Greetings!

Welcome to the July 2026 Collector Car Journal featuring highlights from recent automotive activities and a look ahead at notable events and milestones across the collector car world.

Every August the collector car world reaches its annual crescendo. On one weekend alone, enthusiasts can choose between two of the world's most celebrated automotive gatherings, each separated by over two thousand miles yet united by a common passion for the automobile.

In Detroit, more than a million spectators gather along historic Woodward Avenue for the Woodward Dream Cruise, celebrating America's enduring love affair with the automobile.

Woodward Dream Cruise, born from a 1950s cruising culture along Detroit’s legendary Woodward Avenue, was officially launched in August 1995 as a one-time Ferndale, Michigan fundraiser. Organizers expected 25,000 attendees, but over 250,000 showed up. Today, it is the world’s largest one-day automotive event, spanning 16 miles between the cities of Ferndale and Pontiac and attracting tens of thousands of classic cars.

Meanwhile, on California's Monterey Peninsula, collectors, restorers, manufacturers, designers and enthusiasts from around the world gather for what has become the most influential week on the international collector car calendar.

This year carries even greater significance as the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance celebrates its 75th Anniversary. What began in 1950 as a small gathering associated with the inaugural Pebble Beach Road Races has grown into the world's most prestigious concours, inspiring an entire week of automotive events that now includes major auctions, historic racing, luxury lifestyle experiences and gatherings for virtually every segment of the collector car hobby.

Like many, I always look forward to Monterey each August. Having been fortunate to work behind the scenes at Pebble Beach for many years, it remains fascinating to watch how the event continues to evolve while never losing sight of the history that made it so special.

This month's Journal looks back at several defining moments in Pebble Beach history while also highlighting recent travels, museum visits and developments from around the collector car world.

Every great event has defining moments - those occasions that elevate it from being important to becoming legendary. For the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, one of those moments unquestionably occurred in 1985.

Known simply as "The Summit," the Concours accomplished what many believed would never be possible: assembling all six surviving Bugatti Type 41 Royales for the first - and still only - time in history.

Produced between 1927 and 1933, only six Bugatti Royales were completed. Each followed its own remarkable journey across continents, collections and museums before finally being reunited in 1985 on the 18th fairway at Pebble Beach.

The achievement was the result of extraordinary efforts by Concours Co-Chairmen Lorin Tryon and Jules "J." Heumann, whose persistence convinced owners around the world to bring these priceless automobiles together for one

unforgettable occasion. For many historians, this gathering marked the point at which Pebble Beach transitioned from America's premier concours into the world's premier concours.

Six Automobiles. Six Remarkable Stories.

Rather than retelling every detail of each car's history, what continues to fascinate me is how differently each Royale survived.

  • One remained with the Bugatti family for decades.
  • Another crossed Europe before joining William Harrah's legendary collection.
  • One narrowly escaped destruction after being abandoned in a New York wrecking yard before being discovered by General Motors executive Charles Chayne.
  • Another eventually returned to France after decades in American collections.

Each Royale followed its own extraordinary path before history reunited them in 1985 on the Pebble Beach show field.

Bugatti Royale Coupe Napoleon (#41100) right

The original prototype evolved through several different bodies before Ettore Bugatti's son Jean created the magnificent Coupe Napoleon that has become one of the most recognizable automobiles ever built.

Bugatti Royale Coupe de Ville (#41111) left

Commissioned for wealthy Parisian Armand Esders, who never drove after dark and therefore ordered it without headlights, this Royale later received its elegant Coupe de Ville coachwork by Henri Binder and would later be a part William Harrah's collection.

Bugatti Royale Weinberger Cabriolet (#41121) right

Perhaps the closest any Royale came to disappearing forever, it survived abandonment in a New York salvage yard before being rescued by Charles Chayne, Vice President of General Motors who would donate it to The Henry Ford Museum.

Bugatti Royale Berline de Voyage (#41150) left

Remaining with the Bugatti family until 1950, it later passed through several distinguished American collections including Briggs Cunningham and the Harrah's Collection, before being on display at the Blackhawk Museum for many years.

Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe (#41141) left

Originally Ettore Bugatti's personal automobile, it famously lacked both a speedometer and fuel gauge before eventually joining Briggs Cunningham's renowned collection.

Bugatti Royale Limousine (#41131) right

Built for Captain Cuthbert Foster with formal Park Ward coachwork, the Limousine ultimately returned to France after decades in private American ownership.

A Century Later...

Just weeks ago, Bugatti enthusiasts gathered once again - this time at the Musée National de l'Automobile – Collection Schlumpf in Mulhouse, France - for the inaugural Concours d'Élégance International Schlumpf.

Held to commemorate the centenary of the Bugatti Royale, the event reunited several of these legendary automobiles while celebrating Bugatti across multiple generations. Although not all six original Royales could be assembled as they were in 1985, the gathering served as a reminder of just how extraordinary that Pebble Beach achievement remains.

The Bugatti Coupé Napoléon, the Bugatti Park Ward, and the recreation of the Bugatti Esders, gathered at the Concours d'Élégance International Schlumpf

to celebrate the centenary of the Bugatti Royale.

One Ferrari That Changed Everything

One of the most anticipated offerings during this year's Gooding Christie's Pebble Beach Auction will be the remarkable 1963 Ferrari 250 P, raced by Lorenzo Bandini and John Surtees among others. Its appearance this August brings back memories of another Monterey auction nearly four decades ago - one that helped reshape the collector car market.

In 1988, this same Ferrari became one of the headline attractions at the Third Annual Rick Cole Monterey Auction, sharing center stage with another legendary automobile, General Motors' experimental CERV II. Only days before the auction, General Motors obtained a restraining order claiming ownership of the CERV II, forcing its withdrawal from the sale. Then, just five days before the auction opened, Enzo Ferrari passed away at the age of ninety. Those events unexpectedly focused worldwide attention on the Ferrari 250 P.

I still remember the atmosphere inside the auction tent. The crowd packed so tightly around the rotating display platform that many bidders—and even the auctioneer—could barely see one another. When the hammer finally fell at $2.75 million, the applause was thunderous.

Looking back today, it is easy to see that we were witnessing far more than the sale of an important racing Ferrari. That moment helped ignite the extraordinary growth of the collector car auction market and firmly established Monterey as one of the world's premier destinations for automotive collectors.

Only two automobiles had ever sold for more at auction at that time — the Bugatti Kellner Coach Royale for £5,500,000 ($9,867,000) sold by Christie’s in London in 1987, and the Bugatti Royale Berline de Voyage sold at the Harrah’s Auction in 1986 for $6.5M. The previous highest prices Ferraris had sold at auction was a 250SWB Competition for £942K in 1988, and a 300GTO for

£940K in 1987.

Today those figures seem almost modest, but in 1988 they represented a defining milestone in collector car history.

The following year, Rick Cole expanded the Monterey auction to two days, reflecting the explosive interest that had developed almost overnight.

By the end of 1989, London based Christie's auction house had reached an agreement with the Pebble Beach Company to conduct an official auction during Concours week, laying the foundation for what has since become one of the most significant auction weeks anywhere in the world.

Looking back nearly forty years later, few could have imagined just how influential the ‘Pebble Beach & Monterey Car Weekend’ would become.

The 1989 Pebble Beach Concours would offer its own moment of history with the three Alfa Romeo Berlina Aerodinamica Tecnica (BAT) cars. Commissioned by Alfa Romeo in the 1950s, the futuristic, aerodynamic vehicles were brought to life through the legendary Italian design house and coachbuilder Carrozzeria Bertone led by Giuseppe "Nuccio" Bertone.

Created in 1953, 1954 and 1955 respectively, BAT 3, BAT 5, and BAT 7 were first gathered together at the 1989 Pebble Beach Concours along with Nuccio Bertone, who saw a rare glimpse of all three of his creations together for the first time.

Featured on this year’s Concours poster the Alfa Romeo BAT trio of automotive design masterpieces will return to Pebble Beach for the 75th Anniversary.

Around the Automotive World

Milwaukee – Celebrating Harry Miller's Legacy

The 'Millers at Milwaukee' event returned to the Milwaukee Mile, one of America's oldest and most historic race tracks. Following several years of improvements — including the construction of a new 40,000-seat grandstand—the facility is once again hosting IndyCar competition alongside a full schedule of racing events.

