NATIONAL ANOTHER LOOK UNLIMITED DAY
National Another Look Unlimited Day on the day after Labor Day provides an opportunity for Fall cleaning.
Are you feeling green? Has stuff piled up around the house since Spring cleaning time? This observance is a day dedicated to taking a look around your home and ridding it of the excess things you have accumulated. Think Spring cleaning meets Fall cleaning.
It's time to clear out the closets. Purge the attic. Donate toys and clothes. Tidy up, clean up and put to use those items that have a purpose!
Just because people throw it out and don't have any use for it, doesn't mean it's garbage. ~ Andy Warhol
Before you decide to haul things to the trash, consider that many items have multiple uses. Re-purposing an item that appears to be no longer useful can be quite satisfying. Need some creative inspiration? Check out Pinterest or Etsy. Savvy moms convert old cribs into useful arts and crafts centers or use broken dressers as books shelves or wine racks.
When you no longer find your old items useful, others might. Your trash could very well be someone else's treasure. So consider selling or donating it to someone who will give it new life.

Storm tracker: National Hurricane Center tracking 3 storms in Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico
Julia Gomez and Jennifer Sangalang, USA TODAY
The 2024 hurricane season has been fairly quiet so far, but the National Hurricane Center is tracking three tropical disturbances with low to medium chances of developing after Labor Day weekend.
The three tropical systems could form in the North Atlantic, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, according to a tropical weather outlook from the National Hurricane Center. They are near the following locations:
- Northwestern Gulf of Mexico, just offshore of the upper Texas coast
- Near the Lesser Antilles and Caribbean Sea
- Eastern Tropical Atlantic Ocean, over western Africa
None of the storms have been named, and there is a less than 45% chance they will develop in the next seven days, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Will there be more hurricanes? After an Atlantic hurricane season pause, are the tropics starting to stir?
Atlantic storm tracker
As the Labor Day weekend begins, the National Hurricane Center is tracking three separate tropical disturbances in the Atlantic Ocean.
Storm developing in Gulf of Mexico
The storm off of the Texas coast is expected to move inland on Tuesday, but the storm has not developed into a tropical storm or hurricane.
It's expected to "meander near the coast for the next couple of days," according to the National Hurricane Center. It will likely produce thunderstorm activity near the Texas and Louisiana coasts.
If it remains in the water, slow development is possible. Still, regardless of its formation, heavy rain could cause flash flooding across coastal Louisiana and Texas' upper coast.
There is a 10% chance it will develop in 48 hours, and a 10% chance it will develop in seven days.
Tropical wave by Lesser Antilles, Caribbean Sea
A tropical wave that is several hundred miles away from the Lesser Antilles, an arc of islands in the Caribbean, is expected to move westward and reach the grouping of islands by Monday before crossing the eastern Caribbean Sea on Tuesday.
On Monday, portions of the islands could face "gusty winds" and heavy rainfall, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The storm has a medium chance of developing over the next 7 days. A tropical depression could form later in the week as conditions become "more conducive for development" as the storm moves across the central and western Caribbean Sea.
There is a 10% chance it will develop in 48 hours, and a 40% chance it will develop in seven days.
Eastern Tropical Atlantic Ocean, over western Africa
The storm is expected to move off of Africa's coast on Monday, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Conditions could allow the storm to slowly develop throughout the week as it creeps westward or west-northwestward across the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean.
The odds of the storm developing are still low, with a near 0% chance it will develop in 48 hours and a 20% chance it will develop in seven days.
Forecasters tracking multiple tropical waves
The National Hurricane Center is also tracking three tropical waves:
-
A tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic was moving westward.
- A tropical wave in the central Atlantic was moving westward. Scattered moderate convection were noted.
A tropical wave in the western Caribbean and crossing into the Pacific was moving westward. The tropical wave extends across southeastern Mexico through El Salvador and into the eastern Pacific. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are present along the Pacific coast of Central America.

