MAYOR'S UPDATE
From the desk of Mayor Rika Levin
Last week, the Ossining Fire Department was called to an emergency at a home on Charles Place in the Village. Upon arrival, they found the house to be completely engulfed in flames. While the home was sadly destroyed, our bravest were able to enter the home and save the resident's life. On occasions like these, the risks taken by our Fire Department prove their bravery. I want to express my deepest gratitude and pride for the department's courage under such pressure as well as the Ossining Police Department and OVAC, who were also on the scene helping the victim. It takes a team of our first responders to keep us all safe. As an update: I personally spoke with the victim's family member to check in on our resident's condition. I am happy to report that he is recovering well and breathing on his own at this point.
Did you know that April is National Volunteer Month? Did you also know that Ossining has more than 150 registered non-profits? It's a good time to remind ourselves that there are many wonderful opportunities to do more for the people and places in our lives. I also want to take this opportunity to remind the community that our local Fire department is holding an open house, so please stop by Ossining Fire Department Headquarters, located at 21 State Street, on Sunday, April 23rd, from 11 AM – 2 PM for an open house! Our event is Family friendly, and we'll have food, giveaways, and fire truck rides!
We live in an incredible county where various services are available to us in the most convenient way. Protect your identity and personal information. Gather your confidential documents and bring them to the Westchester County Shredder event on Saturday, April 15, from 10AM – 1PM at the Joseph G Caputo Community Center.
To continue our theme of voluntarism, I am so pleased to inform the community that three Ossining Volunteers will be honored at Volunteer New York’s 43rd Annual Volunteer Spirit Awards on May 5th, 2023! Congratulations to Carolyn Van Ness, Carlos Carpio, and OHS student Sam Nadol.

  • Carolyn Van Ness began volunteering at Hospice of Westchester in 2016 as an office volunteer and “friendly visitor” to hospice patients and bereaved family members. She created a "Widow to Widow" program at Hospice of Westchester, which provides a unique opportunity for an open and non-judgmental dialogue between women who have lost their partners with the goal of fostering a sense of healing and growth.

  • Carlos Carpio is an Ecuadorian immigrant that volunteers with Ossining Padres Hispanos (OPH). OPH's mission is to provide low-income individuals and families, notably new immigrants and community members, critical support and equitable opportunities in the greater Ossining area that can increase their self-sufficiency and financial stability. Carlos is especially passionate about helping to manage OPH's English as a Second Language (ESL) program, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification program, Home Health Aide (HHA) training, and U.S. citizenship classes for immigrant populations.

  • Sam Nadol is a 17-year-old whose passion for refurbishing computers started in middle school and quickly became a small online business. During COVID, he realized that there were many people in need of PC’s. In response to community needs, he launched RebootPC, a small non-profit organization where locals can donate computers, make donations, or apply for a reconditioned computer on a first-come, first-served basis. To date, he has repaired and donated more than 257 units to people in need.

If you would like to learn more about the organization or participate in its fundraiser, please contact them directly at www.volunteernewyork.org
The 13th annual Green Ossining Earth Day Festival is being held this Saturday, April 15th, from 10AM – 5PM. The free community event will feature interactive activities for all ages at the Louis Engel Waterfront Park, adjacent to the Ossining Train Station.

Come and spend the day by the Hudson River, celebrating our planet while learning how to reduce your environmental
impact. There will be performances by KJ Denhert & Friends, Honey Wild, Mike Risko Band, Julie Corbalis, Claremont School Chorus, and many more! This event is held rain or shine – and I look forward to seeing you there!

We will begin with a Special Meeting on the front lawn of 16 Croton at 6:30PM for two OPD promotions (Lieutenant -> Captain Donohue and Lieutenant -> Detective Lieutenant Zimmerman).
