May 2024

May is Youth Services Month!

Greetings Rotarians!

The theme for May is Rotary’s 5th Avenue of Service: Youth Service! Youth Service recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs!

We are incredibly proud of our Interact Clubs, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Camp, and our Rotary Youth Exchange! Interact Clubs have grown, multiplied, and are flourishing this year! Over 100 Interact Students will be at the Interact Conference! Our July 2024 RYLA Camp for High School Students is brimming with excitement and is filling up fast! Youth Exchange is welcoming 4 International Students and needs hosts families ASAP! Rotary’s focus on YOUTH is critical to our growth and our future!

We also celebrate the beginning of our Great Michigan Summer Celebration Season in May, and reenergize our ROTARY SPIRIT at our District Conference, May 3-4, 2024, at the Kalamazoo Radisson Hotel! This Conference offers something of value for EVERYONE and it has truly been a team effort pulling it all together! Thank you to our District Committees and Chairs for coming up with the concept and presenters, to our Clubs & Presidents for the raffle gift baskets & for volunteering wherever needed & for getting the Interactors there! Special thanks to Conference Director Jay Larson, and the amazing Conference Committee for creatively managing programming, advertising, hotel arrangements, logistics, food, entertainment, transportation, our international guest speakers, and a million more things! We look forward to CELEBRATING with you all very soon!

Incase you haven’t registered but would like to catch a service activity or two, there are two options available –

Edison Neighborhood Association/Rotary Urban Garden Fruit Tree Planting is Friday, May 3, 2-4pm, at the garden site behind Bethany Reformed Church on S. Burdick.

Mental Health Team WALK FOR MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS - from the Radisson to Ministry with Community - is Saturday, May 4, 9:30-11am.

Please let Ingrid, Administrator, know if you’d like to join us!

We planned our extra special Conference to coordinate with the Kick-off to Summer Kalamazoo ART HOP on Friday, May 3, 5-8pm! It’s an interactive and festive arts celebration for the whole community! What we didn’t know at the time was that the Kalamazoo Marathon is also happening this same weekend, creating even more excitement throughout town!

What a fantastic Rotary Year we get to celebrate at the Conference! Congratulations on all the Rotary Good you are bringing to your Clubs, to your communities, and to the World! You are fabulous Rotarians and we thank you for everything you do!

In Celebration!

Pop-up Points Matching Campaign for

The Rotary Foundation

Popular Campaign returns for limited time this spring

District Governor Sharalyn Davis and our District’s Rotary Foundation Committee are adding a little fun to our spring end-of-the-Rotary-year events.

They have authorized a special pop-up points-matching program for contributions to The Rotary Foundation’s SHARE program.

This new pop-up campaign kicks off May 1, 2024 and closes June 15, 2024 (or until our pool of available points has been exhausted).

Our pop-up campaign will follow the same guidelines as our previous fall campaign: our District will match your individual donation to the Annual Fund-SHARE of The Rotary Foundation (TRF) with Foundation Recognition Points.

We are able to match donations between $100 and $5,000.

A couple of important caveats for this campaign:

·        Only contributions to TRF’s Annual Fund-SHARE program will be matched.

·        Per TRF rules, points cannot be transferred to clubs – only to individual Rotarians.

·        Per TRF rules, points do not count toward Major Donor recognition, but do count towards Paul Harris Fellow recognition.

Here is how this matching program works:

·        Make your contribution to TRF’s Annual Fund. Your donation may be online via Rotary Direct (using the RI website), or by check.

·        Let us know you have made a contribution and request matching points.

·        Please send a details of your contribution or a copy of your receipt.

·        We will process your match and submit the matching information to The Rotary Foundation.

It’s that easy!

Why are we doing this? Because we believe in The Rotary Foundation, and all the good work made possible by The Rotary Foundation’s Annual Fund!

And we want to encourage our Rotarians to support TRF’s Annual Fund. The more money that is donated to The Annual Fund, the more money comes back to our District to support local TRF grants!

