Moot Court Interest Meeting
Students interested in participating should attend an informational meeting on Wednesday, January 14, 2:45-3:15 PM in Ms. Fort’s classroom. Please see or email Ms. Fort if you are interested in participating but are not able to attend. No prior experience is required.
Students - Do you want to play the role of attorney making an oral argument to the US Supreme Court? Teams of two perform the role of attorney making an oral argument for an issue (materials provided, no research allowed), for petitioner in one round and for respondent in a second round. The issues to be addressed are: (1) is a college professor’s classroom speech excluded from the protection of the First Amendment as “official duty” speech, or is there an “academic freedom” exception to that rule, and (2) does the First Amendment limit a public college’s ability to dictate the message that an instructor must convey while in the classroom. We practice Wednesdays right after school beginning January 21, with the regional competition in Cary, NC on Saturday, March 21. The top 2 teams compete in the NC Supreme Court on Friday, May 1.
Parents - We need real-life attorneys to serve as justices for practice rounds of oral arguments. If you can help out at one or more practices, please email Coach Janet Fort
