READY, SET, FALL!

TACKLE BUSY WEEKNIGHTS, FUEL YOUR FAVORITE ATHLETES AND BUILD A WINNING TAILGATE WITH WHEAT.

The dog days of summer seemed to stretch on forever, but once the school bells started ringing, someone hit fast-forward.

Suddenly, calendars are packed with practices, games, school activities, tailgates and all the fall festivities that seem to arrive at once. Weeknights are busier, weekends fill up quickly and getting everyone fed can become one more thing on an already long to-do list.

This issue of Flourish is all about making the most of this busy season. We’re building a winning tailgate with wheat foods everyone can enjoy, looking at why carbohydrates are important fuel for the athletes in your family and sharing ideas to make weeknight meals a little quicker when there’s somewhere else you need to be.

Fall may move fast, but good food can still bring everyone together — whether it’s around the dinner table, in the stands or gathered around the tailgate before kickoff.

The best tailgates have a little something for everyone. Mix and match these wheat-filled favorites to create a game-day spread with plenty to pass, dip, grab and share.

PICK YOUR MAIN EVENT

Give an ordinary game-day hot dog an upgrade with homemade Hawaiian Hot Dog Buns. A touch of pineapple juice and brown sugar brings a little sweetness to every bite.

BUILD A BETTER DOG

BRING A SIDE

Beef, cheddar and mushrooms wrapped in golden bread dough make these handheld pies a game-day win. Serve them warm with marinara for dipping.

GRAB A WINNING BITE

ADD SOMETHING TO SCOOP AND DIP

  • Crackers — See Cheese Ball Tray with Whole Grain Crackers below.
  • Pita chips
  • Toasted bread
  • Tortilla wedges — Make them fresh with Tortillas.

Creamy, cheesy and ready in just 15 minutes, this easy Cheese Ball Tray with Whole Grain Crackers is made for sharing with a hungry game-day crowd.

SAVOR EVERY SCOOP

DON'T FORGET SOMETHING SWEET

Chocolate and peanut butter are always a winning combination. These fudgy brownies swirl creamy peanut butter into rich chocolate and add mini chocolate chips for an extra sweet game-day treat.

SCORE SOMETHING SWEET

BONUS POINTS

  • Soft pretzels — Get dipping with Soft Pretzel Bites.
  • Snack mix — Crunch into game day with Party Pretzels.
  • Cinnamon rolls for an early kickoff — See Grandma's Cinnamon Rolls below.

An early kickoff calls for something worth getting out of bed for. Grandma’s Cinnamon Rolls are soft, sweet and topped with cream cheese frosting — just right for starting game day.

RISE & ROLL

From kickoff to the final whistle, wheat is part of the game.

BEHIND THE CROP

While many crops are being harvested in the fall, Oklahoma wheat farmers are just getting started. Most of Oklahoma’s winter wheat is planted this time of year, but getting the crop off to a good start takes more than seed and a planter. It takes moisture. Rain helps seeds germinate and establish strong roots before the crop goes dormant during the coldest part of winter, then takes off again in the spring.

As farmers look to the skies and put another wheat crop in the ground, please pray for rain.