The annual Millers at Milwaukee gathering is one of the country's premier celebrations of Harry A. Miller, whose engineering brilliance transformed American motorsport during the 1920s. Founded in 1995 by the late David V. Uihlein, the Harry A. Miller Club continues to preserve the legacy of Wisconsin's greatest racing engineer. Miller-designed cars won the Indianapolis 500 nine times, while Miller-powered cars added another three victories. Between 1923 and 1928, more than eighty percent of the Indianapolis starting field carried Miller engineering in one form or another—a remarkable statistic that illustrates his dominance during America's Golden Age of racing.

For anyone interested in Indy 500 racing history, the annual gathering remains one of those wonderfully authentic events where the automobiles are every bit as fascinating as the people who preserve them.

Ringbrothers – Where Engineering Meets Art

The Wisconsin trip was highlighted by spending time at Ringbrothers, whose work has elevated the term restomod into an art form. Although best known for reimagining classic American muscle cars, the company's reputation now extends well beyond Detroit iron. Their creations combine world-class craftsmanship with modern engineering while remaining remarkably faithful to the original character of each vehicle.

Last year's unveiling of "Octavia," their extraordinary 1971 Aston Martin DBS based carbon-fibre widebody at The Quail during Monterey Car Week, demonstrated that philosophy perfectly. It was one of those rare automobiles that captured everyone's focus - not because it shouted for attention, but because every detail had clearly been considered.

Beyond the headline builds, Ringbrothers has quietly become one of America's leading manufacturers of premium billet aluminum and carbon-fibre performance components, supplying enthusiasts and builders worldwide.

Their workshop is a reminder that some of today's most significant automotive craftsmanship is still being carried out by small, passionate teams rather than large manufacturers.

Discovering South Bend's Automotive Heritage

With my family’s Irish heritage my knowledge of South Bend revolved predominantly around Notre Dame football so attending the recent Concours d'Elegance at Copshaholm was my first opportunity to explore another side of the city: its rich automotive heritage.

The Concours d'Elegance at Copshaholm has quietly become one of the Midwest's most enjoyable concours weekends. Held on the beautiful grounds of the historic Oliver family estate, the event attracts outstanding automobiles from throughout the region while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere that encourages conversation between owners, restorers and enthusiasts.

Supporting this year's event were collectors and institutions including the Gilmore Car Museum, America's Packard Museum, the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum, the Pontiac Transportation Museum, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.

Adjacent to the mansion stands the Studebaker National Museum, which tells the remarkable story of one of America's oldest transportation companies.

Long before building automobiles, the Studebaker brothers were manufacturing wagons that served pioneers moving west across America, later supplying the U.S. military before transitioning into automobiles. Walking through the museum offers an appreciation not only for Studebaker's engineering achievements but also for the family's enormous influence on South Bend itself.

For anyone travelling through northern Indiana, both Copshaholm and the Studebaker Museum deserve a place on the itinerary.

Le Mans Classic Begins a New Era

One of the historic racing world's more significant announcements this summer came from France, where organizers confirmed that Le Mans Classic will now become an annual event. Rather than repeating the same format every two years, the event will alternate between two distinct themes.

Le Mans Classic Heritage will celebrate the pioneering decades of endurance racing, featuring automobiles from 1923 through 1975.

Le Mans Classic Legend will focus on the modern era, showcasing prototypes and GT cars that competed between 1976 and 2015.

The new structure allows both periods of Le Mans history to receive the attention they deserve while ensuring the event remains fresh for competitors and spectators alike.

One of the highlights during this year's Le Mans Classic was Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) bringing a collection of thirty-five historic NASCAR stock cars to France. American stock cars have always generated enormous curiosity among European enthusiasts. Many people associate NASCAR's Le Mans history with the highly successful Garage 56 Chevrolet Camaro that competed in 2023, but the story actually began almost fifty years earlier.

