I can't believe it's been ten years since I opened the bookstore. Time flies and crawls all at the same time! Thank you for all your support and for the many, many books you have purchased over these ten years -- I couldn't have done it without all of you! A special thank you to my husband Mark and my children for all the help they have given me (and still do, ha ha, stuck with me!) and to many friends, including Laura, who helped me so much along the way.

I hope you can stop by, I'd love to see you!

Pam is a wonderful Virginia author and I loved this book! She is a great speaker and the history components of this historical fiction story are fascinating. This is the first of a new series where we meet Kit, a young agent with the newly created OSS, on an undercover assignment investigating a conspiracy by Nazi sympathizers in Northern Africa in 1942.

Please come out and support your local bookstore and a great Virginia author!

In the waning days of the antebellum South, millions of African Americans were suddenly released from enslavement. But they soon realized that "freedom" was not free; they were subject to hundreds of laws aimed at preventing them from voting and, in many cases, learning. Were it not for the work of an exceptional group of women--activists, educators, mothers, organizers--the foundations for Black education might never have been laid. From bestselling author Celeste Headlee, an urgent and eye-opening story of the women who risked everything to ensure a generation of Black Americans had the right to read. (publisher mkting)

A stirring contribution to America's historical narrative."--Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Poetry

Losing a child is one of the most unreconcilable griefs. In Cloud Runner, Joy Harjo reckons with the unspeakable pain of losing her daughter: “Reason has no home in this hour,” she writes. Despite a devasting loss, Harjo constructs a shrine to human resilience, reminding us that the most profound revelations can appear in our darkest hours: “I now know why we construct ceremonial epics of mystery and beauty, / Of enemy and failure: it is so we can pick up our burdens / And go on.” (publisher mkting)

Nonfiction

Maria Edgeworth, known to her contemporaries as “the Great Maria,” was one of the most important authors of the Regency era, envied by Lord Byron, admired by Jane Austen, and read avidly by the British royalty. But she was more than just a novelist and a society fixture: She was also a covert economist, working just after Adam Smith and alongside her friends David Ricardo and Thomas Malthus. As the earliest economists established their philosophies on production and investment, Edgeworth published dozens of stories, many with lessons on finance, society, and trade tucked into their plots. Through her fiction, Edgeworth delivered new ideas to a broader public, stretching the boundaries of what a woman of her time could achieve and captivating an empire in the process. (publisher mkting)

“Smialek, with the analytical rigor and narrative drive that made her one of the finest economics journalists of her generation, has rescued Maria Edgeworth from a historical amnesia that was, as this book makes clear, far from accidental.” —Janet Yellen, Former Chair of the Federal Reserve and United States Secretary of the Treasury
