AUGUST 2026 | Your monthly connection to advocacy and action!

A message from our President

We have been busy reaching out to voters in our community through candidate forums and updates on voter information so all will be election-ready.

The Judicial Candidate Forum was a great success, letting us hear from candidates from the 7th Judicial District Court. Many thanks to moderator Ann Smith and timer Carla Christianson. We appreciate the work of the Volusia County Bar Association and this opportunity to partner with them.

The NAACP forum last week invited community members to hear from candidates for Daytona Beach zones 1,3, and 5 and at-large seats for Volusia County Council. A wonderful job was done by Ann Smith representing the LWVVC and Gwen Azama-Edwards representing the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

This season, our amendment presentations will include the five amendments to the Volusia County Charter, in addition to the Florida Constitutional amendments. Our team has been working diligently to get this information ready for you. Do you know of an organization that would like to have our Speakers Bureau bring this presentation to you? Contact Ann Smith for more information.

Our next forum is coming right up. Join us for our Volusia County School Board Candidates Forum on August 8 at the Deltona Library; details below.

Membership Matters

LWV Membership Roster Mgr

oah@vyndicar.com

We have 199 paid members, but we are in the midst of renewing members who lapsed in late June and at the beginning of July. About 30 members have yet to renew.

All members have been contacted via personalized emails, text messages, or phone calls. I find that most people do not pick up phone calls unless they have your contact on their phone. This is attributed to the overwhelming amount of spam we all get. Emails come from LWV.org a month before their due date and later directly from me. It makes following up onerous.

Some members prefer not to deal with the portal or make online payments. We have several members who tell me they mailed their check, but it has not been received. If you wish to pay by check, please let me know so I can be on the lookout.

Several members made online payments last year and chose auto renewal, but their payment could not be processed; perhaps their credit card expired, so I had to follow up. We had three people move out of state, which I transferred to their new location.

It would be very helpful if you would put your due date on your calendar to remind yourself it’s renewal time.

Please remember to use the email you first gave to the League to avoid a double entry, which creates a new membership. If you are changing your email, please let me know so I can update the database.
