NATIONAL HOMEMADE BREAD DAY
On November 17th, homes will fill with warm, comforting aromas reminding us to slow down and enjoy National Homemade Bread Day.
Yeast bread calls for us to slow down. We need to spend time with each other as we work the dough and let it rest and rise before baking. Quick breads allow a special treat to share and enjoy with coffee or tea. Other homemade breads, such as donuts, pretzels, muffins, and biscuits, add variety to our everyday meals. And making them with friends and family brings joy and an opportunity to exchange recipes.
Those who make homemade bread commit to using good ingredients and investing in the time. They make it not only because they love the flavor, but because they know the people they love to do also. Homemade bread enriches the flavors of our meals and the flavors of our conversations, too.
Bread is full of symbolism around the world, across cultures and religions. In our lives, bread is valuable. We consider our livelihood to be our daily bread. We are making it, breaking it, consuming it as part of our faith. Bread can be exciting if it's sliced or boring if it's white. There's a bonus bread, too. However, it seems a bit messy if it's buttered on both sides. Then again, when we roll in the dough, it's messy, too. Bake it, and it becomes heavy bread, but it means the same thing.

NATIONAL BUTTER DAY
Few ingredients make a meal richer and more flavorful than butter. On November 17th, National Butter Day gives this creamy ingredient, and those who make it, a pat on the back.
Butter has been used by humans for thousands of years. As recently as the first half of the last century, the butter churn was an essential tool in many kitchens. When butter was rationed during World War II, households struggled to get along without this delicious staple.
"With enough butter, anything is good." ~ Julia Child
Butter can be used in simple and complex ways - spread a pat of butter on warm toast for an instant hit of flavor and texture or use it to create the light, flaky layers in a croissant. It also enhances the mouthfeel of hot drinks, like coffee and cocktails, and it keeps meats tender while roasting. Butter is the crucial ingredient in mouthwatering sauces, rich cookies, creamy mashed potatoes, hearty casseroles, and so much more.
The average American eats 6.3 pounds, or about 25 sticks, of cow's butter every year. Around the world, butter can be found in cuisines of every culture, and each one uses it to enhance their recipes and enrich their lives.
Around the dinner table, the phrase "Please, pass the butter," connects us to those we break bread with and to the food we love to eat. National Butter Day invites you to celebrate your favorite dishes and baked goods with butter.

Directions and Parking
The Sunday Market is located in the parking lot of Tad Gormley Stadium at the corner of Marconi and Navarre. While the parking lot is closed off to house the market, there is plenty of parking along Marconi and surrounding streets. Please be diligent about following parking signs and only park in clearly marked spaces with perpendicular markings. DO NOT park in the bike lanes, as this makes our market space unsafe to bikers and pedestrians and threatens our ability to continue operating the market here. No parking allowed on the neutral ground. Please don't pull up into the market driveway for recycling pick ups or drop offs. Thank you for understanding!
RTA Bus Route 27: Louisiana passes right by market! Click here to view more details about route 27.

Six practice squad drivers will also compete. Over the course of the two-day P3 race event, teams will go head-to-head and wheel-to-wheel in Radical SR1 race cars, competing for team and driver championship points.
The P3 Championship regular season spans four race events and eight Rounds, featuring 24 rostered drivers and 6 practice squad drivers competing head-to-head in Radical SR1 race cars. Each event includes 9 practice sessions, a qualifying session to determine lane choice for the head-to-head team matchups, and 6 head-to-head races. Races are 18 minutes long, utilize rolling starts, and cannot finish under caution. Additionally, each event will feature an elimination race for practice squad drivers. Each car number represents the driver’s draft selection order, helping fans easily track their performance throughout the series.

acrimony Pronunciation: /ˈækrɪˌmoʊni/
Definition: intense bitterness or ill feeling, especially when it is long-standing
Origin: The word "acrimony" originated from the Latin word "acrimonia," which means sharpness or bitterness. It entered the English language in the 16th century.
Example: Despite once being close friends, their disagreement over politics led to acrimony and they stopped speaking to each other.
"Bitterness" is not the definition of "acrimony." While both words convey a similar sentiment, "acrimony" specifically refers to intense bitterness or ill feeling, often with a long-lasting quality. It describes a state of animosity or resentment between individuals or groups. Bitterness, on the other hand, is a more general term that encompasses a range of emotions associated with resentment, hostility, or dissatisfaction. While they share some similarities, "acrimony" carries a stronger connotation of deep-seated animosity and prolonged bitterness.

