NATIONAL FIRST RESPONDERS DAY

October 28th sets aside National First Responders Day to honor the men and women who act quickly when an emergency is at hand.

First responders dedicate their lives to save lives. They are the people who run toward a crisis while the rest of the world flees. According to the Department of Homeland Security, 4.6 million career and volunteer first responders support the communities where they live. They are firefighters, police, emergency medical technicians (EMT), paramedics, and 911 operators. In an emergency, they're the first on the scene. These dedicated professionals answer the call when a crisis arises, often putting their own lives on the line.

Serving as a national day of gratitude, we pay tribute to their endless hours and around the clock service provided to their communities. As one of the most dangerous jobs in the country, the day also pays tribute to the fallen first responders. According to the CDC, 97 firefighters and 155 police officers die each year in the line of duty. Additionally, their rate of occupational injury is higher than the national average. Often, the very people saving lives are our neighbors, friends and family members. And their families know the price they pay for their dedication to the job.

And even though they are an integral part of our communities, their sacrifices go beyond the hours they work. They face high stress, often daily. The trauma they see wears on them both mentally and physically. Many experience Post Traumatic Stress. Long periods away from family add stress to their relationships, too.

National First Responders Day is also a call for action. First responders deserve our support. Through resources and awareness, first responders can live healthier more productive lives and pass their knowledge and skills on to the next generation of first responders, too.

City Buildings to Undergo Exterior and Window Cleaning

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans announces that starting Friday, Nov. 1, exterior and window cleaning of various City buildings will begin. These buildings will include City Hall, Civil Courts, and the City Hall Annex Building.

Exterior pressure washing will be performed by Rolling Suds New Orleans and Alpha Drones, while window cleaning will be handled by ACME Window Cleaners and Geaux Stars. The innovative pressure washing will be completed via “soft wash” with drone technology to preserve the delicacy of the buildings. Once the pressure washing drones are completed, the window cleaning will begin to address the remaining restoration.

This work is expected to enhance appearance, preserve deterioration, and restore healthy working spaces once completed. During this time, early morning and evening weekend work will be required, and crews will strategically adjust one portion of the building at a time. The workflow approach chosen will ensure building functionality continues as restoration progresses.

Questions about this work can be directed to the Office of Strategic Engagement & Special Projects by dialing 504.658.7623 or emailing ose@nola.gov.

To better serve residents with more timely communication, the Office of Strategic Engagement is in the process of building a distribution list to provide important construction updates through text messaging.

8 AM - 12 PM

Uptown Square

200 Broadway Street at the River

Directions and Parking Tips

The Tuesday Market is located Uptown near the Mississippi River levee at Tulane University Square (originally known Uptown Square). Find us in the northeast corner of the parking lot between Leake Avenue and Broadway Street. There's plenty of free onsite parking.

RTA Lines 57, 31, and 32 pass right by market! Click here to view route 57 or click here for route 31/32.

From I-10

From I-10/Pontchartrain Expressway, take the South Carrollton exit. If you're coming from Metairie, the ramp will merge with South Carrollton heading toward the Mississippi River; if driving from Downtown or New Orleans East, turn left at the first traffic signal (Palmetto Street) then right at South Carrollton. Go 2.2 miles to the end of South Carrollton and turn left on Leake Avenue. With the levee on your right, continue 0.8 miles; the Market will be in the parking lot to your left, just before Leake meets Broadway.

New Book Details America’s Deadliest Day in WWII

LISTEN NOW

In this episode of World War II On Topic, Museum Military Historian Bradley W. Hart, PhD, talks with Rona Simmons, author of No Average Day: The 24 Hours of October 24, 1944, which chronicles the US Armed Forces’ single deadliest day of World War II. More than 2,600 Americans perished around the world on October 24, 1944—more than on any other single day of the conflict—yet the day remains overshadowed by more widely remembered dates in WWII history.

What is the modern equivalent of the word "stout"?

