NEWS RELEASE - Commenting Period Opens for Strada Aggregates ARA Application on September 11
September 8, 2025 - Melancthon, ON – The Township of Melancthon has been notified that the 60-day commenting period under the Aggregate Resources Act (ARA) for the Strada Aggregates Application for a quarry operation within its existing 360-acre sand and gravel pit, will commence on Thursday, September 11, 2025, and will close on Tuesday, November 10, 2025.
During this commenting period, landowners and residents will have an opportunity to provide any concerns they may have to the applicant and Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. The applicant will have an opportunity to work with landowners and residents to resolve their concerns. At the end of the commenting process, landowners and residents will have an opportunity to confirm any concerns that have not been fully addressed. The MNRF may then refer any unresolved concerns or objections to the Ontario Land Tribunal for a hearing.
There is also an opportunity for members of the public to make comments on the Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO) website. These comments are not generally referred to the OLT for a hearing, but may be considered by the MNRF in its own decision making process. The Township will post a link to the ERO website once it becomes available. This link can be found under Public Notices and on the Strada Aggregates page under Planning on the Township website. The link to the Strada Aggregates page can be found here.
An in-person Public Information Session has been scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Horning’s Mills Community Hall located at 14 Mill Street in Horning’s Mills.

Green Tip: Preserve Your Garden
As summer winds down and the first frost approaches, it’s time to make the most of your vegetable garden’s bounty. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just getting started, preserving your harvest is a rewarding way to extend the life of your produce and reduce waste.
Canning is Cool Again
Canning has made a comeback—and for good reason. It allows you to enjoy your fruits and vegetables long after the growing season ends, reducing your reliance on imported produce and lowering your carbon footprint. From tomatoes to pickles to jams, there’s a canning method for nearly every crop.
Drying Herbs for Winter Use
If you’ve been growing herbs, don’t let them go to waste! Drying and storing herbs is simple and effective. Resources like The Spruce offer great tips for preserving herbs so you can enjoy their flavour all winter long.
Give Back: Donate Your Surplus
Have more produce than you can use? Consider donating fresh fruits and vegetables to local food banks. Many organizations welcome garden surplus and are especially grateful for fresh, nutritious options. It’s a wonderful way to support your community and ensure nothing goes to waste.
Let’s celebrate the season by preserving what we’ve grown and sharing with those in need.
Happy Harvesting!
