Volunteers... Thank You for Making Our Community Better!
This is our 10th Deputy Mayor's Exchange. I hope you are finding the content useful.
This coming weekend is the 50th Anniversary of the
Unionville Festival. Get out and enjoy the great lineup of things to see and do on Main Street. The Festival is run by a group of volunteers!
Thanks to
Unionville Tennis Club for inviting me to their opening day. Opening day for the
Markham Tennis Club is next weekend (as it got rained out on Saturday). Both of these organizations are run by volunteers!
So many of our community activities such as clubs, festivals, seniors activities, coaches of all kinds of sports, occur because of the extraordinary voluntary efforts of our residents.
A big thank you to all of those
community volunteers out there. We couldn't do it without you. Our community is better because of your efforts!

A group of dedicated parents from Central Park PS are planning the school's first Fun Fair to celebrate the school's 30th anniversary. They are hoping to make this an annual event. The school has a strong community spirit with the parents volunteering and supporting events such as this one.
The money raised will go towards funding an initiative to support our students' educational experiences, such as field trips, sports team jerseys, and access to new technology. If you live near the school and have younger children, please stop by and support their efforts.

Thank you to our York Region Paramedics!
May 26 to June 1, 2019, is Paramedic Services Week (PSW), which celebrates paramedics across Canada who deliver exceptional care to residents and visitors in their communities; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This year’s theme for PSW is “Celebrating Successes” which recognizes the many successes of paramedics, from delivering necessary medical treatment to patients, to engaging and educating residents in our communities.
In 2018, York Region's 500 paramedics continued their important role in healthcare by responding to over 83,000 calls, transporting over 61,000 patients and delivering 43 babies. They also taught more than 4,000 people CPR through their CPR month outreach, distributed over 32,000 personal medical info kits to elderly residents, and reduced their carbon footprint by investing in hybrid ambulances. YR Council responded to the Provincial regional governance review and has passed a
resolution supporting the Region’s two-tier government structure
as the most effective means to deliver critical infrastructure and services to YR communities and residents.
Over the past 48 years, YR Council has considered the issue of governance a number of times, mostly with respect to council composition and representation by population.
In January, the Provincial Government announced a
review of Regional governments
to ensure they are working efficiently and effectively to provide vital services. The review specifically looks to improve on governance, decision-making and service delivery at the municipal level.
|
|
The Provincial Regional Governance Review included two consultations with elected and appointment council members, municipal and business stakeholders and members of the public who live and work in York Region. The Provincial government is expected to report back on consultation findings in fall 2019.

Green Inspection signs
are given to establishments that pass inspections. A sticker on the sign shows whether or not a food establishment has at least one certified food handler on-site at the time of inspection.

York Region’s
2019 Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan
includes targets for an energy-wise vision of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from Region owned and operated facilities and assets to 2051.
York Region completed its first energy plan in 2014 and it was updated in 2016. The initiatives were developed in collaboration with Regional departments, York Regional Police and Housing York Inc. and will be updated every five years.
York Region owns and operates over $12.3 billion in assets in the form of buildings, transit vehicles, fleet vehicles, water and wastewater facilities and supporting infrastructure. The plan outlines ways the Region can further reduce energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through a mix of conservation, efficiency and renewable energy alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions...
|
|
As an ongoing section in these email updates, I would like to provide answers to some commonly asked questions by residents.
If you have a question that you would like answered, please send me an email with your question.
|
|
Question:
M
y green bin has been damaged through wear and tear over the years, how can I have it replaced? I heard Toronto residents just call a number and leave the old green bin on the driveway and they will send a replacement for free. Do we have similar service in Markham?
|
Answer:
While we have advocated for free
blue bin
or
green bin
replacement, staff do not support a totally free replacement bin. They believe that if the bins are totally free residents will bring their dirty and mildly scratched bins in for replacement unnecessarily. So right now if you need your bin replaced it is at a cost of $5.50 plus tax for a new bin and that can be done at any of our recycling depots. Payment is by debit/cheque only ... no cash accepted.
