Rule Chapter 5-St. Angela Merici

A Note from the President

Hello all! Next week marks the beginning of Lent and I have an invitation for you…

As you know, Serviam (I will serve) is the motto of Ursuline Academy. Over their four years here, students are immersed in this core value shared by all Ursuline schools and exemplified by St. Angela, who found her own unique path toward service to God and neighbor. Unlike the typical cloistered orders of the day, she established a company of women who served within the communities they called home. Angela was also pragmatic in that she focused on what she could realistically accomplish for others rather than taking on the bigger issues.

We tend to speak of Serviam specifically in terms of structured community service. As our students work toward fulfilling their service hours, the focus is on helping those who exist in impoverished circumstances, be it economic poverty, isolation or a case of social injustice. This service can feel somewhat removed from regular daily life, an addition to the already packed calendar.

Like the earliest Ursuline Sisters, how might we find ways to also serve those we see in the course of our day? I’m suggesting that as we enter the season of Lent, we consider that Serviam can also occur within our families and workplaces, at the grocery store, or any of the other places where we spend time.

Do you mentor a young professional in your office? That’s Serviam! Have you given a call of encouragement to a friend undergoing difficult medical treatment? Serviam! Maybe you’ve provided financial support to Ursuline or another nonprofit organization. Or volunteered to take on a project that your coworkers dread. Serviam happens in so many ways!

Serviam is more than the acts … it is truly a mindset. Serviam lives where the heart is open, the spirit is hopeful and the mind propels to action.

My invitation this Lenten season is that you reflect on the ways you live a Serviam mindset and discuss it with your daughter. By your example, she will see that no matter the interests she pursues at UA, the college she attends or the profession she chooses, the opportunities to serve others surround her every day.

Lenten Season - Foundations of Hope

This Lenten season, Ursuline will focus on the theme, “Foundations of Hope.” Pope Francis tells us, “Hope does not disappoint. Everyone knows what it is to hope. In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation for good things to come, despite not knowing what the future will bring.” Christian hope is not wishful optimism but a confident expectation rooted in the character and promises of God’s love for each of us. It is an anchor in the storms of life that roots us in faith and gives us direction. Pope Francis has declared 2025 the Jubilee Year of Hope. This Lenten season, as we anticipate this hope that is renewed at Easter, we must first recognize the obstacles to hope in our own lives. As you think about your own life, what areas do you need to find renewed hope? What situations or relationships need to be seen with new eyes, a new sense of optimism?

Please join us this Lent:
