CWSP INCREASES CAREER TRAILS OFFERINGS FOR 2024-25

Last summer, Cristo Rey Jesuit launched the Cristo Rey Network's first Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program as an additional opportunity for Trailblazers to explore the healthcare industry. 23 students earned their CNA and were placed in nursing assistant roles for their CWSP placement. 8 of the 10 graduating seniors are now pursuing a four-year nursing degree. This summer, 20 additional juniors and seniors will be licensed as CNAs, giving them a head start on a medical career (pictured above).

Vice President of CWSP Everette Fernandes said, "CWSP's Career Trails program helps students connect dots between what they want to study and the careers they want to pursue. Licensing and certifications give them opportunities to make an even deeper connection in an area of interest and a potential career." In addition to expanding the CNA program, thanks to a partnership with the Boys & Girls Club, training and certification are being offered in the following areas:

  • Arts, Audio/Video Technology, and Communications
  • Bilingual Youth Entrepreneurial Program
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant
  • Certified Medical Administrative Assistant
  • Child Care Certification
  • Information Technology
  • Retail
  • Quickbooks Training (pictured right)

These additional certifications were identified to help students develop desired skills in careers from health science to education to business management. Fernandes said, “The Corporate Work Study program is designed to introduce students to local employers and career trails. Thanks to the mentorship of supervisors, CRJ students graduate from high school having already successfully entered the workplace, and they enter college more likely to know that the major that they’re pursuing aligns with their interests and passions because of their CWSP experiences. The more career trails and opportunities we can present, the better experience it is for our students and the more positive impact students will make in the workplace.”

PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE
A REFLECTION FROM ANDY STITH

Cristo Rey Network President Kelby Woodard (far left) met with members of the incoming class of 2028 and their families during a visit in April.

Financial management and accountability have been regular themes playing through the education news in Milwaukee these days. As the leader of Cristo Rey Jesuit, how we direct and account for our financial resources is something I think about quite a bit. I would argue that stewardship of our financial resources towards the objectives of our mission and the processes that hold us to account for doing this are as or more rigorous than almost any other high school in Milwaukee. This is because of the people involved in regularly assessing our use of financial resources and the variety of organizations working to ensure our “north star” remains our mission and the young people we educate.

In my time as President, I have learned that strong governance board leadership is essential to the process of appropriately allocating and accounting for resources. At Cristo Rey Jesuit, we are blessed on our governance board with education, faith, community, and business leaders at the pinnacles of their careers. Some of these leaders with deep career experience in financial management act as our finance committee. They scrutinize and approve our annual financial audits, performed by external auditors, for both our school and our Corporate Work Study Program. This group also analyzes our annual budget in light of our strategic plan. They help us manage our financial resources so that we are prepared to meet the needs of our mission in the future. Our senior leadership works closely with governance board members and views them as a valuable and trusted resource when financial questions or challenges arise. We are so blessed to have benefited from the expertise and experience of strong business and community leaders from the inception of our school.

In addition to these people are the organizations who regularly audit or evaluate us in all areas of mission fidelity, including that we have a sound financial structure and that we are attributing our resources in service of our mission. The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) performs three audits per year verifying our enrollment, financial practices, and that we spent the funds we received from the school choice program according to state laws. These are in addition to the Corporate Work Study Program and school audits that are performed by our external auditors. The Archdiocese requests personnel related information annually. Also, similar to some other high schools, we are accredited through the state of Wisconsin by Cognia. This accreditation visit occurs every three years and is a comprehensive multi-day review of our school according to state academic standards. These aforementioned groups are just a baseline of accountability for us, however.

What is truly unique about our school is that we also report to the Jesuit Schools Network, the Cristo Rey Network, and Midwest Province Jesuits annually. These networks request personnel and financial data every year. The Cristo Rey Network asks us to report our progress on meeting the Mission Effectiveness Standards of the Cristo Rey Network and sends a team of Cristo Rey leaders in person to evaluate Cristo Rey Jesuit Milwaukee every five years. (This review is next school year for us!) The Midwest Province Jesuits evaluate us against the Standards and Benchmarks of Jesuit Education. They send a group of Jesuit school leaders to Cristo Rey Jesuit Milwaukee every six years to ensure we are meeting the expectations of a Jesuit school. Both of these reviews are multi-day and probe every aspect of our operational and financial reality. They provide us important feedback both in how we are living up to our mission and what areas of growth these organizations expect us to address in order to better serve our students. These organizations and processes are so valuable to us as they act as continued barometers for our growth as we seek to live out our Catholic, Jesuit mission.

I’ll admit that all of the accountability to these different organizations can feel overwhelming to me, especially when we layer on our responsiveness to various institutional stakeholders. However, they all help us to continue to be a better school. They ensure we are stretching every dollar for the good of our mission. They can push us to be our best programmatically for the students we serve. They can ask the tough questions and help us to think about our challenges differently. They walk with us, ensure our strong foundation, and continue to push us to aspire to more as stewards of our Catholic, Jesuit high school mission. While the various ways that we are accountable won’t make the education news in Milwaukee, I felt that it was a good time to share our perspective!

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

IMANOL RUIZ, '20 WINS BEST DOCUMENTARY AT CALIFORNIA FILM FESTIVAL

Imanol Ruiz, ' 20 (second from right) poses with other winners at the Mometu College Shorts Film Festival.

Last August, CRJ alum Imanol Ruiz, ‘20 was in the middle of production on his senior thesis at UWM. Ruiz was a film student, meaning he needed to produce a 15-minute short film on a subject of his choice. Ruiz chose to do a documentary titled “The Time You Were Given” about three retired Catholic priests who look back on the choices they’ve made in their lives and ask ‘was it all worth it?’

Ruiz said that the idea came as a result of reflecting what was happening in his own life.“I was about to graduate college and in many ways a version of me was ending and a new version of me was coming to life. I was also about to make a career decision that would guide the next phase of my life. Knowing those tropes are things I could connect to - endings and commitments - I came up with the idea of a documentary, which explored those same tropes: Retired Catholic priests who have committed most of their lives to something and are moving to the end of their natural lives.”

Ruiz said that his interest in a career in the arts started at CRJ. "My experiences in CRJ's theater program and classes really made me feel a connection to the arts. I felt it was something I could wrap my head around and something I felt called to do." Ruiz reached out to CRJ staff members to make connections with the three Catholic priests who would be the subjects of his documentary. Ruiz estimated that he spent a year on the project from the time he came up with the idea until he finished the final cut, which was screened at UWM. His film was then nominated for the Mometu College Shorts Film Festival in Los Angeles, and "The Time You Were Given" won the best documentary category. Ruiz attended the screening of his film at the film festival in July at The Harmony Gold Theater.

Ruiz said, “I was very fortunate to have competed and extremely grateful to have won in my category. This was a huge moment in my early career and it will serve as a very happy and proud moment in my early life. It taught me to think BIG! I am very proud to say that I will take this experience and immediately implement it as I prepare to launch my own media solutions company by the end of the year."
