The Wired Word: Faith & the Headlines

We’re back by request! How does Scripture speak to today’s news? The Wired Word is a weekly Bible study that connects current events with biblical insight, helping participants reflect on the headlines through the lens of Christian faith. Each lesson includes a brief news summary, key Scripture passages, thoughtful discussion questions, and a closing prayer. Designed for lively conversation and reflection, this class invites participants to explore how the Bible speaks to the complex issues shaping our world today.

The Psalms: Expressing our Hearts

Growing with God we realize that we are not just reading His Word but His Word begins to read us, to animate our lives, and shape our perception of our experiences. In this class we will examine the Psalms, both particular selections and overarching general themes. Following a model offered by noted theologian Walter Bruggemann, we will discuss how the Psalms portray movements in our lives from orientation, to disorientation, to reorientation. This movement in our lives, which parallels the structure of the Psalms, is often through pain which takes us by surprise and is often resisted—the Psalms of lament. But then the movement to new orientation is a new gift of God, a coherence made present to us though His intervention—Psalms of thanksgiving and declaration. We will talk about what they reveal about God, about us, about how we feel, and about how God feels about us. We will look at ways of incorporating the Psalms in our lives and in our prayers.

Art & Faith: Make Something Beautiful

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3 | 9:30am | SESSION ROOM

There is something deeply satisfying about creating with our hands—loop by loop, stitch by stitch. This special Art & Faith Saturday invites you into the creative world of knitting and crocheting alongside Tab members whose shawl ministry offers handmade gifts of comfort and care to new moms. During this beginner-friendly morning, you will learn a few basics of fiber art, enjoy the fellowship of others, and leave with a charming three-dimensional owl or bird of your own. No experience is necessary—just a willingness to try, create, and spend a morning discovering how art, patience, and generosity can be woven together.

Raphael Health Center

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4 | 9am | PRESENTED BY TAB’S MISSIONS COMMITTEE

Please join us to hear from Sherry Gray, Chief Executive Officer of the Raphael Health Center located across the street from Tab. Tab is a founding partner for the Center since 1994 when Tab members, responding to a community need for health care, began utilizing health professionals to provide medical care to Mapleton Fall Creek and beyond. Today Raphael is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) receiving government grants and is recognized as a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) meaning that patients can have all of their healthcare needs met in one location. Sherry will describe the current scope of Raphael’s services and will give updates on how some of the donations from Tab have helped them purchase an eye examination machine which is giving people new opportunities for improved sight and improved lives. Please join us to hear about these life-enriching ministries.

Parent's Night Out

All Tab families are invited to bring their infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary students to Tab on Friday, October 16 for Parents Night Out. While parents hit the town (or maybe just take a nap!) we'll have crafts, games, a movie (with popcorn, of course), and make our own healthy snack with the elementary students, and we'll have a separate childcare room for the 4-and-under crowd.

There's no fee for the event and reservations aren't required, but we DO ask that you feed your child dinner before arriving.

If you have questions, please contact Jennifer Wirt.

Facilities Update

The 2026 Budget is $2.5 million, of which a little over half ($1.3 million) is for staffing. But the second biggest line item is for Facilities at $545,000. This includes various costs such as insurance ($80,000); utilities ($110,000); various contract and maintenance costs ($90,000 each); janitorial and maintenance supplies ($20,000); and expenses to maintain the grounds ($58,000). It's a big building and a large property and our staff work hard to stay within these means while doing their best to keep the place looking ship-shape. We also have a little under $100,000 (a generous stipend from Endowment) to cover miscellaneous small-capital projects. To date, well, we're pushing up against this limit with three months to go. But we've focused on various mechanical and electrical upgrades (replacement of asbestos pipe insulation; replacement motors; a new secondary water pump; a new radiator in the tower room; a new damper for our largest air-handling unit; an emergency replacement of the A/C unit serving the business offices (during a major heat wave); and other odds and ends which will never get noticed but are important to the efficient running of the building systems. The more noticeable improvements include some major plaster repair and repainting of the choir storage rooms, the refreshing of the big room in Lower Level B, and replacement of door hardware at three double-door exit locations. These have been covered by the operating budget. But we've also been working on projects funded separately by Endowment and/or the Session fund, such as: a refreshed pastor's office, ongoing replacement of all the domestic water pipes in the building, as well as a total repainting of the main sanctuary and narthex. Now that was a job. And did anyone notice that we repainted the entire blue wall in the choir loft, including repainting the gold-painted decals late last year? God has gifted this congregation with an amazing facility which enables our various ministries and outreach, and we're doing our best to be good stewards of the funds allocated for facility maintenance and upkeep.
