Message from the President of ACVA
Equinox September 2021
Dear ACVA alumni, friends, and students.
Hope this edition of The Comet finds you and your families doing well in these strange times. All is going very well at the college – we have a recent record number of really focused students. ACVA faculty are bringing their usual best to the courses. Gizem Heukelom has recently joined the ACVA faculty – we are pleased to welcome her as an instructor. We have some interesting plans for the near future – the curriculum is being developed and polished. Our entire team works like a well-oiled machine, in order to serve our students. It feels like ACVA is truly serving its dharma as an institution of high education, training the next generation of Jyotish. Thanks to each of you instructors, leadership team, I.T. team, and staff for your contributions to ACVA this past quarter. ACVA is doing its part well to ensure that the professional practice of Jyotish is becoming recognized as a viable career option for our graduates.

STAR GUIDANCE Fall Season 2021
by Lynn Bootes
Registrar and Instructor, ACVA
At ACVA, our Seva (service) is to train a new generation of Vedic astrologers. I have seen Jyotish newsletters with some pretty dire predictions about conflict for this season. While I certainly offer my prayers for the welfare of the world, I try to take my lessons from the Bhagavad Gita and focus on the task at hand. I take hope that at this time there are so many around the world who are doing the same in big and small ways, as Krishna advised Arjuna. I am old enough to remember other decades and seasons of crisis and worry, when it
seemed as though the worst would happen – and often enough when we look back conscious individuals around the world responded in amazing ways. I try to remember that in the end being “right” about some issue may be less important than a big picture I cannot even grasp. As the Sage Parasara reminds in chapter one of the Brihat Horasara, as humans we at best see only one portion of a toe of one foot of Ganesh.

MEET THE GRAHAS – MERCURY
COMET FALL EQUINOX EDITION
September 23, 2021
by Lynn Bootes
This Fall Equinox of 2021 the focus is on Mercury, that elusive planet which is never more that 28 degrees of longitude away from the Sun. Mercury is the sign ruler of Gemini and of Virgo, the Zodiac signs that the Sun visits at the Summer Solstice and now at the Fall Equinox. Of the visible grahas or planets, it is the one most difficult to spot with the naked eye. And its role in astrology and the meanings attached to Mercury are the most complex and confusing.
