I encourage everyone to take a moment this Memorial Day to remember the men and women who have died in defense of our freedoms. We remember their sacrifice and the sacrifice of the families of our fallen heroes. Every American owes an incredible debt of gratitude to those who have given their lives defending our freedom.
Nearly one million men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces have sacrificed their lives while defending America in time of war. I wish I could list all of the men and women who have given their lives for us. I hope that this Memorial Day is an opportunity for all of us to remember their stories and reflect on their bravery.
Thousands will gather downtown Saturday for the annual Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Service. The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. at Summit and Monroe streets, runs along Summit to Jackson and concludes at the Civic Center Mall. There will be a ceremony at the Civic Center Mall honoring Toledoans who gave their lives while serving.

The 2019 Residential Road Patch and Repair program, commonly known as "Mill and Fill," is a more permanent fix for residential streets with cracks and minor potholes but do not have heavy truck traffic.
City crews have complete work in Council District 3, including repaving parts of Clark, Jay, 5th, Garfield, Mason, and Oswald. Crews are now working in Council District 4. A status update on the program can be found at
this link
.
The road is first milled to a depth of about 1½ inches, the debris is removed, paving crews place a tack coat, lay hot asphalt, and then roll it to produce a smooth driving surface. The process extends the life of the streets.
The program runs from mid April through October, and the streets are scheduled according to location throughout the city with respect to schools and annual events.
The city
announced
the implementation of a pothole emergency plan this month to fill
50,000 potholes in six week
. A map showing the work can be found at
this link
.
The number of daily pothole crews has been more than quadrupled from four to 19 or 20,
including two Lucas County Engineers Office crews working with the city for two weeks under a partnership to help fill potholes
. More than 34,000 potholes have been filed since the beginning of the effort.

The city of Toledo held its first-ever community Iftar dinner Wednesday at One Government Center. Iftar is the dinner breaking the daily fast during the month of Ramadan.
It was a tremendous display of family, friendship, community and the willingness to learn from one another. Thanks to our many partners in the Muslim community, the Human Relations Commission, and the Equality and Social Justice Committee of the HRC for their work on this event.

I was the guest speaker for the eighth grade graduation of Glenwood Elementary School in D4 this week.
There were 30 graduates and I was extremely proud of all of them. We brought a certificate of congratulations for these amazing young men and women.
In attendance was Dr. Sweeney, Dr. Coleman, Dr. Carnel Smith (Principal of Scott) and Dr. Michael Carr (Principal of Glenwood).
|
|
Dr. Carr had a vision that his graduates should wear robes for graduation and move their tassel to left for the commencement. During the graduation, a parent facing some challenges and uses a wheelchair, was awarded a much-needed refrigerator and about $500 for food. He came to school every day to make sure his children arrived safely. His daughter, Millandra, graduated from Glenwood and she wants to be a veterinarian. She was accepted to Central Catholic School. This was very moving and I hope everyone will wish this young people well!
