Virtual Programming: Week 1
Greetings!

What does it mean to be a community of practice?

For Holden Village, it's about centering our day around the steady beat of our care for each other: dish team, garbology, bus departure, bus arrival, creating food, art, music, and honoring and celebrating sacred space daily in our life and work.

As you enjoy the glimpse here into Holden's community of practice, we invite you to think about your own communities, and how you will practice shared rhythms that help us all create communities of justice together.

Faithfully,
The Program Team
In this edition of Virtual Programming:

  • Video: Summer Theme
  • Video: Large Barge "Chaining"
  • Podcast: "Hellos and Goodbyes"
  • Art Show invitation!
Hear from our directors Stacy Kitahata, Mark Bach, and Kathie Bach as they discuss our summer theme!

As a community, we invite you to join us in examining what it means to encounter, embrace, and embark on the path forward: a journey that will change us just as it is changed by us.
In a community of practice, we carry each other... our joys, our sorrows, and our food boxes!

Every six months, the dry goods and supplies for the season are delivered via barge, and the whole community joins in to unload and chain hundreds of boxes.

This video captures the joy, teamwork, and interdependence of Villagers working together to make life together possible.
Listen to Villager Emer Kate Sanders reflect on the rhythm of hellos and goodbyes in the Village.

"There are so many people coming in and out of the Village. Hellos and goodbye are a way to acknowledge the time we have with this group of people as a community, be grateful, try to experience everything as fully as you can (without thinking of the end), be present, and then let go."

- Emer Kate Sanders
Accepting submissions to the Holden Art Show!
Reflecting on Ross Gay’s essay “Joy is Such a Human Madness,” we invite you to submit art pieces that engage with the question Ross Gay poses:

“What if we joined our wildernesses—our sorrows—together? What if that is joy?”

Consider your interior wilderness: your sorrows and your joys. How has the landscape of your personal wilderness shifted this past year? How does it change when joined with the wilderness of another, or within a communal context?

Submit your pieces, in all mediums, to crafts@holdenvillage.org, or bring them up to Holden Village on your visit this summer!

This will be an evolving show throughout the summer 2021 season. Read the full text of the essay here or an excerpt here.
