Student Spotlight

Oliver

In November, we’re celebrating a major milestone for Oliver as he prepares to graduate from Sargent Center! He has made tremendous progress throughout his time at Sargent, especially in his verbal communication. Staff in his classroom once kept a one-page list of the words he would say, and today, he uses hundreds of words and phrases and is beginning to speak in full sentences with encouragement.

Oliver's growth extends far beyond communication. He has developed valuable independent living skills, including preparing his own lunch, completing his personal hygiene routine, and keeping his space clean and organized. He has also grown in self-advocacy, learning to recognize his sensory needs and use strategies that help him feel his best, such as jumping on his trampoline.

Playful, funny, and always known for being “Best Dressed,” Oliver brings a special personality to the Sargent community. As he gets ready for this exciting next chapter, we’re incredibly proud of all he has accomplished. He is a well-loved member of our community, and while he will be greatly missed by his friends and staff, we look forward to celebrating his many achievements and all the possibilities ahead!

Congratulations, Olly!

Staff Appreciation

Jessica Andrade

Teacher Assistant

Jessica has been a valued member of the Sargent community for over three years. She has worked in a variety of different classrooms and even stepped into a teaching role as a long-term substitute, demonstrating her flexibility, knowledge, and commitment to our students.

Jessica brings energy, enthusiasm, and genuine passion to everything she does. The students she works with know just how much she cares, and their excitement when they see her and have the opportunity to work with her is a wonderful reflection of the connections she builds each day.

Jessica is hardworking and brings a positive attitude to the workplace and is always willing to jump in and help wherever she is needed. We’re grateful to have someone as dedicated, knowledgeable, and caring as Jessica as part of the Sargent team!

The Sargent Center Community Comes Together for the Flutie 5K for Autism in Providence

We were proud to once again take part in the annual Flutie 5K for Autism on October 11th at Roger Williams Park in Providence! Staff, families, friends, and community supporters came together to support a cause that is close to our hearts while raising funds that will directly benefit our students.

In its fifth consecutive year, the Flutie 5K in Providence continued to be a meaningful opportunity for the Sargent Center community to come together, celebrate inclusion, and make a lasting impact. We are grateful to the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism, the brothers of Theta Delta Chi, all of the event sponsors, and everyone who participated, donated, helped spread the word, and supported this year's event.

The Sargent Center Dinosaurs Kick Off Another Season of Special Olympics Competition!

The Sargent Center Dinosaurs recently kicked off the 2026-2027 Special Olympics season with a Flag Football Skills and Drills event at the CLCF Facility in Cranston. This event gave our athletes an opportunity to showcase their abilities, build their skills, and work toward qualifying for the upcoming Fall Games.

Together, our coaches and team of volunteers helped athletes prepare for competition while encouraging teamwork, confidence, and sportsmanship.

The Flag Football Skills and Drills event is a qualifier for the Special Olympics Rhode Island Fall Games, taking place Sunday, November 8th, at Bryant University. We are proud of our Dinosaurs as they begin another season of competition, personal growth, and school spirit. Good luck to our athletes as they continue their Special Olympics journey!

Support the Dinosaurs Year-Round!

The Dinosaurs depend on year-round support to keep doing what they love. This ongoing fundraiser helps cover essentials like uniforms, tournament travel, equipment, training, and all the little things that make a big impact. Every donation helps the Dinsosaurs go further, play harder, and celebrate their achievements with the recognition they deserve.

Sargent Center’s New Kindness Tree Celebrates Good Deeds

October marked the beginning of a new initiative at Sargent Center as we celebrated our designation as a Feinstein Leadership School! Through this initiative, we are bringing kindness to life with our new Kindness Tree, inspired by the theme “Kindness Is Always in Season.”

The Kindness Tree recognizes students’ good deeds, positive interactions, and personal progress. Throughout October, students and staff helped bring the tree to life with festive Halloween-themed decorations, including ghosts, pumpkins, and bats. Each decoration represents a moment worth celebrating, from thoughtful gestures and acts of kindness to positive interactions and individual achievements.

When staff members notice a student doing something kind, making progress, or having a positive interaction, they write a short note on a seasonal decoration and invite the student to personalize it with their name, coloring, stamps, or other creative touches. The completed decorations are then added to the tree for everyone to enjoy.

As the first month comes to a close, the Kindness Tree is already helping shine a light on the everyday moments that make our school community special. With World Kindness Day coming up in November, the tree’s theme and decorations will change, providing new opportunities to recognize kindness and celebrate the positive choices our students make each day.

We look forward to watching our Kindness Tree continue to grow throughout the school year, because at Sargent, kindness is always in season!
