Standoff at Venezuelan Embassy in DC

CINDY DOMINGO -- Chair, WILPF US Cuba & Bolivarian Alliance Committee.
Cindy just returned from a fact finding visit to Cuba and will discuss the complicated interests of the US in imposing sanctions on Cuba and Venezuela,
and Trump's end game.

MEDEA BENJAMIN -- Representing Code Pink, part of #HandsOffVenezuela campaign. Medea just returned from a fact finding trip to Colombia & Venezuela, Medea has insights on the takeover of the Venezuelan Embassy in DC by #HandsOffVenezuela activists, and clashes with the pro-Guaido protesters outside the Embassy, preventing food and supplies delivery

The long and bloody history of American intervention in Central and South America is well documented but buried by mainstream US media.

A deeper incursion into Venezuelan life and efforts to unseat President Maduro by the American President will no doubt remind the nations of Peru, Colombia, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama of the damages past US interventions have caused and the decades of suffering experienced by their people.

At a time when international cooperation should be aimed at crime-prevention, addressing corruption and gang violence, and moderating the conditions that are inspiring refugee flight from those nations, a US action against Venezuela is ill-timed and could draw the US into a protracted and expensive campaign that dilutes the military's ability to respond to the more sensitive and threatening drama unfolding on the Korean Peninsula.

So what is behind the drumbeat for US intervention in Venezuela? Could it be oil?

Venezuela's rich oil supply has remained a public utility, with profits going to fund people-centered services and a social safety net for citizens in Venezuela. American gasoline and oil companies have long coveted the profits they could skim from a privatized Venezuelan oil industry, overseen by hand-selected US puppets running Venezuelan oil.

What is the motivation of President Maduro in permitting American peace activists to occupy the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington DC?

And who is organizing the pro-Guaido protesters outside the Embassy, some of whom have been US citizens for years, traveling from all over the US to loudly demand US intervention?