Weak

Strong

Angry

Fearful

The modern equivalent of the word "stout" is "strong." While "stout" traditionally described a robust physicality or a stout-hearted attitude, "strong" encompasses a broader range of meanings in contemporary usage. It can refer to physical strength, emotional resilience, or even the potency of ideas and convictions. In today's language, "strong" conveys a sense of power and effectiveness, whether discussing a person's character, a relationship, or a product’s quality. As society increasingly values both mental and physical fortitude, "strong" has become a versatile term that resonates across various contexts, making it a fitting replacement for "stout."

Zombie Paintball Returns to NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale

07:00 October 04, 2024

By: Charles Andre Blanchard

Celebrate the Spooky Season

Beginning October 10 and extending until November 2, attendees to Zombie Paintball can celebrate the Halloween season with a monstrous bang (and potentially satisfy their need for speed).

Festivities

This popular seasonal activity once again returns to the premier racing facility in Avondale, this time with an enhanced festival area and zombie-hunting scenes, courtesy of their new partnership with Mardi Gras Productions. The 20-minute experience includes a bus ride to designated target stations, where riders will test their accuracy and try to defeat all the zombie enemies. They are also given a chance to reload their guns and go back through the stations before finishing.

Guests can also explore nearby festivities to celebrate the Halloween season. Food trucks will be present, along with stations for pumpkin carving and face painting. Local craft vendors and more themed-attractions make this a great family-friendly stop this Halloween. For the adults, drink specials will also be offered on several days.

NOTE: The only targets are the zombies. Attendees will not be harmed or shot at. However, children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Pricing & Packages

General admission begins at $22 per person and includes a rental paintball gun and 150 rounds of ammo.

For $45, Guests can purchase the Zombie Paintball + Karting package, which includes the aforementioned rental gun and ammo but also an added go-kart session on the NOLA Motorsports track.

Have a large group? NOLA Motorsports also offers a $650 party package. With this, up to 28 people can skip the line and each receive a commemorative bandana before boarding a private bus and being given the accompanying rental guns and ammo.

For tickets, visit the NOLA Motorsports Park's box office or their website.

Hours & Dates of Operation

The attraction will be open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the following days:

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Explain

flummox

/ˈflə-məks/

Definition: To perplex or bewilder someone; to confuse or baffle.

Origin: The word "flummox" is believed to have originated in the early 19th century, possibly derived from a dialectal English word meaning "to perplex" or "to confuse."

Example: The complicated instructions for assembling the furniture flummoxed even the most experienced DIY enthusiasts.

"Flummox" means to confuse or perplex someone, highlighting a state of bewilderment that can arise in challenging situations. It often implies a level of surprise or disorientation that leaves individuals unsure of how to proceed. For instance, when faced with a complex problem or unexpected outcome, one might feel flummoxed, struggling to grasp the situation. This term captures the essence of confusion, where thoughts become tangled, and clarity is lost. In everyday usage, "flummox" conveys a more intense or humorous degree of confusion, making it a vivid way to describe moments of mental uncertainty.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, October 28

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE DAY

National Chocolate Day, on October 28th, recognizes one of the world's favorite tastes. While many specific chocolate-related holidays exist throughout the year, National Chocolate Day celebrates all things chocolate.

Chocolate earns its day of honor by being America's favorite flavor. (Some sources designate July 7 or December 28 as Chocolate Day or International Chocolate Day.)

How is chocolate made?

Chocolate comes from the seed of the tropical Theobroma cacao tree. Humans have been cultivating cacao for at least three millennia. The plant grows in Mexico, Central America, and Northern South America. Historians document the earliest known use of cacao seeds at around 1100 BC.

The intense, bitter taste of cocoa requires the bean to be fermented to develop the flavor.

Research suggests that chocolate, when eaten in moderation, can lower blood pressure.

Once fermented, the beans are dried, cleaned, and roasted. After roasting, the shell is removed to produce cacao nibs. The cacao nibs are then ground into cocoa mass, which is pure chocolate in rough form. The cocoa mass is usually liquefied then molded with or without other ingredients. At this point in the process, it is called chocolate liquor. The chocolate liquor may then be processed into two components: cocoa solids and cocoa butter.

  • Unsweetened baking chocolate – cocoa solids and cocoa butter in varying proportions.
  • Sweet chocolate – cocoa solids, cocoa butter or other fat and sugar.
  • Milk chocolate – sweet chocolate with milk powder or condensed milk.
  • White chocolate – cocoa butter, sugar, and milk but no cocoa solids.

