members, representing all five branches of the military and spanning conflicts from World War II to the present, bring a wealth of experience and commitment to our community.
Post 539's initiatives, such as the Poppy Drive, Wreaths Across America, and support for programs like Tar Heel Girls State and Tar Heel Boys State, have made significant impacts. These programs not only honor our fallen heroes but also invest in the leadership development of our youth.
Their involvement in events like "March for the 22," a 22-mile hike to raise awareness and end veteran suicide, showcases their proactive approach to addressing critical issues facing our veterans. This year’s march will take place on Veteran’s Day and will start at the AMC Theater in Havelock!
By joining the Havelock Chamber, Post 539 strengthens our collective mission to foster a robust economic and community environment. Their presence enriches our network, and we look forward to collaborating on initiatives that benefit both our veterans and the wider community.

CarolinaEast Foundation Accepting Online Applications for Nursing Scholarships
Nearly $520,000 awarded since Scholarship inception
The CarolinaEast Foundation will be awarding nursing scholarships this year, made possible through the Joseph Hageman Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund, the Robert and Beatrice Honnet Nursing Scholarship Fund, the David Elliot Nursing Scholarship Fund, and the Dereck Whittenburg Foundation. Nursing scholarships are available for full-time students enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, an Associate’s Degree in Nursing, enrolled in the LPN to ADN Transition Program leading to licensure as a Registered Nurse, or the Practical Nursing Program leading to licensure as an LPN. Applications are due by Friday, April 18, 2025 and will be awarded over the summer.
The Joseph Hageman Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund is named in honor and in memory of Mr. Joe Hageman, an exceptional nurse and employee of CarolinaEast Health System, who passed away in 2006. As part of the Hageman Nursing Scholarship program, the Robert and Beatrice Honnet Nursing Scholarship Fund was created in memory of Beatrice Speight Honnet, upon her passing, to fulfill her hopes of supporting a student returning to school later in life.
Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $8,000 for students pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN). Scholarships will also be awarded for those pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) or enrolled in the LPN to ADN Transition Program in the amount of $3,500. $3,000 scholarships will be available for those students pursuing a diploma in Practical Nursing leading to licensure as an LPN. Applicants for these scholarships must be a resident of Craven, Carteret, Jones, Onslow, or Pamlico counties.
Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $3,500 for CarolinaEast Health System employees that are pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, a Master of Science Degree in Nursing, or a Nurse Practitioner Degree. Applicants for these scholarships must be employed by CarolinaEast Health System.
Once again, the CarolinaEast Foundation will be awarding a Hageman Alumni Scholarship in the amount of $5,000. This scholarship will provide past Hageman Scholarship recipients an opportunity to pursue advanced nursing degrees.
In 2024, the CarolinaEast Foundation awarded 58,000 in scholarships to 13 local nursing students. Since the first nursing scholarship was given in 2007, a total of $516,500 has been awarded to 142 nursing students.
This year, the Foundation will only be accepting mail-in applications until Friday, April 18, 2025. No late submissions will be accepted. Mailed submissions must be postmarked by the aforementioned date. Information and PDF versions of the applications for the Joseph Hageman Memorial Nursing Scholarship can be found on the CarolinaEast Foundation’s website at www.carolinaeastfoundation.com. Please call the CarolinaEast Foundation at 252-633-8247 with questions.
