Dear Supporter and Member:
I hope you all are enjoying the last full month of summer. For most of us, August is when we try to squeeze in the last bits of sun even though summer doesn’t end until late September. August is also a time that our youth, educators, and parents are getting ready to come back to school. Summer camps are ending, and many organizations and the school district are planning for back-to-school events this month.
For some of the high school students in Pontiac, this summer has included internships at local businesses. These summer opportunities provide them a way to build confidence, gain valuable skills, and (let’s face it) a little cash in their pocket. GM Pontiac Engineering Center is proud to continue to offer its Pontiac Schools Pre-Engineering Summer internship to the brightest and best in Pontiac. Each year the high school juniors have an opportunity to apply for this 10-week internship to learn if a career in STEM is in their future. We have several students working for us this summer that heard about this opportunity and started to talk themselves out of it (saying to themselves things like ‘I’m not in FIRST Robotics’; ‘They don’t want me'; ‘I can’t work there’). Accent Pontiac
Creating Social Change Through Music
Accent Pontiac is an El Sistema-inspired social change through music education program in Pontiac, Michigan with a mission to strengthen Pontiac’s youth and community through equitable access to intensive and consistent music making. A partner of the Pontiac School District, Accent Pontiac launched in September 2016 and has grown to serve over 250 students. Accent Pontiac programming is offered 4 days per week and consists of ensembles and sectionals on brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments, chamber music, music theory/history, homework help, a hot meal, and transportation, all free of charge to participating students.
In addition, Accent Pontiac hosts immersive experiences for Pontiac students, including student performance opportunities, guest artist events, and field trips.
Accent Pontiac has some exciting events coming up
Join us for AP After Hours, a benefit concert for Accent Pontiac featuring Consuming Arts and Pancho Villa Skull, on September 9th at the Alley Cat Cafe in downtown Pontiac. You can register at apafterhours.org; suggested donation is $5.
The 5th Annual Green Bucket Run is on November 5th at Kirk in the Hills in Bloomfield Hills. The race starts at 9 am and kicks off with a kids race and a snack drive. Register to run or sponsor the event at accentpontiac.org/greenbucketrun.

Can I open with my personal feeling as a Pastor, Community Person, and Friend to so many Educators, Residents, Young Adults, Business Leaders, Political Leaders, and those who transit in this great city called PONTIAC??? I am very proud of our city the people who live, work, and play here. Pontiac has and is filled with a lot of love, tenacity, opportunities and a never say die attitude. Pontiac Always Bounces Back!!!!
I see this Energy in our Young Parents, Youth, Young Kids, I see this in the Young and Old, the Pop-Up Vendors, and Entrepreneurs. I see it in the new and old businesses in our city. I see it in our Political Leaders, our Churches, and Pastors. We talk, We move, and We ACT.
Over my 33 Years here in the “YaK”, I have seen, heard and witnessed many things. Life affords that to all of us. Whatever the situation or circumstances we encounter Pontiac always Bounces back…. So let me offer this Prediction… Read More