Lost in Translation: Hilarious Language Fails from Around the World

Have you ever traveled to a foreign country and found yourself laughing at the amusing and often confusing translations you encountered? Language is a fascinating aspect of culture, but it can also lead to some hilarious misunderstandings. In this blog post, we will explore some of the most memorable language fails from around the world that will surely leave you chuckling.

Lost in Translation: When Words Take a Funny Turn

Traveling to a country where you don't speak the language can be an exciting yet challenging experience. While technology has made it easier to navigate through unknown territories, there are still instances where translations go hilariously wrong. Let's dive into some of the most amusing language fails that will make you appreciate the complexity of communication.

"Translate Server Error"

Technology has undoubtedly made the world a smaller place, but sometimes even the most advanced systems can't escape embarrassing translations. In China, the popular search engine "Baidu" once had a glitch that caused the English translation to display as "Translate Server Error." While it was a technical issue, it left users perplexed and amused at the same time.

Beware of the "Chicken Intestine"

When traveling to exotic destinations, trying local delicacies can be a thrilling adventure. However, the language barrier can sometimes lead to unexpected surprises. In Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, you might come across street food stalls selling "Chicken Intestine." While it may sound bizarre to some, it's actually a mistranslation for "Chicken Satay," a popular grilled skewered chicken dish. So, next time you're in Thailand, don't be fooled by the unusual menu item!

"Fart Bar" - Lost in Translation or Perfectly Descriptive?

In South Korea, you may stumble upon a curious sign that reads "Fart Bar." While it may sound like a strange place to visit, it's actually a case of a translation gone wrong. The sign should have said "Art Bar," a trendy establishment where people gather to appreciate various art forms. Nevertheless, the mistranslation has garnered attention and even a cult following, making it a unique and unforgettable stop for curious travelers.

Lost in Translation: The Wonders of Engrish

One of the most well-known examples of hilarious language fails comes from Japan, where the term "Engrish" was coined. Engrish refers to the humorous and often nonsensical use of English in Japanese signage, advertisements, and product packaging. From quirky t-shirts with nonsensical phrases to amusing menu items, Engrish has become a source of entertainment for both locals and visitors alike.

"Special Children's Menu: Fried Husband"

When it comes to menu translations, there is a wealth of amusing examples that are sure to make you chuckle. In China, a restaurant once displayed a menu item that left everyone scratching their heads – "Special Children's Menu: Fried Husband." While it may sound like an extreme solution to domestic disputes, it was simply a mistranslation for "Fried Pork Chops." Let's hope no husbands were harmed during the translation process!

"Slip and Fall Down Carefully"

Signage is another area where language fails can lead to humorous results. In Japan, you may come across signs cautioning you to "Slip and Fall Down Carefully." While it may seem like a contradictory statement, it's actually an attempt to warn people about slippery surfaces. The intention is genuine, but the translation leaves room for interpretation and laughter.

The Lost Art of Translation

Translating idiomatic expressions from one language to another can be particularly challenging. In Germany, the phrase "Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof" is commonly used to express confusion or lack of understanding. However, when translated literally, it means "I only understand train station." While it may sound strange in English, it perfectly captures the frustration of being lost in a conversation.

Conclusion: Embracing the Humor of Language Fails

Language is a wonderful tool that allows us to connect with others and understand different cultures. However, it's important to remember that translations can sometimes go hilariously wrong, leading to amusing and memorable experiences. The language fails we've explored from around the world remind us to approach communication with a sense of humor and to embrace the beauty of diversity in language. So, the next time you find yourself lost in translation, remember to laugh and appreciate the humorous side of language.

BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS - Minrose Gwin

Join us for an evening with author Minrose Gwin when she presents and signs her new novel, BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS.

From Minrose Gwin, award-winning author of The Accidentals, comes Beautiful Dreamers, a story of a precocious teen and her mother, their gay best friend, and the con man who unravels their family.

