SmartCentres unveils plans for ArtWalk, a mixed-use art district in Vaughan
Phase one of SmartCentres Artwalk development in Vaughan includes three residential buildings located near transit, urban amenities and a nine-acre central park and a nine-acre central park.
The ArtWalk district, which was unveiled earlier last summer with a collection of accessible, experiential art and culture activations, will grow to include an entire block of new, mixed-use developments, developed by SmartLiving, SmartCentres’ wholly owned in-house residential development brand.

WorldGBC addresses embodied emissions in new update
The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) updated its Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment (the Commitment) to include embodied carbon and other requirements for addressing embodied emissions.
To accompany the Commitment update, WorldGBC has also published Advancing Net Zero Whole Life Carbon: Offsetting Residual Emissions from the Building and Construction Sector, providing guidance for how the sector should compensate for its total carbon impacts.

Comprehensive coverage of CanaData 2021: Building in a post-pandemic world
Last week, ConstructConnect hosted the 37th annual CanaData conference, with the theme of Accelerate your Agility: Building in a Post-Pandemic World. The two-day virtual event featured forecasts and projections for the construction industry and what they mean as the world emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic. Economic trends, changing demographics, labour shortages, supply chain disruptions, material costing issues and deglobalization were all highlighted with various speakers lending their expertise to the topics.

TradeWorx to create opportunities for homeless youth to enter skilled trades
In an effort to combat youth homelessness, the Home Depot Canada Foundation recently launched TradeWorx, a program designed to create opportunities for career education and skilled trades training. Thanks to an initial $1 million investment from the foundation, 100 Canadian youth who have experienced homelessness or barriers to employment will receive the training and social supports necessary to work in the trades.

PCL named construction manager for Grand Central Mimico
Vandyk Properties has announced that PCL Construction will serve as the construction manager of record for its Grand Central Mimico project in Toronto.
Grand Central Mimico will feature two million square feet of mixed-use development valued at over $2.5 billion in new assets once complete. The project is a result of the first binding transit-oriented development agreement signed between Metrolinx and a developer, stated a recent release.
