Director's Dispatch

Happy February, everyone!

I’ve spent January learning all about the Bixby and Vermont winter. While both have been interesting, I have to say that learning about this amazing library is much more in my wheelhouse than driving in the snow--but I’m learning.

It seems that everywhere I go, people not only know the Bixby, but love the Bixby. So many folks have told me about their experiences here and how much the Bixby means to them. I am so grateful to be part of this beloved community resource.

There are so many exciting things going on at the Bixby, from children’s programming to book groups and author readings. Check out our website for our full calendar of programming for all ages! A highlight from February’s programming is the “Cook the Book: Splendid Soups” program. Stop by to choose a soup recipe from Splendid Soups by James Peterson and bring it to share on Saturday, February 21st, from 12-1 PM. What a lovely way to warm up during this cold month!

We’re excited to host the 8th Annual LEGO Contest in partnership with Vergennes Parks and Recreation on Saturday, March 6th, from 10 AM-1 PM. All ages are invited to register their creations here through Saturday, February 14th. LEGO prizes will be awarded to the top build in each age group. I’m honored to judge the competition this year with several other community members, and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s creative LEGO builds!

Last but certainly not least, save the date for the Annual Bixby Gala, to be held on Friday, May 15th--I hear it’s the event of the season! We are busy planning now and will announce a theme soon, so stay tuned.

I want to thank everyone who has welcomed me so far. If you are at the Bixby, please stick your head into my office and introduce yourself. I can’t wait to meet more of you.

Have a wonderful February! See you at the Bixby.

Valentines for Seniors

Through Friday, February 13, all ages are invited to stop by the Community Room to make a Valentine’s card for local seniors! Use stamps, markers, stickers, and your creativity to design a one-of-a-kind Valentine that will be delivered to Addison Housing Works in time for Valentine’s Day.

New Exhibit: Revolutionary Moments

Come experience our new exhibit, Revolutionary Moments, now on display in the Kerr Room during the library's open hours. Honoring the 250th anniversary of the War for Independence and the founding of the United States, this exhibit highlights the revolutionary people, ideas, and actions that shaped life in Addison, Ferrisburgh, Panton, Vergennes, and Waltham during this transformative era. Thank you to History Team Volunteer Nancy Remsen and Historical Collections Associate Kelly Bartlett for curating this inspiring exhibit!

The Storm by Rachel Hawkins

It was the setting--the Rosalie Inn, a century-old, family-run hotel in St. Medard’s Bay, Alabama, with a storm on the way--that stood out in this book. During a previous storm, Landon Fitzroy is murdered. Lo, his girlfriend and the woman accused of the crime, returns to St. Medard’s with a writer to tell her story. What exactly happened during that storm years ago, and what will happen now, with another storm approaching?

The Ferryman and His Wife by Frode Grytten

When Nils Vik wakes on November 18th, he knows it is the day he will die. Nils lived a simple life as a rural ferryman, delivering folks from all walks of life across the Norwegian fjord to both city and countryside. On this final day, he makes one last crossing, revisiting memories of the passengers and moments that shaped his life. As the journey unfolds, Nils comes to see that what he believed was an ordinary existence was, in fact, rich with meaning and lasting impact. Quiet, contemplative, and lightly touched with magic, this novel is a meditation on memory, connection, and the lives we influence without realizing it.

Crouton by Kristine A. Lombardi

What if cats felt the same way about us as we do about them? Perfect for anyone considering bringing a cat into their family, Crouton is a heartwarming and cheeky take on adoption from the point of view of a shelter cat who is excited to finally pick her person. Once Crouton gets home, she looks after her new owner, making sure she is fed, clean, going to school, and doing her homework. Lombardi’s grayscale illustrations, with pops of pink, will keep readers charmed and engaged. Crouton is so lovable with her pink bow that it will immediately make you want to get your own kitten!
