DID YOU KNOW that nicotinamide, also known as niacinamide, a non-flush form of niacin, has been populating numerous research journals recently?

Oral nicotinamide was cost-effective for reducing keratinocyte carcinoma (KC) risk in US veterans with a history of the disease, according to findings in JAMA Dermatology. The authors “support strong consideration of nicotinamide for KC prevention in high-risk populations like veterans, particularly given its safety and tolerability."

Nicotinamide supplementation was associated with a decreased risk for melanoma among patients with a history of other skin cancers, according to a study presented at the American Academy of Dermatology 2026 Annual Meeting.

Researchers publishing in Metabolism: Clinical and Experimental found that niacinamide helped those with metabolic-associated fatty liver disease. By uncoupling negative expression of a key gene, niacinamide helped restore normal fat-processing pathways in the liver and improved overall lipid balance.

Steve: Why does getting older go hand in hand with so many chronic illnesses? A new study in Aging offers a fresh way to think about it, proposing that age-related diseases may unfold in two connected stages across a lifetime.

In the first stage, earlier in life, the body accumulates various forms of hidden damage - from infections, injuries, or genetic mutations. We're usually good at repairing or "containing" this damage, but not all of it gets fully cleared; some lingers quietly in the background. The second stage arrives later in life, when the body's normal genetic activity begins shifting in ways that are no longer helpful, weakening our ability to keep that older, contained damage in check. What was once managed can then slowly surface as disease.

This two-stage idea helps explain a familiar pattern: many illnesses show up mainly in older age even though their roots trace back decades. Shingles is a clear example - the chickenpox virus can sit dormant for years, then reactivate when the aging immune system loses its grip. In a similar way, a joint injury in youth may set the stage for osteoarthritis once tissues become less resilient with age, and an inherited gene variant may stay silent for decades before raising the risk of conditions like cancer or fibrosis. In each case, it's the combination of early damage and later-life decline - not a single cause - that tips things toward illness.

Framing aging as a layered, multi-stage process points to two windows of opportunity: limiting the damage we accumulate earlier in life, and eventually learning to counter the harmful biological shifts that come later. This reinforces something practical - the healthy choices we make in our younger and middle years aren't just about feeling good now. They are quietly shaping how well we age for decades to come.
