April is Call Before You Dig Month

At Groton Utilities, safety is our top priority—both for our employees and the community we serve. One of the most critical steps in ensuring safety during any excavation project, big or small, is utilizing the Call Before You Dig program.

Why It’s Important

Every year, underground utility lines—including electric, water, gas, and communication lines—are accidentally damaged due to unmarked digging. This can result in power outages, water main breaks, gas leaks, and serious injuries. That’s why state law requires homeowners, contractors, and businesses to call 811 or submit an online request before starting any excavation work.

How It Protects You: Prevents Accidents and Injuries

Striking a buried utility line can cause electrocution, gas leaks, or even explosions. Calling before you dig ensures that all underground utilities are clearly marked, keeping workers and the public safe.

Sump Pumps 101

Why install a sump pump? In many cases, it is necessary in order to keep your home livable, protect the long-term viability of the structure of your home, along with ensuring the health of the occupants.

A sump pump helps prevent basement flooding by automatically removing water that collects in a sump basin, typically located in the lowest part of a home such as a basement.

This is especially useful for homes in areas with high water tables, heavy rainfall, or poor drainage. Keeping the basement dry protects the foundation from water damage and reduces the risk of mold and mildew growth. It also helps preserve valuable items stored in the basement and maintains a healthier indoor environment. Overall, a sump pump provides peace of mind during storms and wet seasons.

An in-home sump pump should never be connected to the sanitary sewer system.

Summer Concerts in the Park are back

The summer is right around the corner and so is our Concerts in the Park music series for 2025. We have an exciting schedule of bands this year, packed with bands new to the park along with a few of our very favorites returning for another go. Additionally, our last show of the summer will be on City Day, our annual celebration of all things City of Groton.

The Friday Night summer concert series is held at Washington Park, Meridian Street in Groton. All concerts start at 6:30 pm and are co-sponsored and co-produced by Groton Utilities and the City of Groton Parks and Recreation Department.

The concerts are designed to be especially appealing to families for a fun, inexpensive night out. Spectators are encouraged to bring their families and enjoy the food trucks and concession stand. The concert site also has sufficient room on the basketball court for dancing. Food schedule will be posted on the City of Groton website as the summer approaches.