In 1976, Hershel McGriff's Dodge Charger and the Junie Donlavey entered Ford Torino became the first NASCAR-style stock cars to tackle the Circuit de la Sarthe. Although neither finished the race, they captured the imagination of French spectators, who had already embraced large American racing machines after Briggs Cunningham's famous Cadillac "Le Monstre" appeared at Le Mans in 1950.

From Shelby Cobras and Ford GT40s to Corvettes, Vipers, Panoz and Cadillac prototypes, American performance has always enjoyed a loyal following in France.

Goodwood Festival of Speed ~ Old Heroes Still Have Something to Say

This year's recent Goodwood Festival of Speed carried the theme "The Rivals – Epic Racing Duels," celebrating many of motorsport's greatest rivalries. Yet for many enthusiasts, one of the weekend's biggest stories came from an automobile that first appeared more than fifty years ago.

Jim Bartel's 1974 Shadow DN4 Can-Am, driven superbly by Alex Summers, delivered one of the standout performances of the entire Festival. Against a field dominated by the latest electric prototypes and modern racing technology, the big Chevrolet-powered Can-Am machine finished third overall in the Timed Shoot-Out, recording a remarkable 46.30-second climb.

For the third year in a row France’s Romain Dumas, fresh off his sixth win at the 104th Running of the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, drove his Ford Super Mustang Mach-E to the win at Goodwood’s Timed Shoot-Out, the climax of the Festival of Speed, with a time of 41.97 seconds. Dumas’ time was a second ahead of Dan Ticktum in the latest Formula E Gen4 which tripped the lights at 42.46. Alex Summers was third driving Jim Bartel’s black UOP Shadow DN4 Can-Am car falling just 4.33 seconds behind the outright event-winning electric Ford Super Mustang Mach-E.

Driven in 1974 by Jackie Oliver and George Follmer, the DN4 was the ultimate answer to Porsche’s previous dominance, sweeping the '74 Can Am Championship and securing UOP Shadow’s place in motorsport history.

Accompanying the Shadow at Goodwood was another extraordinary automobile from Jim Bartel's Michigan collection—the painstaking recreation of the 1909 Christie C7. Originally designed by the brilliant American engineer J. Walter Christie, the car featured a gigantic 20.3-litre V4 engine driving the front wheels—an astonishingly advanced concept for its time.

Driven by Barney Oldfield, the original machine was famously the first car to exceed 100 mph at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway before eventually being scrapped during the First World War. More than a century later, following nearly a decade of research and craftsmanship, Jim Bartel and his Michigan team recreated the legendary racer.

Museums Continue to Grow

Gilmore Car Museum Expands Again

America's largest automotive museum continues to grow. The Gilmore Car Museum recently celebrated the groundbreaking for two major additions: an expanded Performance Gallery and a new Education & Engagement Center, investments that will further strengthen its position as one of the world's premier automotive museums. Since opening in 1966, Gilmore has evolved into a remarkable ninety-acre campus bringing together multiple partner museums while preserving hundreds of significant automobiles spanning every era of motoring history. Its continued investment demonstrates something many of us have witnessed firsthand—the public's appetite for automotive history remains stronger than ever.

Preserving the Small Things That Tell the Big Stories

Another noteworthy development comes from Lincoln, Nebraska, where the Museum of American Speed is opening the International Model Builders' Museum Display. While full-size automobiles naturally capture most of the attention, scale models have long played an important role in preserving racing history, engineering concepts and design.

The museum's newest gallery brings together what is considered one of the world's finest collections of automotive scale models, complementing an already extraordinary collection of race cars, engines, speed equipment, memorabilia and historic artifacts. It serves as another reminder that preserving automotive history isn't only about saving the cars themselves—it's also about preserving the craftsmanship, creativity and stories that surround them.

Rétromobile New York

The Exhibition Continues to Take Shape

One of the most enjoyable aspects of helping build the inaugural Rétromobile New York has been watching the exhibition floor evolve week by week.

Each conversation introduces another fascinating company, another unique collection, or another individual passionate about preserving and celebrating automotive history. The result is an exhibition that is becoming increasingly diverse—bringing together heritage manufacturers, specialist dealers, restorers, designers, craftsmen, automobilia experts, collectors and enthusiasts under one roof.