Five new restaurants to try in the Greater New Orleans area
by: Christian Olivier
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Greater New Orleans area is known for many unique cultural aspects, but perhaps the most noteworthy of them is the wide variety of food available to hungry inquirers from around the world.
For those who may be more accustomed to long-standing offerings, however, trying something new may very well be in order for an upcoming weekend out.
To help out prospective foodies, we’ve put together this list of five newly opened restaurants from across the culinary spectrum, hoping to offer something appealing to even the pickiest of eaters.
1. City Market
For a wide variety of foods and flavors, City Market at 1101 Elysian Fields Ave. in New Orleans is an ideal choice.
The market features six distinct eateries offering many items, including hamburgers, baked goods, sushi, bubble tea, Cajun staples and Vietnamese cuisine.
City Market may be a good option for groups of picky eaters, as the numerous options serve to provide something for everyone.
The establishment is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
2. Rascal Blues Chicken and Waffles
Rascal Blues, located at 1801 Rousseau St. in New Orleans, offers sweet and savory Southern foods for a comforting, at-home feeling.
The restaurant, which opened on Aug. 3, is of course known for their chicken and waffles, but also offers many soul-food staples such as greens, corn bread and mac and cheese.
Rascal Blues is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and may be the perfect choice for people looking for an indulgent meal in a family-centric, musical and culturally unique setting.
3. Tacos del Cartel
Back in April, Tacos del Cartel opened a fresh location in New Orleans at 1010 Girod St., and with renovations happening at their older Metairie location as well, now is the perfect time to check out this vibrant spot for street tacos and Tex-Mex cuisine.
The restaurant offers a wide variety of tacos for customers to choose from, including eight specialty options, such as their duck carnitas taco, and eight traditional options, such as the classic tacos de asada, which is made with flank steak.
Tacos Del Cartel also offers many sides, soups, desserts and larger meals for groups. The New Orleans location is open on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., on Tuesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
4. Sushi Takumi
This new Japanese restaurant, located only a block away from the Superdome at 703 Carondelet St. in the Central Business District of New Orleans, was started in part because the owner, Johnny Wang, noticed a lack of affordable sushi restaurants.
Sushi Takumi has also recently gained notoriety from its introduction of a “Taylor Swift Roll” ahead of the singer’s upcoming show in New Orleans.
A walk through Cajun and Creole origins and histories
The restaurant offers many, many varieties of sushi for customers to choose from, including classics like the California and Crunchy Rolls, and specialty rolls like the House Steak Roll, made with shrimp, snow crab and seared beef with avocado inside and scallions, BBQ eel sauce and spicy mayo on top.
Sushi Takumi is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday and from 11:30 a.m. 9:30 p.m. on Sunday. The restaurant is closed on Tuesday.
5. Savvy’s Sliders
Savvy Sliders, the fastest growing slider restaurant in the U.S., has opened a new location at 2565 Metairie Rd. in Metairie, bringing to this list a faster, more everyday kind of cuisine for the those who prefer to keep things simple.
One of Savvy’s main selling points is serving fresh, never frozen sliders in a variety of different configurations in order to meet anyone’s preference.
The fast-food joint offers simple staples on their sliders, such as angus beef, but also offer more unique options, such as the “Boomin’ Chicken” slider, made with fried chicken, pickles, lettuce and Savvy’s “Boom Sauce.”
For those less interested in sliders, the restaurant also features hand-breaded chicken fingers, fries, cheese curds, onion rings and well as nine different flavors of custard shakes.
Savvy’s Sliders is open from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday, and from 10:30 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

As recently reported by Fox 8, the Northshore of Greater New Orleans has become “a hotbed of transformation, experiencing unprecedented growth.”
Two recent announcements typify this growth, with legacy industries doubling down, and entrepreneurship bubbling up:
Chevron - Chevron Corporation, with its Gulf of Mexico headquarters in Covington, announced a technological breakthrough that will allow the company to start pumping oil from the Anchor oilfield, which operates in approximately mile-deep water 140 miles off the coast of Louisiana. Brent Gros, Vice President, Gulf of Mexico Business Unit at Chevron, said this advancement will help secure over 500 Chevron Northshore jobs. The technology developed by Chevron, together with oil services company Transocean and other partners, has made it possible to operate deepwater oil and gas extraction at higher pressure than previous limits. “First oil from Anchor is a major technological milestone in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, culminating from a decadelong effort from operators, service companies and regulators," Wood Mackenzie analyst Mfon Usoro wrote. You can read more about Chevron’s Anchor announcement here.
Palette - To help develop new technologies - and new entrepreneurs - Palette, a workspace & resource community, is opening its first location in St. Tammany at the end of 2024, in the office complex at 201 Holiday Boulevard in Covington. Palette was founded by Louisiana native Catherine Hover, who built two successful Palette locations in New York. Co-founders of Palette Northshore include former President and CEO of Stirling Properties Marty Mayer, estate advisor Bradley Cook and local entrepreneur Rory Gallardo. Palette Northshore’s physical space, designed by Greenleaf Architects, features multiple co-working spaces and private offices, event space, conference rooms, a podcast studio, outdoor workspace, and a connected café. Palette partners include St. Tammany Corporation, STartUP Northshore, Greater New Orleans Inc., The Idea Village, and Southeastern Louisiana University. You can read more about Palette, and join, here.
Additional recent Northshore good news includes:
-
Beier Integrated Systems unveiled an expansion plan, adding 15,000 square feet to their current facility in Slidell. This will allow the company to retain more than 30 existing jobs and create additional positions, with an average salary of $80,000
-
St. Tammany Corporation has been recognized with two 2024 Excellence in Economic Development Awards from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC):
- GOLD: NSpire Startup Slam Pitch Competition – Special Event
- BRONZE: St. Tammany Corporation – Economic Development Organization (EDO) of the Year

Heavy rains, flash flooding possible in New Orleans area after a dry Labor Day
After Labor Day’s dry weather, daily downpours are expected to return with flash flooding possible Wednesday morning, forecasters said.
The heaviest rains are expected Wednesday, which could dump as much as 4 inches of water, per hour, on parts of South Louisiana.
The New Orleans metro area is expected to see about 3-4 inches of rain between Wednesday through Friday, said Megan Williams, a local meteorologist with the National Weather Service, though that could end up being a low estimate.
“There definitely could be local higher amounts possible, each day, depending on where the storm is set up,” Williams said.
Forecasters are expecting scattered flash flooding from around 7 a.m. Wednesday through early Thursday morning.
Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Slidell are at a threat level of two out of four, indicating a “slight” chance of pooling waters in densely populated or low-lying areas, forecasts said.
“It’s more vulnerable,” Williams said about New Orleans, who noted the rainfalls are typical for this time of year. “The water doesn’t drain as quickly.”
The weather for Labor Day, while hot, was expected to be much better, with a minimal chance of rain. Temperatures are likely to be in the low-to-mid 90’s.

