A Tribute to

Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau from

Coach Rex

Personally, I never had the pleasure to meet Johnny Gaudreau. However, via the Calgary Flames media relations office I had a couple purchased Gaudreau jerseys autographed by Johnny himself. It was greatly appreciated. Johnny was always very generous with his time to support fundraising /charitable causes.

I arranged this signing for our Tucker Hockey 2015 & 2016 Skills Development Camps in Springdale, Newfoundland. The jersey helped raise funds for the local minor hockey association.

From a professional coach skills development perspective, I had always admired Johnny’s world class skills. His skating (especially his quickness & strong edges), his playmaking abilities & his offensive creativity / flare. Such an exciting player to watch!

He was an inspiring role model on & off the ice for youth hockey players everywhere. Johnny was so incredibly passionate about hockey. Being called “Johnny Hockey.”

His shocking death along with his younger brother Matthew is such an unimaginable tragedy.

Heart felt condolences are extended to the Gaudreau family, many friends and countless hockey admirers during this incredibly difficult time.

God speed Johnny & brother Matthew RIP.

Summer Re-cap

A heartfelt thank you to all the players who attended and supported our camps this summer during our 6 week hockey marathon!

For all our programs, we want to ensure that every player who participates has a positive experience.

We endeavour to;

· Instill the love of the game,

· Teach the fundamentals of skating and hockey skills

· Showcase advanced hockey skills to elite players

· In a high energy, positive and safe environment

Based on our proven “deliberate practice” coaching methodology and teaching methods we know you have improved your skills after experiencing Tucker Hockey!

The way we are different is;

1. We explain,

2. We demo,

3. Players do the drill,

4. We correct where needed and reinforce good skills

5. Then repeat, repeat……

We are committed to making the Tucker Hockey experience

an enjoyable and ongoing one for you!

Adult Award Recipient

Mayuko Kaneda

Mayuko started skating and hockey on Lake Louise with a pair of used skates and an old wooden hockey stick that a friend gave to her. She felt that the freedom to move so quickly on the ice and chasing the puck was wonderful. All this while surrounded by nature’s beauty. An unbelievable experience.

Years later, when Mayuko got more involved in organized hockey, she decided to sign up for a Tucker Hockey program. She notes that she learned so much and felt that the lessons were always fun and challenging. Just what she was looking for!

Congratulations on receiving the Bradley Mersereau Memorial Award Mayuko! Over the years we have seen you improve your skating and hockey skills immensely. You are very keen to learn, a very hardworking and coachable player!

Coach Rex's Corner

Consistent vs. Reactive Development

We are what we

repeatedly do –

excellence then –

is not an act –

but a habit.

~ Aristotle

Too often in hockey, players get cut from a desired team and do not reach their goals. Unfortunately, many players and parents realize too late that extra development was certainly needed to reach and play at this higher level of the game.

Over the years, we have received many phone calls and emails from parents inquiring about extra skill development; mostly to improve their son’s or daughters skating ability after not making a certain team.

This is a reactive development approach.

Coach Rex believes that players have to do the reps. Repetition is king! There are no shortcuts to “sweat equity” for success. The 10,000 hour rule is a benchmark to master skills and become expertly skilled in any chosen field of endeavour. Hockey players must put in the extra hours; love to train, want to get better and put in their extra time. It must feel like a joy not boring work!

Players must be dedicated to the process not just hoping to get to their desired destination. Otherwise, they will often end up being extremely disappointed.

Ben Moriarity

Ben started playing hockey when he was 5 years old. He couldn't skate for his first evaluation, so his Dad signed him up for skating lessons with Rex Tucker. Ben especially loved the "jail game"! He now plays at the U15 level with the Glenlake Hawks.

For Ben, hockey has allowed him to be more active and play the game that he loves. His dad and sister play as well and Ben really like going to the ODR and spending time with them. Ben also really likes going on tournaments and having fun with his hockey team.

The Moriarity’s have been loyal participants in Tucker Hockey Programs. It all started with Ben's Dad, Len who participated more than 15 years ago in our early morning Adult Fundamentals Recreational Program. Tucker Hockey wishes both Ben and his sister good luck this season!

Award Recipient:

Faith Greenough

Coach Rex selected Faith Greenough as the 2023 Ern Rideout Memorial Award – On Ice Instructor Apprenticeship Recipient.

Congratulations Faith!

Growing up Faith played elite level hockey as a left-handed, centreman/winger and was able to lead some of her teams.

Faith is currently a nursing student hoping to pursue a specialty in the Emergency Department. She has two younger brothers who are twins, and a St. Bernard/Poodle dog named Maggie!

For Faith, the most enjoyable part of coaching is the contagious smiles and being able to see the growth each player has made overtime. It makes her feel such pride when players work hard at something, and it begins to show. My goal is to positively influence, guide and teach players within the community, like young girls who remind me of my younger self, how to be the best they can be.

Faith has been a great addition to the Tucker Hockey Team over the last 2 years. Your outgoing personality generates great vibes within the Tucker Hockey Team. Your smile, enthusiasm and passion for the game at the rink truly inspires our youth participants of all ages. We have valued your on-ice contributions within our 3 on 3 program and various skills development programs.

Customer Testimonials

Adult Group

Program Testimonial

"I absolutely LOVED the adult programs with Tucker (Fundamentals & Advanced Technical). I learned SO MUCH and had a huge appreciation for the learning environment. I have never played organized hockey, but saw it as a unique challenge to learn a completely new skill as an adult. I can’t thank you enough for helping develop my on-ice skills, but I am also very grateful for the honest feedback and confidence that comes from the repetitions and learning.

I will definitely be back in another program!

~ Miki K. – Fall 2023

Minor Group

Program Testimonial

““It was my first experience with power skating so I didn’t know what to expect nor can I comment on the curriculum. What I can say though, is that my son’s skating and hockey skills are noticeable better and more fine tuned now than they were before, therefore, the goal was accomplished.”

~ Tonia B, Mother of Bennett – Winter 2018
