Fifty years ago, on November 20, 1976, the Wells Public Library opened its doors to the community. What began with a collection of just 500 books has grown into a welcoming community gathering place filled with stories, learning, creativity, and connections. This November, the Wells Public Library invites everyone to join in celebrating its 50th anniversary with special activities and events throughout the month!
The library officially opened on November 20, 1976, following an organizational meeting held during the summer of that year at Cook’s Table. Its first home was in the basement of City Hall before moving to its current location in 1990. Over the past five decades, the library has continued to grow and change while remaining an important part of the Wells community.
To celebrate this special milestone, the library has planned a month full of activities for children, adults, families, and anyone who enjoys spending time at the library.
Throughout November, visitors can try their luck with a page-guessing jar and take part in an adult scavenger hunt. The library will also be gathering memories from community members, inviting everyone to share their favorite library memories and what the library has meant to them over the years. To celebrate its history, the library’s scrapbooks will be on display, giving visitors a chance to look back at photographs, events, and memories from the past five decades. Whether you have been visiting since the library first opened or are a newer patron, everyone has a story to share!
