Weekly Updates | October 23, 2026

Happy Friday, District 5! With the rain earlier this week, the City continues to remind residents to stay prepared for inclement weather as we head into the 2026-2027 El Niño storm season. Our coastlines continue to be impacted by high tides associated with these weather events, and moderate to severe rainfall can bring flooding to other areas of the city. Find more information on storm preparedness below, as well as this week’s updates from Fire, Police, and more.

This week, we had the immense honor of officially opening a brand-new fire station, Fire Station 9, right here in the Fifth District! The return of our Station 9 crews from a temporary facility to a permanent home on Long Beach Blvd. represents years of hard work, planning, and investment in our community. Learn more in the info block below.

This weekend, celebrate arts, culture, and community in the Fifth District!

Next week, we hope to see you at the Expo Arts Center!

  • Thurs. Oct. 29: District 5 Community Meeting at 6pm, with guest speakers Senator Lena Gonzalez and Assemblymember Josh Lowenthal. Please RSVP to help us prepare seating!
  • Fri. Oct. 30: Community Blood Drive from 9am – 3pm, hosted in partnership with my office, Councilwoman Thrash-Ntuk’s office, and Jack & Jill Long Beach Chapter

Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. The full agenda and a list of items of interest will be included in a future newsletter.

As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.

Continuing the work,

Megan Kerr, Councilwoman

Long Beach, District 5

CITY NEWS

Long Beach Fire Department

Grand Opening of the New Fire Station 9!

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, I had the honor of joining the Long Beach Fire Department to celebrate the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting of the new Fire Station 9! This was a meaningful milestone for residents and businesses of the Fifth District, as we welcome the return of the Station 9 crews to Long Beach Blvd. and the heart of the neighborhoods they serve.

The opening of this station represents a significant investment in the health, safety, and wellbeing of our communities, for current and future generations. The technological improvements and modernization will help support our firefighters and first responders as they live, rest, gather, study, and prepare to respond to those in need. The direct access onto Long Beach Blvd., and the inclusion of a new traffic signal, will help support improved responses times and efficiency on calls for service. Additional improvements include upgraded sidewalks, utility infrastructure, and roadway work. Learn more in the recent press release.

While Station 9 most directly serves the surrounding neighborhoods of Los Cerritos, Bixby Knolls, and Cal Heights, we know that the emergency response system is a fluid one, and improvements in one area support the citywide system as a whole. I am grateful to the City teams who brought this project to fruition, and am proud to have been there to welcome Station 9 crews to their new home. I look forward to seeing this station serve our community for generations to come!
