October 2026

Hello friends,

This month we are continuing with "tips" of the prior two months - items that "should not" be placed in checked bags that will be handled by airline personnel.

Most travelers are more familiar with prohibitions placed on items unable to be carried in carry-on luggage; and generally are unaware that a number of items contained in checked luggage handled by the airlines also can cause challenges and delays.

Actual examples of bizarre and prohibited items found in checked luggage by TSA recently include a cat, a four-foot boa constrictor, and a smoke grenade hidden in a peanut butter jar.

Remember, your "Tips" for inclusion in future issues on all matters are welcomed.

Travel Tip #1

LOADED GUNS

TSA allows unloaded guns in checked luggage as long as you declare them, and they are inside hard-sided containers. Be sure to know specific airline rules before transporting firearms of any type.

Travel Tip #2

PAINT

TSA does not like to find paint in your checked luggage because it's considered hazardous. Non-flammable artists paints are often allowed, however, any paint will raise red flags and may well be confiscated.

Travel Tip #3

GLUE

Once again TSA is concerned with flammable liquids with glue being one of the worst offenders. If for some reason you must carry glue be able to prove it is not flammable..

Travel Tip #4

MARIJUANA

Cannabis is currently legal in 38 states. TSA officers are required to report any potentially illegal item to law enforcement, so even if you're traveling between two legal states, marijuana may still be confiscated and send out unnecessary red flags.

Travel Tip #5

EXPENSIVE JEWELRY & OTHER HIGH VALUE ITEMS

Although legal, why risk loss?

Travel Tip #6

FILM CAMERAS

Not nearly as common as they used to be if you want to bring a film camera on your trip make sure you keep it in your carry-on luggage. Checked baggage scanners are much more powerful and will more than likely ruin your film.
