NYECA Safety Topic of the Month- Reducing Work Zone Hazards Through Awareness and Prevention

Good Afternoon,

April’s NYECA Safety Resource focuses on protecting workers and the public by reducing hazards in and around construction work zones. Electrical contractors regularly operate in streets, sidewalks, occupied buildings, transportation systems, and active job sites where changing conditions can create serious risks. Awareness, planning, and prevention are critical to keeping everyone safe.

Key Work Zone Hazards

  • Moving vehicles and equipment
  • Distracted drivers or pedestrians
  • Poor housekeeping and trip hazards
  • Inadequate barricades or signage
  • Limited visibility / nighttime operations
  • Struck-by incidents from tools or materials
  • Improper access routes for workers and deliveries

Plan Before Work Begins

  • Review site logistics, deliveries, traffic flow, and pedestrian access
  • Conduct a pre-task hazard analysis daily
  • Coordinate with GC, owner, and other trades

Control the Work Zone

  • Use cones, barriers, fencing, and warning signage
  • Clearly separate workers from traffic and public access
  • Maintain clean walkways and emergency exits

Increase Visibility

  • Wear high-visibility PPE
  • Use lighting for early morning, night, or low-light conditions
  • Assign spotters when backing vehicles or moving equipment

Stay Alert

  • Eliminate distractions such as phones in active zones
  • Watch for changing site conditions throughout the shift
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions

Toolbox Talk Topics

  • Struck-by prevention
  • Traffic and pedestrian control
  • Ladder/material placement in walkways
  • Housekeeping in tight work areas
  • Communication between trades
