YOUR WEEKLY UPDATE - October 21, 2026

A Message from Our Pastor

The Tutoring Our Neighbors (ToN) program meets in Fellowship Hall on Wednesdays during the school year and it is based upon a very basic principle that is foundational to any mission: relationship.

In my missiology courses in seminary, I learned that shared discipleship and partnership are what make any mission project good, faithful, and most of all, sustainable. It's not about a person or organization of privilege helping those who are "less fortunate," or assuming that you know what's best for them and so you are in charge of determining what help they really need. No, mission work is Christ's work, and thus it should look like Christ's own mission and ministry! And if there's anything we know about Jesus, it's that he was constantly meeting people where they were and building relationships with them.

That's what ToN is all about. For decades now, Patrick Cunningham, a teacher at Love School, has been building relationships with students and their families; and we are a big part of it! Our volunteers, many of whom are not members but friends of our church, form relationships with kids from Love School so they can encourage them, uplift them, and inspire them to excel in school socially, academically, and creatively. The program involves one-on-one tutoring as well as group activities ranging from mixed media art projects to singing songs with our ToN Troubadour, Noel Calhoun. But at the heart of it— even though it is a secular-focused program— are the relationships that bloom from the Love of God that these kids experience when they are here with us.

Your pledges give space for these relationships to naturally breathe and grow! By supporting ToN, you are directly supporting an intergenerational mission that bolsters Jamestown Public Schools and greatly benefits the children in our school district. ToN helps kids feel like they are a part of something more than just their regular studies. It helps them be truly seen and feel deeply loved in a way that is more personal and impactful. ToN exposes the children of our community to beauty, truth, and goodness found within a holy community, and we don't even have to break out the Bibles to do it! We simply accept each and every student for who they are and celebrate the gifts they bring, all the while we offer our own gifts to help them flourish! And without even knowing it, Love starts to change us all.

I will be honest, Friends, in saying that sometimes I get a little frustrated when members of our congregation say things like "gosh, if only we had more kids here," simply because we don't have a pew stuffed full of them on Sunday. Don't get me wrong, I would be delighted to have a row full every Sunday, but these kinds of statements usually develop from a false assumption that because we don't have kids on Sunday, we must not have any at all!

But this church serves dozens of children each and every day, and our ToN program welcomes nearly 20 every Wednesday! Your pledges help us engage these kids and reach out to even more. Your support makes First Pres a place that children feel Loved and accepted, a place that they look forward to coming to each week. Don't believe me? Show up around 3:00 on a Wednesday and see how much joy our building can hold :)

Jesus says, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven." (Matthew 18:3). This is not a threat from Jesus, but rather a keen observation: The joy of children is something we are called to nurture and grow with as much as we help them grow. In building relationships with our children, we not only change them but they change us! Your pledges provide an opportunity for our church to be at the heart of these beautiful changes. You help us create a holy community for the children in our area who most need it. Your pledges help our children truly feel the Love of God. And in the process, you too are changed.

A thank you from the grandfather reads...

"Once again I cannot express our gratitude and how much we appreciate everything you all have done for our family. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!"

Everything was a huge success. It was like Christmas morning for the kids.

Thank you from the Missions Committee also!!!

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY NURSE HONOR GUARD AT BLOOM MEMORIAL

On Saturday, October 17, the Chautauqua County Nurse Honor Guard performed The Nightingale Tribute Ceremony at the Witness to the Resurrection service for retired nurse Cynthia Marie Bloom.

Members of the Honor Guard leading the ceremony were Amy Newhall, Connie Tonger, and Debbie Johnston. Rev. J. Davis Creach led the service. Music was provided by David Horne.

ALPHA CIRCLE CONVENES AT CHAUTAUQUA

On October 14, members of Alpha Circle gathered for the buffet at the Athenaeum’s Heirloom Restaurant . Donna Beal gave the meditation, which followed the theme of the program, “Women of the Bible.” Catherine Willard then presented a dramatic interpretation of the story of Esther and Xerxes, as those present gathered around her in a true circle to listen.

This story about the biblical salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia became the root of the Jewish holiday, Purim.

COUNTDOWN TO THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION: January 10th, 2027

Our sanctuary will officially be 100 years old on January 2nd, 2027 and we will celebrate this milestone on Sunday, January 10th, 2027. As we approach this date, we have some special Adult Christian Ed classes that you won't want to miss!

October 18th and 25th: Rev. J. Davis Creach will lead a 2-week course on theological architecture; we will spend the first week exploring some of the basics of what makes a church "a church" before moving into the sanctuary the following week to explore its theological motifs.

November 22nd: Dr. John P. Smagner, our dear friend who helped get the church on the National Register of Historic Places, will be visiting us to give a presentation on the history and design of our sanctuary, focusing especially on the man behind this beautiful building: Ralph Adams Cram.

We hope you will join us for Adult Christian Ed beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays in the Merwin Fellowship Hall. And be sure to stay tuned for more Centennial Celebration news!

RUMMAGE SALE COMING!

While putting summer things away and getting warm clothing out, please remember our fall rummage sale planned for October 31st from 9am – 2pm. We’ll be accepting warm winter apparel for all ages, household goods, office supplies, tools, toys, books, holiday items (Thanksgiving and Christmas) and pretty much anything that is light enough for one person to carry.

RUMMAGE SALE UPDATE...

Many thanks to those who have already donated warm winter clothing, household/fall holiday items, children’s clothing/toys and much more it looks like! We forgot to mention that we will gladly accept unopened hygiene things like the small shampoo, soap and lotion items from motels/hotels/cruise ships and packaged tooth brushes, tooth paste, dental floss etc. These hygiene items will not be sold, but will be given to JOY FELLOWSHIP for their participants who need them.

As always, we ask that spring/summer items be stored by you for our spring sale (we have no place to store them) and please, NO electronics or children’s car seats and only items that can be carried by one person because many of our “browsers” walk to the sale.

Because our room is filling up fast, we know we’ll need more volunteers, especially to set up on Friday, the 30th. We’ve got 11 volunteers so far with 7 of them helping to set up. If you can help set up anytime Friday morning, with the 9am – 2pm sale on Saturday or with clean-up on Saturday starting at about 1pm please let Joanne Nelson know. And please feel free to drop in at any of the above times, even if you didn’t sign up, to help if you’d like to.

Thank you so much for your willingness to help us in this very worthwhile “help for our community neighbors in need” event! With blessings and deep appreciation, the “Rummage Sale Ladies”.

Donations can be dropped off in the meeting room off of Fellowship Hall, or you can just leave them inside the 6th Street entrance and let someone from the office know that its there.

In anticipation of your help and another great sale, the Rummage Sale Ladies thank you!
