Shockwave Therapy: How It Accelerates Healing
Subject: Why Shockwave Therapy Is One of My Favorite Treatment Tools
Every year, I see patients who have been dealing with the same injury for months.
Sometimes years.
They've stretched.
They've rested.
They've iced.
They've had massages.
Maybe they've even tried physical therapy before.
Yet every time they try to get back to running, golf, pickleball, or the gym...the pain comes right back.
This is often when we start talking about shockwave therapy.
What the Research Says
Shockwave therapy delivers high-energy acoustic waves into injured tissue, stimulating a healing response within the body.
Research has shown particularly strong results for chronic tendon conditions like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, calcific shoulder tendinitis, and patellar tendinopathy.
I also use it a lot to mobilize IT band, scar tissue, and other connective tissue adhesions.
Rather than simply masking pain, shockwave aims to stimulate tissue healing by increasing blood flow, encouraging new blood vessel formation, and promoting healthy tissue remodeling.
While it isn't appropriate for every condition, it can be an excellent option for chronic injuries that haven't responded to traditional treatment.
How I Treat It
One thing I always tell patients:
Shockwave isn't magic....It's a tool.
The real magic happens when we combine it with the right rehabilitation program.
I use shockwave alongside progressive strengthening, mobility work, manual therapy, activity modification, and patient education.
That combination is what gives people the best chance of long-term success.
Quick Win
If your tendon has hurt for six months, don't expect one treatment to fix it overnight.
Healing chronic tendon injuries is a process.
The goal is consistent progress.
That being said...this therapy has produced some incredible QUICK results and can provide relief or improvement after just one session.
My Takeaway
When used for the right condition and paired with an appropriate rehab program, shockwave therapy can help people finally break the cycle of chronic pain.
Thanks for reading!
My goal has always been to help people understand why they're hurting...not just temporarily feel better.
Whether you're dealing with an injury, trying to stay active, or simply have questions about what you're experiencing, I hope this gave you a better understanding of your body and your recovery.
If this sounds like something you're dealing with, I'd be happy to help.
Stay healthy, keep moving, and remember take good care of your body, it's the only one you get.
