A Note from Headmaster Scott
Dear Archway Trivium West Families,
We study our Western heritage and believe that our cultural inheritance is unique and primary to us by virtue of our being Americans. We believe that in order for students to become culturally literate citizens they must share certain specific knowledge based in the study of the humanities, the sciences, and the fine arts.
This statement is one of Great Hearts’ philosophical pillars. There is a lot of pressure in our modern world to learn about many different cultures early in life. Although we recognize the value in learning how people other than ourselves live, there is a flaw in assuming our children can fully participate in their own culture without having that culture taught and modeled for them. Our focus on Western civilization does not downplay the value of great thinkers, writers, and artists from other parts of the world. Instead, it is an acknowledgement that our students’ own cultural heritage is rich and valuable and merits the primary position in a public school in The United States of America.
So what is special about Western civilization? The west is for everyone. When we speak about Truth, Goodness, and Beauty in the west, we are talking about universal ideas. When we speak of virtue, we speak of human excellence, not excellence within any limited sphere. When the young and charismatic Meno was challenged by Socrates to define virtue, he spoke of the virtue of the man, of the woman, of the merchant, the leader, the child, etc. That did not satisfy Socrates. He pushed until his pupil could articulate virtue as an ideal that spans humanity regardless of ancillary attributes or conditions. This is what western thought does well. It is a philosophy of unification of humanity. That alone may be sufficient reason to make it the focus of study for our young people.
Heartily Devoted,
Clay Scott

Last Friday, families were sent information from Great Hearts about a new giving portal called Classy. We are hoping that this will enhance the giving experience for our donors. Two features to point out:
- More ways to give, including bank transfers, Apple Pay, and even bitcoin; and
- The option to cover the transaction fees to help your charitable giving dollars go even further to benefit Trivium.
As of now, only Academy Giving transactions at Trivium are moving to this new payment portal. If you are already set up to do giving automatically, no further action is needed at this time unless you want to make a change to your giving. Or if you are new to giving, please GIVE it a try & make the most important gift you can possibly make to support our hard-working teachers and the school. If you have any questions, please contact Annann Hong, our Family Giving & Community Engagement Officer, at ahong@archwaytrivium.org or (773) 307-6779.
CONGRATULATIONS – Unity in Community Grand Prize Winners
Congratulations to our two Community Investment donor families, The Densing Family and The Huggins Family, for being randomly chosen to win the Grand Prize last month. They both chose the $100 Amazon gift card. Accepting on behalf of Mr. and Mrs. Marni and Maria Densing are Giuliana ’33 and Gian ’28. Accepting on behalf of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher and Renee Huggins are Naia ’29 and Mara ’31. We are so grateful to all our amazing donors. The additional revenue raised to help cover the gap in public funding makes all the difference in the school’s operating budget! We will be doing another drawing from our Community Investment donors after Giving Tuesday on 11/29/2022! We would love for as many of our families to be part of that drawing as possible!

Register for 3rd-5th Grade Bard Competition by Monday, October 24!
Dear Archway Trivium 3rd-5th Grade Scholars and Families,
Throughout Western civilization, bards have been keepers of tradition, reciting the poetry of their people and passing on oral history. Archway Trivium will again be joining our fellow Great Hearts schools in holding a Bard Competition for our 3rd through 5th grade scholars, whom we will challenge to memorize and recite poetry.
Over the course of two rounds and two poems, we will winnow the field to find Trivium’s most skillful bard. That scholar will be named the 2023 Archway Trivium School Bard and will represent our school at the Great Hearts Archway Bard Competition to be held in April 2023.
The Archway Trivium Bard Competition Registration Guidelines and a Registration Form were sent home earlier this week in scholars’ folders. If your scholar wishes to participate, registration forms and poem selections are due to homeroom teachers no later than Monday, October 24.
Click Here to Complete the Registration Form
Preliminary information pertaining to each round is as follows and will be communicated when finalized:
Round 1 The week of November 28 during school hours
Round 2 The week of February 13, 2023, Trivium Gymnasium
GH Final April 14, 2023, Hosted by Archway Glendale at the Lund Center on Veritas Campus
Bard participants will be excused from memorizing in-class assigned poems until after their recitations for Round 1. The twelve scholars who progress to Round 2 will be excused until their recitations in February 2023. The school’s winner will be excused from any in class assigned poems until the final round at the Great Hearts Competition on April 14.
If you have any questions about the Bard Competition, please contact Mrs. Smith at lsmith@archwaytrivium.org.

Literary & Historical Figure Day is the Half Day, November 4
Save the Date for our second annual Literary & Historical Figure Day on the half day, Friday, November 4. Scholars are invited to choose a literary or historical figure from the Archway curriculum and come to school dressed as that figure* on Friday, November 4. This is a great way to celebrate our love of history and literature. All students are encouraged to participate!
New! Students must complete and return a Costume Proposal Form to their classroom teacher by October 27 in order to participate.
*Please remember that the character you choose should be from one of the Classics-to-Keep from the K-5 list, Greek or Roman Mythology or a historical character from our History or Science curriculum. It’s very important that your character looks like the author’s description of the character and not a movie version. If your costume will be at all see through, you must wear your uniform underneath. If you choose not to participate, you will need to come in uniform. All costumes must abide by dress code guidelines in the Family Handbook and must exclude any frightening or aggressive costumes or accessories.

Traffic Flow for Student Drop-off/Pick-up
With the expansion of Archway and addition of the new building, there are significant changes to the traffic flow for the upcoming school year. Please carefully review the new Archway Traffic Flow for Student Drop-off and Pick-up and reach out with any questions. Taking the time to understand these procedures will help to ensure the safety of our students/staff and a smooth traffic flow.
Carpooling Update: Our east side pick-up lane has had a faster track and will now be our designated carpool lane.
If you have 2 or more Archway ONLY pick-up cards, you will be guided into this fast-track lane for a faster pick-up. Please be sure to have your pick-up cards ready to show our traffic controllers that you are carpooling so they can guide you to the appropriate lane. To maintain the flow of pick-up, others may be directed to the fast-track lane, but carpools will be given priority. Please do not enter the carpool lanes until you are directed to do so.
As a reminder, if you are picking up Middle School students DO NOT ARRIVE to campus before 3:15 PM. This creates significant delays. If you arrive before 3:15, we will ask you to go back into our pick-up lanes and try again.
Please follow the link below to review the DETAILED Archway Traffic Flow Plan and be sure to share this link with anyone authorized to drop-off/pick-up your children.
