The Workforce Development Board, Herkimer, Madison & Oneida Counties, Inc., Seeks Oneida County Employers to Provide Worksites for their Youth Employment Program
Utica, NY – The Workforce Development Board’s (WDB) Youth Employment Program (YEP) is an important platform that aims to reduce community gun violence and youth criminal justice involvement by providing year-round employment opportunities to at-risk youth, ages 14-20, from low-income households. Program participants will be recruited, hired, and paid through the Workforce Development Board, Herkimer, Madison & Oneida Counties, Inc.
The WDB is seeking partnerships with Oneida County employers who can provide jobs to YEP participants. Youth will work after school and on weekends and can work a flexible schedule depending on their availability and the work site.
The program also provides education and career exploration and is further intended to support youth at risk of gun violence as part of a statewide gun-violence reduction intervention model.
YEP will connect eligible Oneida County youth, ages 14-20, with entry-level jobs in a variety of industries, including government agencies, hospitals, camps, non-profits, small businesses, museums, retail organizations, and others.
At the conclusion of the program, the employer will have the option to hire the youth, the youth may secure their own employment, or staff will assist with job search or career exploration activities.
The program runs from September 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025.
Oneida County businesses need only supply the worksite and the WDB will do the rest. Youth can work up to 200 hours between September and June. The worksite request form is located on our website here: https://www.working-solutions.org/training-grant-programs/youth-employment-program-yep
For more information about this program, please contact: Zuleyka Febo, YEP Coordinator zfebo@working-solutions.org or 315-207-6951 ext. 144

Out-of-School Youth Program Success!
"Jess came to us in May, 2024, after finding himself unemployed through no fault of his own. Through working with the Youth Employment Specialist at Herkimer Working Solutions, Jess learned that his interests and previous background indicated he would do well in a position working with his hands in a physically demanding environment. He completed the Welding Fast Track program through MVCC, then transitioned into a paid work experience with a local company. During his time there, he was able to network with other professionals and start building his work experience. Now Jess is employed full time! Congratulations, Jess and keep up the good work!"
--Herkimer Working Solutions Manager Nicole Wilson
The *Herkimer Working Solutions Out-of-School Youth Program assists individuals aged 18-24 who are no longer attending school and who have a barrier to employment. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about the program, please reach out to the Youth Employment Specialist, Makayla, at 315-867-1400 or mmiller@herkimercountyny.gov

WDB Pathway Home 2 Grant Program Success!
"The Pathway Home 2 grant team completed its second OSHA 30 training at the Oneida Correctional Facility with a total of 15 Justice-Involved individuals. The class was a success. as always. but this class was exceptional. The participants were engaged, and all had experience in Mason, Carpentry, Tower climbing, Construction, CDL, Mechanic, and more. We were stopped in the hallway by several Correction Officers who commended us with one officer remarking that she has been teaching at the facility for more than 12 years and has never seen anything like these individuals: up and ready for class with a perfect attendance for all. Hearing that from the Officer makes what we are doing worthwhile."
Congratulations, participants!
--Loretta M. Young, WDB Pathway Home 2 grant Lead-In-Facility Counselor

NYS Workforce Survey Results
The New York State Workforce Survey for 2024 has been released. NYS Department of Labor received more than 30,000 responses to the survey from job seekers across the state. Some key takeaways from the survey include:
• A growing need for training and upskilling
• Lack of professional networks, experience, and credentials limit growth
• Artificial Intelligence is seen as both a threat to certain careers and a tool more people would like to be trained in
Some incentives that respondents cited as being most important to them are paid time off, ability to work remotely full-time, and high pay/higher starting pay. Meanwhile, age discrimination, lack of a professional network, and lack of the right degree, certificate, or credential were cited as the greatest barriers to employment.
These results will help to shape future policies to ensure that today's workforce has the tools, training, and experience to get the job they want and earn a wage they deserve.
