For years, restaurant workers and food entrepreneurs have flocked to Cape Cod for a summer job, a side hustle, or a professional career opportunity in the culinary arts. The region’s bustling tourism economy and strong seasonal homeowner market present both challenges and opportunities for accommodation and food service businesses, which make up the Cape’s largest industry and account for 16.4% of the overall regional economy. Accommodation and food service businesses also contribute to Cape Cod’s ranking as the second biggest generator of state and local tax receipts, next to Boston. The industry’s substantial regional footprint stands in contrast to the statewide economy, where accommodation and food services does not even rank in the top ten industries by GDP.

Given the significance of the accommodations and food services industry for Cape Cod’s regional economy, the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce has closely followed discussion around Ballot Question 5, a referendum that will be considered by Massachusetts voters this fall.

Amanda Catania, our Director of Tourism Sales, has been so busy this fall trade show season its had us asking (and singing): Where in the world is Amanda Catania? She began her journey at IMEX America in Las Vegas, where she represented Cape Cod alongside colleagues Areeya Chaisit from Ocean Edge Resort and Golf Club and Jessica Gosian from Seacrest Beach Resort at the Meet Boston booth. Additionally, Gianni Saltalamachhia from the newly renovated Margaritaville Cape Cod was in attendance, engaging visitors at the Margaritaville Resorts booth.

Next, Amanda traveled to Niagara Falls for Northstar Meetings Group’s Destination East, where she was fortunate to have over 20 appointments with meeting and event planners during her two days there. With a packed schedule, including a ride on the Maid of the Mist, the event allowed Amanda to connect with many industry professionals eager to share insights and explore new opportunities.

Amanda’s last stop this October was in nearby Newport, Rhode Island for the Smart Meetings Luxury Experience at The Newport Harbor Island Resort. This event focuses on high-end meetings and events, bringing together planners, suppliers, and industry professionals to network and explore luxury offerings in the meetings and hospitality sectors. Amanda had 25 one-on-one appointments, participated in a downtown Newport scavenger hunt, and attended a Gatsby-inspired dinner at Rosecliff Mansion, all while networking with new industry colleagues. Stay tuned for where Amanda ends up next!

This month, we partnered with our Chamber friends for our networking events. On Wednesday, October 9th, our Good Evening Networking event with the Greater Hyannis Chamber was at the Karribean Lounge on Main Street in Hyannis.

Then, on Friday, October 25th, we held our Good Morning Networking at Cape Cod Coffee with our friends from the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce.

Our CEO, Paul Niedzwiecki, served as a moderator for a panel with Eric Shupin and Secretary Ed Augustus of the Executive Office of Housing & Livable Communities (EOHLC). Discussions included the Affordable Homes Act and how we can leverage its new policies and resources to create more attainable year-round housing across our region.

On October 24th, we attended the Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative's Annual Net Zero Conference in Hyannis. Net Zero featured panels with climate leaders on crucial topics like coastal resilience, electrifying transportation on Cape Cod, and practical actions for reducing emissions and enhancing community resilience. This year, we were excited to have our three interns from Barnstable High School attend and participate in the day.
