Historical Tidbit:

 Artifacts
A Burrill Story
During all of my life my Father, Frank W. Burrill, worked at he Bridgewater Savings Bank as an officer.

In the late 1940's, when I was around 7 or 8, my father went to a location, a little south of the junction of Vernon Street and Beech Streets in Bridgewater. A little to the south of that road junction the Taunton River makes a 270 degree turn to the southeast. At that bend in the river on the west side, there had been a long time ago, a Native American settlement.

A friend of my father's named Bill Taylor was the owner of the property on the east side of the Taunton River at that bend. I remember with Bill Taylor, my father, and our family, we began digging for Native artifacts, arrow heads, etc.

I think this went on just during that summer. My father on several occasions, as we all would, would get into a hole and dig up the dirt that had been excavated. Then the dirt would be examined for artifacts.

During one such time, Bill Taylor took a picture of my father digging in a hole. Bill then had the photo enlarged to maybe 8.5 x 11 inches . Bill took that photo to the Bridgewater Town Hall and posted it on a bulletin board with the title, "The Bridgewater Savings Bank in a Hole".

It was then, I think, that my father stopped any association he had with digging for artifacts.

Avocado Tree Growing Indoors in Massachusetts
By Gregory Venezia
Something you might not know...You can grow avocado trees indoors here in Massachusetts. You start them in water until they sprout roots. Then pot them in dirt.

I put the pit in a plastic container filled with water and push toothpicks in the pit to suspend it over the water. I've heard that some people have simply put them in a plastic bag with water, and that worked for then. Then I put them in a pot of dirt. I used dirt from my garden.

I put the pits in water some time before September. They take a while to start growing roots, so it could have been a month or two.
In September 2018, it began to grow roots.
In December 2018, it began to sprout leaves.
In January, the leaves got pretty big.
The picture to the left is the most recent photo I have of a few of the plants I'm growing. From left to right the plants are passion fruit vine, jack fruit, avocado tree, & passion fruit vine. All the fruit to grow these plants can be purchased from the grocery store.

The avocado plant is starting to wilt, but I think that is from over watering, so with less frequent watering I hope to see it perk back up. The sunny weather should help too.

I like gardening because if something doesn't work you still learn something, and you can do better next time.

Badminton
by Deena Anzum, BuzzAround Intern
In the summertime when my cousins come over, we like to play badminton together. On the weekends when the weather is nice, we usually have barbecue parties. While the food is cooking, all the cousins get together and play. We usually like to form teams of two. Badminton is very enjoyable. It gets everyone energized and feels great when we get a continuous run. Sometimes the birdie will hit one of our faces and everyone laughs. Some of us even fall trying to catch the birdie.

My uncle was a badminton player back in the day so sometimes he would join. However, since he is a professional, he plays hard and even the good players cannot keep up! As a kid, my mother also played with her friends. So, she would join as well. It is even more fun when everyone joins in!
One summer, all the parents came together and joined the kids so we had two big groups. We do not follow any of the usual rules for badminton. We just play for fun. We take turns serving and usually whichever side the birdie lands is the team that would serve. For example, if it lands on my team's side, then my team would serve.

With all this free time... outdoor activity is perfect!
Old Bridgewater Historical Society Announced Lecture titled "Banned to Bawdy: Theater in America"

Sunday, March 29th
2p, doors open at 1:30p
Memorial Building
162 Howard St, WB
Many of the Colonies forbade playacting on the grounds that it was morally detrimental. Two centuries later Reverend Smythe urged his congregation to avoid the Black Crook with its scantily clad dancers. Members of his congregation promptly rushed out to buy tickets! Theater has been used to ridicule, persuade, titillate, amuse and outrage audiences from every class. This lecture takes a look at the evolution of theater from clandestine Colonial performances that landed the players in court to Vaudeville shows that packed theaters.
Presented by Anne Barrett, who for more than 10 years has been entertaining and educating audiences with her lectures and performances at dozens of libraries, historical societies, museums, and other civic and social groups throughout New England. She is a member of the daughters of the American Revolution, and a former Mrs. Essex County.
Sponsored by the Bridgewater Savings Bank and hosted by the Old Bridgewater Historical Society. Admission is free; a $5 donation is suggested. Light refreshments will be served.

Socializing with Science
"Social Distancing" is a tool being put into place for large, close gatherings (sporting events, concerts) to slow the spread of this respiratory virus, a needed precaution. Due to this and the barrage of media attention, we at the BuzzAround suggest some simple ways to remain social & active in your community.

Here is some science on the spread of Covid-19: It is water droplets from a sick person getting into your body that will spread it. If it’s safe for you, all other life activities should continue. We need interaction with others, and it's a great time to be outside. Show your love & compassion.

Here are some suggestions for those that are able: 1) Take a walk or ride a bike around your neighborhood. Last night I was walking my dog and a neighborhood kid stopped and talked to me. We had a fun conversation. I am never disappointed checking out my neighborhood.
2) Shop at a locally owned store: Infamous for never being too busy, local shops are fun nooks of helpfulness and original items. If you don't see what you want, ask the owner or clerk to find something for you. They will go out of their way to help you. Talk about feeling loved!
3) Keep yourself healthy. Stay hydrated, get enough sleep and eat plenty of vegetables & fruit. If you don't recognize a word on a food's ingredient list, don't eat it!
4) Stay active in your local community & keep in touch with folks around you, if not in person, then by phone & messages.
5) If you have a fever or cough, please keep out of social interactions. And even if you don't present with symptoms, know that you can slow the spread of respiratory illness with frequent hand washing and being mindful of a 6-foot boundary around your mouth, nose & eyes.
And here is some social science: We are all in this together. Know your stuff and take care of yourself, but don't create an unhealthy lifestyle by isolating yourself.
Whatever challenges you face today, don't face them alone. ~ Jacquie

Black Lives Matter Film &
Discussion Series
Tuesday, March 24th
7pm
50 School St.
This month's installment in our Black Lives Matter film series, "The Hate U Give", is a heartbreaking reminder of the still-lingering racial divide, specifically in the education system. Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds -- the poor, mostly black neighborhood where she lives and the wealthy, mostly white prep school that she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is soon shattered when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer. Facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and decide to stand up for what's right.
