The ReMarks

February 11, 2026

Good morning Saint Markers. It's been a while since you've opened this newsletter to a warm greeting. We tried to let it go, but the ReMarks just don't feel right without it, so we're bringing it back, and this time it's here to stay!

Here's what we've got for this week.

Sermon Scripture:

Ephesians 2:1-10

You were dead through the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world,[a] following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient.[b] 3 All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, doing the will of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else, 4 but God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ[c]—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places[d] in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— 9 not the result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we may walk in them.

Church News

Have you seen the new Black History Month Resources section of the website?

Not only does this section have a list of culturally relevant books

(and links to purchase said books) but it also has videos of historic speeches, all the Black History Month devotionals that have been sent out this month, and curated Spotify playlist featuring black icons from across the decades! If you haven't already, check it out now!

Are you a skilled writer and a spiritual leader?

wire-bound-pad.jpg

If you answered yes to both of those questions, we'd like you to consider writing reflections and prayers for the upcoming Lent devotional series! While the clergy are capable of writing them all, we fell it's important that voices from our church family also guide us in reflection and prayer. This is not about writing something perfect. It's about offering a faithful reflection that will help our church pray and contemplate together during Lent. This daily devotional starts on February 18th, and it follows our Jonah sermon series on forgiveness. If you'd like more information, or are interested in sign up, email office@stmarkumc.org to get started!

Communion & Council

We will be partaking in Holy Communion and recognizing the new church council chairs and officers this coming Sunday. The act of holy communion is a sacred one, and so are the roles that make up the church council. Join us in communion and celebration.

Closed for Presidents Day

The church office will be closed on February 16th in observation of Presidents Day. What started in 1879 as an honoring of George Washington's birthday, has changed to a means of creating more

three-day weekends in the hopes of improving administrative efficiency.

Because the holiday falls between the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (Feb. 12) and George Washington (Feb. 22), it has become commonly referred to as Presidents Day.

1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture

Saint Mark UMC is partnering with Free Mom Hugs to host a community screening and conversation around the documentary

1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture.

This award-winning film explores how a single word—first introduced into the Bible in 1946—helped reshape Christian theology, church culture, and lived experience for generations. Through historical research, personal stories, and faithful inquiry, the film invites viewers to reflect deeply on Scripture, translation, and love.

The screening is free and will take place immediately after the 11:00 AM service. There will also be food and discussion following the screening. Email office@stmarkumc.org to RSVP for this exclusive screening.

Special Announcement

It’s The 11th Day Of Black History Month and as we countdown to Morehouse Founders Day this Saturday , we want to take a moment to recognize one of the most influential Morehouse men in history — Howard Thurman.

A proud graduate of Morehouse College class of 1923 , Thurman used his education and purpose to become one of the greatest spiritual leaders and thinkers of the Civil Rights Era .While at Morehouse, he developed the Foundation Of Leadership, Faith, and Social Justice that would later shape his lifelong mission . Howard Thurman went on to write the groundbreaking book Jesus and The Disinherited , a powerful work that inspired Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and helped provide the spiritual blueprint for the Civil Rights Movement .He also made history by becoming one of the first black leaders to co-found an interracial church in America, breaking barriers in a time of deep segregation and inequality. Thurman’s legacy proves that Morehouse has always produced men who don’t just make history; they transform the world.

As we celebrate Black History Month and approach Founders Day, we honor Howard Thurman for his voice, his vision, and his impact.