NATIONAL BAKLAVA DAY
On November 17th, National Baklava Day fills the kitchen with an aroma of a sweet and flaky pastry. Baklava's sweet layers of texture and flavor are created between sheets of filo pastry filled with chopped nuts and drizzled with syrup or honey.
Many believe Baklava to have originated with the Turkic people in Central Asian nations. However, many countries prepare the dessert in a variety of ways. The word “Baklava” first appeared in English in 1650.
If you've never tried baklava, try sampling the many varieties. Walnuts, pecans, pistachios, or almonds can be used. The filling can be composed of raisins, dates, prunes, and even figs. Most baklava recipes call for cinnamon, cardamom, or cloves - sometimes all three spices.
Preparing this dessert may be somewhat time-consuming. However, it is a treat worth the work and the wait.

Hoagy Carmichael sported the easy-going, everyman demeanor and philosophy of America’s heartland. Musician, composer, actor and writer Hoagy was one of the most successful entertainers of the 1930s and 40s. He recorded hundreds of songs, and several are most popular in the American songbook: Stardust, Heart and Soul, Georgia and The Nearness of You. Throw in In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening, Lazy Bones, Skylark, Ole Buttermilk Sky, Up the Lazy River and get set for a historically and musically entertaining evening.
Join Heidi, John, Paul, Rich, Alden, Dave, and Phil as we close out our Fall Songwriters Series with three nights of Hoagy’s music. Add the comedy of Chris Champagne under the stars of Monkey Hill and … “that old Rockin’ Chair won’t get ya.”

The Old Farmers Almanac
The Leonid Meteor Shower is headed our way! Look for roughly 10 meteors per minute to grace our night skies on November 17-18. Best time to spot 'em is predawn on the 18th, and you're going to get the best views looking towards the south.
The bright moonlight might make it hard to see the meteors this year, but follow these tips from astronomer Bob Berman, and you'll know everything you need to know to get the best glimpse.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!
Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!
Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.
No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,November 18
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Friday Night Wine School - Perfect Wines for A Grateful Gathering
Fri Nov 15, 2024 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM CST Swirl, 70119
Join us for our attendance-limited, signup-only Friday night tasting! Tastings are held on the back patio with a max of 10 people per time slot.
No matter what you call it, the 4th Thursday in November has always been one of our favorite holidays at Swirl because it is one single day where we stop everything we're doing and celebrate life and relationships with food, wine, family and great friends. There are no obligatory presents involved, just maybe the gift of something you've cooked, a bottle of nice wine for the host and your presence at the table. We consider it our job to make you look good and drink well on that special Thursday. So this year we are getting a headstart for those of you who like to prepare early!
Julia Child famously said that "a party without cake is just a meeting," and we believe a dinner party without a good bottle of wine is just another meal. While we love putting together a crowd-pleasing menu and surrounding ourselves with those we hold dear, a great bottle of wine is the icing on the cake and we know that sometimes making those choices can be overwhelming. So we hope you'll join Wesley from Vino Wholesale as we taste through some of our favorite food-friendly wines that would be just perfect for your gathering. There's sure to be a sparkling, whites, reds, maybe a rosé? We'll discuss food pairings so bring your questions and even your menus, we are here to help!
Speaking of food pairings...this year we are doing a holiday recipe challenge! Send us your favorite, tried and true recipe for your gathering. We'll pick our 5 favorite entries and pair wines with them to present at our Grateful Gatherings tasting on 11/15. We're looking for appetizers, mains, sides and desserts - vegan, vegetarian, meat, fish, poultry, whatever...Wesley and I will select the recipes and pair the wines. Send me an email, beth@swirlnola.com, with the subject "Holiday Recipe Challenge" to enter your recipe - complete recipes only please, with ingredients and instructions, we will share these the night of the event and send you our pairing recommendation if your recipe gets chosen.
-All ticket sales are final.
-We will hold our tastings outside on the patio from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM on Fridays weather permitting, if it rains we move inside to the back of the shop.
-Your $5 tasting fee is refunded when you purchase a bottle of wine from the tasting. Limit 1 refund per bottle per customer.
-Please arrive 5 minutes early for your time slot, as we may not be able to move you to another spot.
-No waiting in line for your taste of wine in a plastic cup and snippet of info. During your time slot, you will have the presenter's undivided attention as you learn about and taste the wines from Riedel glassware.
-When your tasting is over, you can browse and shop or enjoy a glass or bottle at our indoor and outdoor tables.

Narcan training sessions will include free Narcan for all participants, while Stop the Bleed training will cover essential skills for managing bleeding emergencies. For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
