5Essentials Parent Survey

Dear Hinsdale South Parents and Guardians,
We Need Your Feedback.

Parents across Illinois once again have an opportunity to participate in the annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of your child’s school as it relates to the important elements of school effectiveness.

On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by the University of Chicago. All survey responses will be kept confidential. The state will provide survey results for individual schools only if a school has at least 20 percent of parents take the survey. If you have children attending more than one school, we ask that you complete the survey for each school.

To take this short survey:

  1. Visit 5 Essentials Survey Link
  2. Type and select “Dupage” as "County." (The county is the location of the school district's main office.)
  3. Type your school's name into the "School" field and select your school.

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey identifies five indicators that can lead to important student outcomes, including test score gains. Research has shown that schools strong on these indicators are ten times more likely to improve student learning. The five indicators that effect school success are effective leaders, collaborative teachers, involved families, supportive environments, and ambitious instruction.

Parents will have until March 31, 2023 to participate in the survey.

For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or to view previous years’ Reports, please visit https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact 5Essentials Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or impact-surveys@uchicago.edu.

Physical Education Department
The Physical Education Department provides curriculum to our students that covers competencies in health and wellness in the areas of physical, mental/emotional and social health and safety. The content areas under our department are physical education, health education and driver education. Our mission and vision in all three of these content areas are to provide students the opportunity to learn and engage in activity that enhances their overall well-being.

Physical Education classes this semester have provided activity in team game play, fitness
training theories and outdoor education. A high-light moment for some of our students this
semester have been a field trip to The Forge Adventure Park in Lemont and a kayaking trip at
Starved Rock. Our freshmen physical education classes continue to provide safe and supportive
spaces for students to learn about Social Emotional Learning (SEL) through evidence-based
programs so they may build respectful relationships with peers, faculty and the school
community.

Health Education classes this semester have covered age appropriate and research based
content in the areas of wellness, nutrition, body systems, legal and illegal substances and human sexuality. Our team has also brought in community and county speakers and presenters to provide additional learning opportunities and support to our students in the areas of healthy
relationships, impact of addition and a youth outlook program supporting LGBTQ+.

Driver Education classes this semester have continued to provide our students with the
necessary knowledge and skills to be safe and responsible drivers. Additionally, our staff have
brought in personnel from the Secretary of State’s Office to speak on distracted driving as well
as state railroad organizations to support road and pedestrian safety.
Science Department
Science has had a whirlwind fall semester, full of rigorous academics and engaging explorations. If you were to have walked down our hallways this fall, you would have seen students experiencing and investigating science both inside and outside of our classroom walls.

A few highlights include:
  • Our freshman physics students in the hallway exploring concepts of waves with slinkies for later application in light, the structure of our Universe, and Earth processes
  • Our sophomore chemistry students in the lab burning different elements to learn about electron excitability to later apply to photosynthesis and the life cycle of stars
  • Our junior biology students exploring fossils from local and global sources to better understand biogeography, comparative anatomy, and macroevolution
  • Our Anatomy & Physiology students dissected many things, including sheep brains as part of their neurology unit, and also had Dr. Dean Godellas, a surgeon at Alexian Brothers Hospital, visit with students and share his journey to becoming a surgeon
  • Our APES students visited the Sagawau Environmental Learning Center in Lemont to learn about the local prairie as well as restore the ecosystem through the removal of invasive species
Social Studies
We have had a couple of very exciting Service Learning projects in our civics classes this semester! One of our civics classes conducted a school supply drive and fundraiser in order to support Florida students impacted by Hurricane Ian. The drive resulted in shipping 36 boxes of school supplies to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Our students were able to provide a bag of supplies to over 400 students in need. Thank you to all who donated school supplies and a special thanks to Grand Subaru of Bensenville and Chicagoland Fireplace and Restoration for their generous donations!
Another civic class introduced Career Week to Hinsdale South this year. The students arranged for professionals from many fields to come in as guest speakers in classes across the building. We had the mayor of Darien come into our civics classes, an actuary come into our math courses, and a surgeon come into anatomy and physiology, just to name a few. Thank you to all of the professionals who volunteered their time, and to our teachers who opened their classrooms to this experience.
