Greetings,
Amidst significant threats, the UCs continue to break records and make history, all while never losing sight of their mission. Last week, 5 UC faculty and alumni won Nobel Prizes bringing the total number of prizes awarded to UC faculty to 75.
Below is an overview. You can read more about the history making week here.
- Frederick J. Ramsdell, Nobel Prize in medicine for identifying cells that prevent immune system from attacking the body's own tissue (UC San Diego and UCLA alum)
- Omar Yaghi, Nobel Prize in chemistry for creating a new super absorbent molecular construction that can harvest water from dry desert air, capture carbon dioxide, or store toxic gases (UC Berkeley professor)
- John Clarke, Nobel Prize in physics for experiments that underpin today's powerful quantum computers (UC Berkeley emeritus professor)*
- John Martinis, Nobel Prize in physics (UC Santa Barbara emeritus professor)*
- Michel Devoret, Nobel Prize in physics (UC Santa Barbara professor)*
*These 3 University of California faculty received the prize for their shared research.
State and federal funding play a central role in advancing world-changing research, science, and technology in California. In less than 90 days, the Governor's state budget proposal will be shared and UC should be a top priority.
