Our 2025 Summer Conference!
If there's one true thing that can be said of our work it's that we are committed to innovation and staying relevant. We have evolved in many ways over the years, from an exclusive focus on the afterlife and after-death communication to academic research on multi-cultural death and grief practices and scholarship on the impact of religiosity on loss, trauma and bereavement. Along the way, we gained many new subscribers with new interests, and we also lost a few. Such is the nature of evolution and innovation.
In view of today's unprecedented and surreal political climate, we are now heeding a new call... the need to speak out in defense of basic human values that include ethics, freedom of thought and speech, and the basic human rights that we all take for granted.
Without abandoning our spiritual roots, we are highlighting these values in our 2025 conference, and we hope you will join us.
You'll find details below, or you can visit the conference web page HERE.

END-OF-LIFE, AFTERLIFE
AND BEREAVEMENT
| | |
Jewish Views of the Afterlife
| | "Yes, Judaism believes in life after death. The Bible talks about Sheol, where the dead go to reside — a place of darkness, where nothing much really happens. But there was little else about the next world — probably because the Egyptians believed in it, and biblical Judaism is, in one sense, a rejection of ancient Egypt." READ MORE... | | |
Liberating Yoga From Appropriation
| | "If you ask 10 people in North America what yoga looks like, says writer, yoga teacher and activist Harpinder Kaur Mann, nine might say “a thin woman in leggings holding a pose.” While yogis wearing Lululemon outfits and teaching CorePower Yoga sweat sessions on Instagram may seem like key-holders to yoga culture for the average Westerner, too often, this sanitization of yoga from anything decidedly “ethnic” fundamentally misses the purpose of the practice..." A Playful Approach to Planning for Death
| | "Americans are starting to talk about death in new ways. The new FX on Hulu show 'Dying for Sex,' starring Michelle Williams, is about dying of cancer, and has become a hit. The growing death-tech industry hopes to streamline end-of-life planning. Death Over Dinner is a project that encourages people to discuss death at their next dinner party. And in February, The New York Times’ Tech Tip focused on digital estate planning." Two were killed because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time — they weren’t protesting. And the Kent State students were not the only students to be killed on an American college campus in May 1970. Eleven days later at Jackson State College (now University) in Jackson, Mississippi, police confronted a group of Black students protesting. They opened fire and killed two: Phillip Lafayette Gibbs, 21, a junior, and James Earl Green, 17, a high school senior. Twelve others were wounded." READ MORE... | | |
"Visitors have come in their millions to the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s biggest museum, education and research complex, in Washington for the past 178 years... until Donald Trump arrived with his cultural wrecking ball.
The US president, who has sought to root out “wokeness” since returning to power in January, accused the Smithsonian of trying to rewrite history on issues of race and gender. In an executive order entitled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History”, he directed the removal of “improper, divisive or anti-American ideology” from its storied museums." READ MORE...
| | This is What Child Grooming and Indoctrination
Actually Looks Like | This was posted on Facebook recently by someone who described this child as "someone who really knows his religion." But this child has no idea what he's talking about; he hasn't yet developed critical thinking skills, and couldn't possibly answer any question about doctrine or theology. He is simply parroting and performing what the adults around him have trained him to do. READ MORE... | | | |
Government Wants Us to
Turn in Co-Workers for
"Anti-Christian Bias"
| "Secretary of Veterans' Affairs, Doug Collins is now implementing a controversial policy of encouraging agency employees to surveil their coworkers for any perceived biases against Christianity as part of an executive order signed by President Trump. But activists have condemned the move as an effort by the administration to impose Christian nationalism. READ MORE... | | | |
WORKSHOPS, CLASSES
AND PROFESSIONAL TRAINING
| | Grief Therapy Training Retreat
in Washington State | | |
If there's a chance you can get to the Pacific Northwest this summer, you won't want to miss this opportunity to study with the great Dr. Robert Neimeyer and a stellar list of renowned teachers in a multi-day retreat on beautiful Bainbridge Island near Seattle. The content addresses a wide range of in-depth topics in grief research and therapy approaches (a detailed outline of the program and be found here).
Editor's note: I took this training myself two years ago, and my certification in Family-Focused Grief Therapy has been incredibly valuable for me. I highly recommend this program!

It is sometimes said in spiritual communities that our work exists in a realm beyond material concerns, and that politics and social activism is something we should not address in our public or professional roles. Is it "unspiritual" to take a public stand on political issues, or is it more important than ever in today's America?
Inspired by Bishop Marianne Budde when she spoke truth to Donald Trump from the pulpit during the inauguration, we pose thIs question... as public facing care providers and spiritual leaders, do we have a moral and ethical obligation to stand for social justice? Or are we expected to keep spiritual practice, professional outreach and political activism in separate silos?