It’s 1953 when Memory Feather and her mother, Virginia, are welcomed back home to the Mississippi Gulf Coast community of Belle Cote by Virginia’s childhood friend Mac McFadden, whose verve and energy buoy the recently divorced Virginia to embrace this new chapter. Memory (“Mem”) is unlike other girls: she is attuned to the voices of plants and animals and is missing two fingers on her twisted left hand. The three of them knit their lives together and become a close, though unconventional, family.

While Mac’s wealth, brains, and good humor have allowed him to carve out a niche in Belle Cote, his position as a gay man active in the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement exposes him to censure, harassment, and even brutality. When the unscrupulous and charismatic Tony Amato arrives in Belle Cote as Mac’s “guest,” he sets in motion a series of events that will shatter familial bonds and forever change Mem’s life. Now, an adult Mem recounts the story of the scars Tony left in her teenage years, confronting her culpability in the disastrous events of that final summer.

Sweeping, dramatic, and vividly rendered, Beautiful Dreamers is a novel of innocence and betrayal, love and intolerance, and the care and honesty we owe the families we choose.

Minrose Gwin is the author of the novels The Queen of Palmyra, a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick and finalist for the John Gardner Fiction Book Award; Promise, which was shortlisted for the Willie Morris Award in Southern Literature; and The Accidentals, which received the 2020 Mississippi Institute for Arts and Letters Award in Fiction. Her fourth novel, Beautiful Dreamers, has just been released by Hub City Press. She has also published a memoir, Wishing for Snow, about the collision of poetry and psychosis in her mother’s life, and four books of literary and cultural criticism, most recently Remembering Medgar Evers: Writing the Long Civil Rights Movement. She was coeditor of The Literature of the American South, a Norton anthology, and The Southern Literary Journal. She received the Society for the Study of Southern Literature Richard Beale Davis Award for Distinguished Lifetime Service to Southern Letters and the William Wisdom/William Faulkner Books-in-Process Award for Rescue, the novel she’s working on now.

Like the characters in her novel Promise, Minrose Gwin is a native of Tupelo, Mississippi. She began her writing career as a journalist and later taught at universities across the country, most recently the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was Kenan Eminent Professor of English. She now lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with her partner, Ruth Salvaggio, and several loquacious four-leggeds.

Get out your lederhosen, spruce up your dirndls and prepare to eat and drink German style — It’s time for Oktoberfest at Middendorf’s!  Oktoberfest is an annual tradition that runs for 6 weeks, every Wednesday and Thursday, at Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell. It starts on Oktober 2, 2024 and ends on November 7, 2024. That’s right… Oktoberfest is so much fun that it spills over into November!

There is a different Oktoberfest meal available each week (while supplies last):

APPETIZERS

  • Kartoffelpuffer mit Apfel Sosse 8.75  (German Potato Pancake with Apple Sauce)
  • Maultaschen in Brühe mit Gerösteten Zwiebeln 10.95  (German Ravioli in Broth)

  • It’s the Chef’s Choice which appetizers will be available each week. Stay tuned!

ENTREES & DESSERTS (A different meal is available each week of Oktoberfest.)

  • 10/30/24 & 10/31/24 — Schweinshaxe, Bayerischkraut und Brezel 21.50  (Pork Hind Shank/Ham Hock, Smothered Cabbage and Pretzel);  Apfel Strudel mit Vanille Eis 7.25  (Apple Strudel with Vanilla Ice Cream)

11/6/24 & 11/7/24 — Wiener Schnitzel und Geröstet Semmelknödel mit Pilzrahmsoße, Gemischtem Salat und Brezel  19.50  (Breaded Thin Pork Loin and Dumpling with Mushroom Cream Sauce, Salad and Pretzel);  Schwarzwälderkirschtorte 7.25 (Black Forest Cake)

The German expertise comes from Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer who is a native of Germany.  He grew-up in the hamlet of Bächlingen where his family still lives today.  The village was established in 950 AD and boasts a grand population of around 150 people.

“It’s an honor to share my German heritage with everyone through the recipes that I grew up with,” said Middendorf’s Owner Horst Pfeifer.  “I think Louis Middendorf would have been so happy to see Oktoberfest here at the restaurant.  Louis was also from Germany, and he founded Middendorf’s back in 1934 with his wife, Josie.  It’s funny because Middendorf’s is so widely known for seafood that a lot of people don’t realize that Middendorf is actually a German name.”