Book Launch: Nicholas Meyer - Sherlock Holmes and the Telegram From Hell, September 3, 6:00PM
Book Launch: Nicholas Meyer - Sherlock Holmes and the Telegram From Hell
In conversation with Christopher Tidmore.
June, 1916. With a world war raging on the continent, exhausted John H. Watson, M.D. is operating on the wounded full-time when his labors are interrupted by a knock on his door, revealing Sherlock Holmes, with a black eye, a missing tooth and a cracked rib. The story he has to tell will set in motion a series of world-changing events in the most consequential case of the detective's career.
Amid rebellion in Ireland and revolution in Russia, Germany has a secret plan to win the war and Sir William Melville of the British Secret Service dispatches the two aging friends to learn what the scheme is before it can be put into effect. In pursuit of a mysterious coded telegram sent from Berlin to an unknown recipient in Mexico, Holmes and Watson must cross the Atlantic, dodge German U-boats and assassination attempts, and evade the intrigues of young J. Edgar Hoover, while enlisting the help of a beautiful, eccentric Washington socialite as they seek to foil the schemes of Holmes's nemesis, the escaped German spymaster Von Bork.
Sherlock Holmes and the Telegram from Hell plunges Holmes into a world that eerily resembles our own, where entangling alliances, treaties, and human frailty threaten to create another cataclysm.

NATIONAL WELSH RAREBIT DAY | SEPTEMBER 3
On September 3rd, National Welsh Rarebit Day whips up a tasty and satisfying snack. What is a rarebit? The cheesy toast was originally called Rabbit in a tongue-in-cheek way in the Welsh language because there is no rabbit in the meal. Similar to mock turtle soup having no turtle in it, Welsh rarebit does not contain rabbit. Instead, this dish is made with toast that has hot cheese poured over it. Over time, the dish became known as Welsh Rarebit - a nod to the inside joke.
In the eighteenth century, Welsh Rarebit was served as a delicious supper. Taverns served it with ale. While fondue might come to mind, Welsh Rarebit more commonly uses wheat bread and cheddar cheese. A typical European fondue would start with Swiss cheeses. As with any dish, there are variations of Welsh Rarebit. Some of the recipes call for cayenne pepper, mustard, Worcestershire, or paprika.
Top the cheese with a poached egg, and the dish becomes a Golden Buck. Add bacon, and some call the meal a Yorkshire Buck. It also seems that humor goes well with Welsh Rarebit. Or at least it once did back when humor was tossed back and forth across the pond. In any case, the creamy, cheesy, and toasty dish deserves a taste and a smile, too.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

What a Difference a Year Makes...
Vintage variation in wine refers to the differences in the characteristics and quality of wines produced from the same vineyard or region in different years. These variations are primarily influenced by the weather and climate conditions experienced during a particular growing season, including factors such as temperature, rainfall, and sunshine. In years with ideal weather conditions, such as a balanced mix of sun and rain, grapes can ripen perfectly, leading to a vintage with well-structured, flavorful wines. Conversely, a growing season with too much rain, frost, or extreme heat can result in grapes that are under-ripe, overripe, or unevenly developed, leading to wines that may lack balance or complexity. Additionally, the timing of the harvest, influenced by weather patterns, can impact the final wine, as grapes picked too early or too late may not achieve their full potential. As a result, each vintage offers a unique snapshot of that year’s conditions, making wine an ever-changing, dynamic product where no two vintages are exactly alike.
Wine vintages are then rated by a combination of wine critics, publications, and organizations that assess the quality of wines produced in a specific year. These ratings are typically based on factors such as the weather conditions during the growing season, the quality of the grapes harvested, and the overall character and potential longevity of the wines produced.
In this tasting, we'll discuss these variations and how certain growing conditions affect wine, good or bad. We'll be tasting wines from selected, highly rated vintages in their respective regions around the world, and then ask you to rate the wine and see how your ratings correspond to the vintage rating. Join David Sobiesk for this fun, tasting and informative event! For more information and tickets, go to Vintage Variation

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 19
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

August Doussan (Freddie) has been learning from local legendary drummers like Johnny Vidacovich and Stanton Moore, from an early age. At age 8, he joined School of Rock Metairie/New Orleans and quickly rose to become a drummer for the prestigious School of Rock House Band. His musical journey has taken him across 38 states on tour with his guitarist dad. This is his JPA debut.
