Have you made an invention or discovery?

At UConn and UConn Health, research and the development of new inventions and technology occur daily. The University encourages this development and supports the commercialization of intellectual property created by faculty, students, and staff.



The University's Intellectual Property and Commercialization Policy outlines the rights and responsibilities of employees involved in the development of an invention.

Researchers at UConn and UConn Health who have created inventions or made discoveries must follow specific steps in order to protect their intellectual property, and commercialize or license their inventions and discoveries. If you have created an invention or made a discovery using funds from a federal grant, you must abide by the requirements outlined in the Bayh-Dole Act. The Bayh-Dole Act is a federal law that provides opportunities for universities to own, patent, and commercialize inventions developed under federally-funded research programs. Faculty and staff who are completing the invention disclosure process, or interested in learning more about the commercialization and licensing of intellectual property, are encouraged to contact Technology Commercialization Services and Sponsored Program Services:

TCS and SPS are departments within the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) that maintain oversight of the Intellectual Property and Commercialization Policy.