  • During Oktoberfest, there is a different German meal available each week for lunch and dinner, 10:30am-9:00pm (while supplies last).  Guests who eat an Oktoberfest meal for all six weeks will receive an Oktoberfest Prize!  Punch cards must be punched each week and turned in on the final week.
  • The full regular menu is also available for guests. So, you can have a German meal, and your friend can have the Thin Fried Catfish. Everyone’s happy!
  • Of course, we have a great selection of German beer and liqueur to go with your German meal (see below).
  • Authentic German music is also in store for Oktoberfest. We’ll have live accordion music every night of Oktoberfest, 4:30pm-8:30pm. In Manchac, David C. Symons will join us. In Slidell, Will Robichaux will play for the 1st week, and then for the next 5 weeks, it will be Greg Speck (aka Captain Squeeze).
  • Join in the fun by dressing up in your favorite lederhosen, dirndls and German accessories just like our front of house staff. We’ll have a great variety of hats and souvenirs in our gift shop.

All Saints’ Day and All Souls Day

As we approach Halloween, we are also closing in on All Saints' Day (November 1st) and All Soul's Day (November 2nd) -- also known as the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed and the Day of the Dead. The Catholic Church teaches that the purification of the souls in Purgatory can be hastened by the actions of the faithful on earth.

Thus began the custom in New Orleans of gathering at the tombs of their deceased family members on All Saints' Day to clean and refurbish the exterior façade of the tombs, shown here in an 1885 engraving. Far from solemn, it was quite the community event with friends and neighbors sharing stories of their loved ones, and perhaps a simple meal as they worked.

Sadly, with many families being scattered throughout the country, many tombs have fallen into disrepair as surviving family in many cases is unaware of the existence of a family plot. known as the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed and the Day of the Dead. Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean, has a fascinating wine culture that's shaped by its unique blend of French and Italian influences, rugged terrain, and Mediterranean climate. Despite being part of France, Italy’s influence on Corsica is profound, shaping the island’s culture, language, architecture, cuisine, and especially its wine traditions. Corsica was under Genoese rule for nearly five centuries (from the late 13th century until 1768), and its proximity to Tuscany and Sardinia also contributed to strong Italian connections.

Most of the Corsican grapes have ties to Italy as well. Nielluccio is Corsica’s most important red grape and is genetically very similar to Sangiovese, Italy’s iconic grape, particularly from Tuscany. Vermentino, known in Corsica as Malvoisie de Corse, is widely planted in both Corsica and Sardinia, as well as in regions of mainland Italy like Liguria and Tuscany. It is thought to have originated from Italy, possibly Liguria, and spread across the Mediterranean. Sciaccarello, another key red grape of Corsica, is believed to be related to Mammolo, a lesser-known grape from Tuscany. Mammolo is often used in blends, such as in Chianti, but in Corsica, Sciaccarello has developed a distinct identity.

Even after France acquired Corsica in 1768, Italian influence remained deeply embedded in the island’s identity. Many Corsicans still feel a closer cultural affinity to Italy than to mainland France, especially given the shared history, language, and food traditions. This dual identity makes Corsica unique within France, with its Italian roots constantly blending with French culture to create something distinct. It also contributes to the island’s distinctive wine style—one that’s both rustic and refined, combining the structure of Italian reds with the elegance of French whites.

Corsican wines are still relatively under the radar, which makes them an exciting discovery for wine drinkers looking for something new and unique. Dave Sobiesk will accompany us on this tour as Artisan Fine Wines has a great selection from the island for us to choose from. I hope you'll join us! Use this link for tickets,Corsica

This will be the second consecutive game LSU will play on ABC in primetime.

LSU faced Alabama at the same time the past two seasons. Last seasons game was on CBS.

The Tigers lost their second game of the year this past weekend to Texas A&M, falling 38-23 in College Station.

LSU held a 17-7 lead at halftime but three interceptions from redshirt junior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and the Aggies switching quarterbacks — replacing Conner Weigman with Marcel Reed — jolted a 31-6 run for Texas A&M in the second

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!

We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.
