Our History, Mission & Future

We have been serving the Down syndrome community for over 17 years. What started out as a friendly dinner gathering at a parent’s home in 2006, lead us to opening the 1st Down syndrome medical center in Southern California, with our partners at Rady Children’s Hospital in January 2008. The Down Syndrome Center has cared for over 2200 patients since it was established. DS Action continues to have a fundraising goal of at least $65,000 annually to supplement the costs that insurance does not cover.

DS Action focuses on the overall health and wellbeing of people with Down syndrome and their families. We are grateful for our community partners and many generous Donors, who have believed in our vision and provided the support necessary to carry out our mission.

Over the years, we have listened to the needs of our community and continue to take action, inspire change and create solutions. One of those solutions was providing a virtual parent/caregiver support group at the start of the pandemic. This group continues today and offers a platform for parents, from various states, to share information, tips, struggles and joys.

We have enjoyed the joy and friendships that have come from the many events that have been hosted on our behalf and those we have planned.  Some of those beloved events have included: A Ride of Inspiration, Comedy Ball, BJ’s Restaurant breakfasts/dinners, Point Loma Nazarene University Easter Egg Hunt, Climbing to New Heights for Down Syndrome, San Diego Padres games, San Diego Gulls Night Out, Star Wars movie events, Dr. Reinbolt’s Ultra Marathon Fundraisers, Virtual New Years Parties, DS Action’s Charity Golf Classic and many more.

In 2024, we look forward to continue serving our community with fun social opportunities, events to raise awareness and funds, along with providing information and resources.

Please help us to continue the work that we do by joining us for #GivingTuesday!

Why Support DS Action?

By extending your generosity on this special day, you can make a profound impact on the lives of families navigating the challenges of raising a child with Down Syndrome.

Here is one family's testimony:

"My family has benefited greatly from being able to access the specialized care at the Down Syndrome Medical Center. At the Center, in a single appointment, families can be seen by many specialists and have many concerns and needs addressed and receive the information to start on their way to treatment, growth and healing. Also the parent support meeting, has provided me with a community who understands what I am going through and shares so much, tested in the real world, knowledge. It is so important to learn from those families that have older children and to be able to contribute by sharing with the young ones." -- Carla, mother of Michael
