Dyslexia Experts Available for Speaking Engagements

The Speaker Showcase is OPEN for bidding!
Each year (excluding 2020 because of COVID) the IDA Branch Council conducts a silent auction of dyslexia experts who are donating their time as a fundraiser. Organizations bid for speakers to attend and speak at their conferences or community events. This year we're excited to showcase over 60 exceptional professionals. We encourage you to share this information ASAP with your local independent and public schools, as well as universities and partner organizations. Bidding is open to anyone interested in procuring a high-quality speaker in the field of dyslexia for their future event. You can even book someone for 2023!
Bidding will close at 10 p.m. EST Wednesday, Nov. 10.

#DyslexiaDash2021 #Success
|
|
It's been 15 years since the first Dyslexia Dash. In 2006, then IDA Georgia President Jennifer Hasser dreamed up the Dyslexia Dash as a way for the International Dyslexia Association GA to raise funds for teacher training opportunities. We had almost 200 runners that year.
Fast Forward to 2021:
2021 was the first year the Dyslexia Dash was both an in-person race and a virtual race. We had a record 2,409 runners with 1,718 being in-person and 691 running virtually. We had 258 virtual racers from outside of Georgia representing 27 other states. We had a record 37 sponsors. We received a record $20,700 of donations of which $4,600 were from out-of-state and one from Canada.
Thank you, everyone. Because of the collective determination to make the 2021 event a success, we were able to increase dyslexia awareness, build community, and raise funds for outreach initiatives and scholarships and grants for Georgia teachers seeking training in Structured Literacy, the kind of instruction our kiddos with dyslexia need. The other IDA Branches who joined the Dash virtually we also able to raise needed funds for their Branches.

Dyslexia Rocks - KEEP IT GOING!
|
|
Dyslexia Rocks! We had fun painting rocks at this year’s Dyslexia Dash in Atlanta, Georgia!
Children at the Dash painted and then left rocks in spots around the Dash area at the Perimeter Mall or took their creations with them to find a special spot in another area. One artist sent a picture of herself leaving her rock later that day by the Chattahoochee River.
IDA Oregon’s Student Empowerment Group is encouraging everyone to decorate a rock with #DyslexiaYouAreNotAlone written on it. Send a photo of your painted rock to studentcouncil@orbida.org. Be sure to mention your city and state. Leave your rock in the perfect spot for someone to discover it. Check out #DyslexiaYouAreNotAlone on Instagram to see some awesome creations!

8 1/2 minutes. Watch. Listen. Absorb.
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. Share this video and encourage others to "Watch. Listen. Absorb."
Those who have had training in understanding the science of reading and how to implement best practices through Structured Literacy instruction have the POWER TO CHANGE lives. Too many young readers do not get the help they need. We can change this.
"My years of passion and advocacy for literacy have great meaning to me. After all these years, I still can't stop advocating and working to change things so other little boys and little girls don't suffer unnecessarily like I did." - John Corcoran, 2021

What Kind of Literacy Instruction Works?
|
|
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. What kind of teaching works?
"Evidence is strong that the majority of students learn to read better with structured teaching of basic language skills and that the components and methods of Structured Literacy are critical for students with reading disabilities including dyslexia."

#Spread the Words, #Spread the Love
|
|
We at IDA-GA are thankful to this family for sharing their story with IDA about learning of their daughter’s dyslexia diagnosis and their journey to finding resources. They want to help others in the dyslexia community. We appreciate their eagerness to raise awareness and “Spread the Love” this month (and beyond). Check out the webpage they created dedicated to providing information about dyslexia https://lekkco4charity.com/dyslexiaawareness and encouraging the #WordsForDyslexia campaign. If you decide to purchase the Lekkco chocolate spread (think holiday gifts!), they are designating a big portion of the proceeds to go to IDA. You can help out our GA Branch by choosing Read-GA when you check out.
