Hello!
I've been reading The Good Son, Jacquelyn Mitchard's newest book released yesterday. Tonight we are hosting her with our friends from Bowell Books in Milwaukee. She will be in conversation with Karen Dionne.
The book digs deep into the emotional turmoil of a community and specifically the family whose son has been released from prison after serving time for involuntary manslaughter. Set in the area around and north of Madison, the story is riveting. It is hard to put down, not so much for the fast pace, but for the characters. It leaves you thinking and rethinking what it means to forgive, how we seek and grant redemption, and how we choose to see a story.
I hope you can join us for the conversation tonight and pick-up a signed copy of The Good Son to read this weekend! You'll want to have it read before next week when we talk with Jonathan Evison for January's Readings from Oconomowaukee and the following night host Kathie Giorgio in conversation with Jim Higgins. The pressure is on!

Cheers and Happy Reading!

Bookish high school student Rintaro Natsuki is about to close the secondhand bookstore he inherited from his beloved bookworm grandfather. Then, a talking cat appears with an unusual request. The feline asks for—or rather, demands—the teenager’s help in saving books with him. The world is full of lonely books left unread and unloved, and the cat and Rintaro must liberate them from their neglectful owners. Bookseller Katrina says "I adored this novel! It is charming and full of love for books, reading, and bookshops."
by Hanya Yanagihara

In an alternate version of 1893 America, New York is part of the Free States, where people may live and love whomever they please (or so it seems). In a 1993 Manhattan besieged by the AIDS epidemic, a young Hawaiian man lives with his much older, wealthier partner, hiding his troubled childhood and the fate of his father. And in 2093, in a world riven by plagues and governed by totalitarian rule, a powerful scientist’s damaged granddaughter tries to navigate life without him—and solve the mystery of her husband’s disappearances.

Bookseller Toni says "It was a dark and stormy night... When a child is found in the snow outside an isolated farm house; Wylie Lark's past comes back to haunt her. In the farmhouse Wylie is staying in there was a double murder years ago as well as a child gone missing. The story unfolds over the night and will have you reeling. I dare you to put this one down before you have read it all! Gudenkauf is one of the best authors in the thriller genre right now. I have read every one of her books and have not be disappointed once."

From the earliest days of civilization, alcohol has been at the center of social rituals and cultures worldwide. But when exactly did drinking become a gendered act? And why have bars long been considered "places for men" when, without women, they might not even exist? Bookseller Genavieve says "What a delightfully decadent world history, following our love of booze from the dawn of civilization to modern times. Drinking culture and the women who were it's driving force even while being marginalized from it are a facinating focal point."
by Leonard Mlodinow

We’ve all been told that thinking rationally is the key to success. But at the cutting edge of science, researchers are discovering that feeling is every bit as important as thinking. Using deep insights into our evolution and biology, Mlodinow gives us the tools to understand our emotions better and to maximize their benefits. Told with his characteristic clarity and fascinating stories, Emotional explores the new science of feelings and offers us an essential guide to making the most of one of nature’s greatest gifts.
by Carl Bernstein

In 1960, Bernstein was just a sixteen-year-old at considerable risk of failing to graduate high school. Inquisitive, self-taught—and, yes, truant—Bernstein landed a job as a copyboy at the Evening Star, the afternoon paper in Washington. By nineteen, he was a reporter there. Funny and exhilarating, poignant and frank, Chasing History is an extraordinary memoir of life on the cusp of adulthood for a determined young man with a dogged commitment to the truth.

With deep insight, warmth, and an irreverent sense of humor, Syed M. Masood examines universal questions of identity, faith (or lack thereof), and belonging through the lens of Muslim Americans. Booksellers Lynn, Katrina, and Judy all loved this novel! Judy says "Religion - Politics - Family. The trifecta of taboo topics...but sooo interesting & fun. Fast reading and culture rich. I learned so much. Perfect when you want to gain an appreciation of America's NEW immigrant story."

by Annalee Newitz

Acclaimed science journalist Annalee Newitz takes readers on an entertaining and mind-bending adventure into the deep history of urban life. Investigating across the centuries and around the world, Newitz explores the rise and fall of four ancient cities, each the center of a sophisticated civilization: the Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük in Central Turkey, the Roman vacation town of Pompeii on Italy’s southern coast, the medieval megacity of Angkor in Cambodia, and the indigenous metropolis Cahokia, which stood beside the Mississippi River where East St. Louis is today.
by Quiara Alegria Hudes

The Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright and co-writer of In the Heights tells her lyrical story of coming of age against the backdrop of an ailing Philadelphia barrio, with her sprawling Puerto Rican family as a collective muse. Weaving together Hudes’s love of music with the songs of her family, the lessons of North Philly with those of Yale, this is a multimythic dive into home, memory, and belonging—narrated by an obsessed girl who fought to become an artist so she could capture the world she loved in all its wild and delicate beauty.
by Charlie Gilmour

This is a story of two men who could talk to birds—but were completely incapable of talking to each other. A father who fled from his family in the dead of night, and the jackdaw he raised like a child. A son obsessed with his absence—and the young magpie that fell into his path and refused to fly away. This is a story about the crow family and human family; about repetition across generations and birds that run in the blood; about a terror of repeating the sins of the father and a desire to build a nest of one’s own.