Thank you in advance for supporting The Rotary Foundation! Your support makes everything possible!

Looking Inward: Survey

Yipppee D6360!

We’ve just completed another Mental Health First Aid Training.

D6360 is very pleased for the 26 Rotarians who have completed the training to date, and who have finished/are finishing their final test to be certified Mental Health First Aiders. It’s one more step toward accomplishing RI President Gordon McInally’s initiative to raise awareness; improve access, and erase stigma.  Congratulations!

Mental Health First Aiders learn how to be aware of, and listen to the feelings of others. Equally important, we learn how to be aware of and honor our own mental health needs.

Gordon affirms self-care is critical for the healthy emotional functioning of Rotarians. Our motto Service above Self, implies our deep passion for helping others. At the same time, living in ‘service-mode’ can be wearing.  How can we possibly offer positive help and support to others when our own mental and emotional states are not in balance?

So here it is:

The Looking Inward Mental Health/Wellness survey: Rotary Member Wellbeing Questionnaire

is a quick and easy self-assessment of your personal mental/emotional state. It consists of only eight self-reflection questions – and three of those are optional!

Gordon clearly cares for your emotional wellbeing. Ensuring that you are well-adjusted and happy in your role of service, ensures the ongoing work of Rotary. Thank you for completing the Looking Inward survey: Rotary Member Wellbeing Questionnaire as Gordon will like to have the data for the International Convention.

Here’s the link again: Rotary Member Wellbeing Questionnaire.

Thank you for your ongoing service to Rotary, and for your attention to your own mental and emotional health.

And …

Make sure to visit the Mental Health Welcome Table at District Conference.

See you there.

Giving Year to Date to

The Rotary Foundation

Paul Harris Fellows

Undoubtedly the most important step to promote voluntary giving to The Rotary Foundation occurred in 1957, when the idea of Paul Harris Fellow recognition was first proposed. Although the concept of making $1,000 gifts to the Foundation was slow in developing, by the early 1970s it began to gain popularity. The distinctive Paul Harris Fellow medallion, lapel pin and attractive certificate have become highly respected symbols of a substantial financial commitment to The Rotary Foundation by Rotarians and friends around the world.

The companion to the Paul Harris Fellow is the Paul Harris Sustaining Member, which is the recognition presented to an individual who has given, or in whose honor a gift is made, a contribution of $100, with the stated intention of making additional contributions until $1,000 is reached. At that time the Paul HarrisSustaining Member becomes a Paul Harris Fellow.

By 1994, more than 450,000 Paul Harris Fellows and 160,000 Sustaining Members have been added to the rolls of The Rotary Foundation.

A special recognition pin is given to Paul Harris Fellows who make additional gifts of $1,000 to the Foundation. The distinctive gold pin includes a blue stone to represent each $1,000 contribution up to a total of $5,000 in additional gifts.

Paul Harris recognition provides a very important incentive for the continuing support needed to underwrite the many programs of The Rotary Foundation which build goodwill and understanding in the world.

Make Your Club Irresistible!

Membership Monthly Zooms

Looking for Tips and Techniques to

Help Your Club Grow?

I have never met a Rotarian who didn’t want their club to become more vibrant and attractive to every member and appealing to new members. Every Rotary Club wants their club to succeed, grow, become more irresistible and have a bigger impact on the well-being of their community. After all, we are a membership driven organization that does service in our communities and around the world. The more members we have, the bigger the impact we have in our towns and beyond. And, with more members comes even more people sharing the load and helping with our service projects.

Membership growth continues to be our biggest challenge and our greatest opportunity not only here in our District but around the world. We are making progress, but there is much more to be done. Your District team will soon launch several new initiatives to help every club that wants to grow achieve that goal. I am pleased to share a great resource from our Zone that will help.

Please look at the announcement flyer above offering interesting, timely, short and to the point tips and techniques designed to help make your club irresistible and growing. Just 45 minutes of interactive learning designed for every Rotary member who wants to see their club grow offered monthly over the next 12 months. Just show up and see if there is something for you.