As anticipation builds for the inaugural Rétromobile New York, taking place November 19–22, 2026 at the Javits Center, along with partners Richard Mille, Gooding Christie's and CARS, the growing exhibitor roster continues to showcase the event’s distinctive blend of automotive heritage, craftsmanship, and collector culture.

The latest wave of confirmed exhibitors reflects every facet of the enthusiast world. Automotive watch specialist Analog:Shift joins luxury automotive retailer ASG Miami, while French leather goods house Chapal brings more than a century of craftsmanship rooted in aviation and motorsport. Restoration expertise arrives through Newark Auto, whose factory-correct interiors have helped preserve some of the world's most significant collector cars. Visitors will also discover the enthusiast-driven perspective of Mouse Motors, the return of the iconic Dutch marque Spyker, and The Hangar Group, representing the evolving lifestyle surrounding automotive collecting through curated storage, hospitality, and community experiences.

Leading international classic car dealers participating also include Lukas Huni AG, Hyman Ltd, Fiskens Fine Historic Automobiles, Joe Macari Performance Cars and Girardo & Co.

We are also pleased to welcome Hagerty as the Official Collector Car Insurance Partner of Rétromobile New York. Few organizations have done more to support and grow the collector car hobby over the past three decades.

Beyond providing insurance, Hagerty has invested heavily in preserving automotive culture through events, educational initiatives, youth programs and media that encourage future generations to become involved in the hobby.

Their participation is another important step in establishing the inaugural New York event as an authentic gathering for enthusiasts rather than simply another trade exhibition.

With more exhibitors still to be revealed, Rétromobile New York is rapidly taking shape as one of the most significant collector car events to arrive in North America, bringing together the people, brands, and stories that continue to define automotive passion across generations.

If you're planning to visit New York this November, now is the perfect time to follow developments through our social media channels and register for event updates as we continue unveiling additional exhibitors, special displays, manufacturers, collectors and feature attractions throughout the coming weeks.

Worth Adding to Your Calendar

One of the enjoyable challenges every August is deciding where to go.

There are more outstanding automotive events than almost any enthusiast could possibly attend.

Among those well worth considering are:

Bonneville Speed Week - Aug 1-7

Hosted by the Southern California Timing Association, Speed Week remains one of motorsport's purest expressions of innovation and determination.

It was Sir Malcolm Campbell's record-breaking 301 mph run across the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1935 that established the vast Utah landscape as the world's ultimate proving ground for land speed records—a reputation it still enjoys today.

Lake Tahoe Concours d'Elegance ~ Aug 7 - 8

From horsepower to mahogany.

The annual Lake Tahoe Concours d'Elegance celebrates some of the world's finest classic wooden boats against one of North America's most spectacular backdrops.

For anyone who appreciates craftsmanship—whether on land or water—it is an unforgettable event.

Monterey Car Week ~ Aug 7 - 16

No automotive calendar would be complete without Monterey.

Beginning with the Monterey Pre-Reunion and Corkscrew Hillclimb before building toward the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, The Quail, Concoursi Italiano, auctions, Exotics on Broadway and culminating with the 75th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the week has become unlike anything else in the collector car world.

Each year at the Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum brings together key automotive figures to discuss some of the most interesting topics facing the collector car world today.

Forums are held from Thursday through Saturday of Pebble Beach Automotive Week at the Concours Village at Pebble Beach.

Whether your interests are concours cars, historic racing, design, auctions or simply spending time with fellow enthusiasts, Monterey offers something for everyone.

For a full listing of the car events on the Monterey Peninsula the SEE MONTEREY has a complete listing and details of the 10 days from Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 16, 2026. Also, Use www.mccarweek.com to check Monterey County’s interactive Car Week traffic map before you head out.

Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum - Oct 17

The Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum has announced that Chip Ganassi will receive its prestigious Spirit of Competition Award this October.

Few team owners have influenced modern American motorsport more than Ganassi, whose organizations have achieved success at Indianapolis, Daytona, Sebring, Le Mans, NASCAR and IndyCar over more than three decades.

It promises to be another memorable evening celebrating one of racing's great competitors.

One of the privileges of putting together this newsletter each month is the opportunity to visit remarkable places, meet fascinating people and discover new stories that continue to remind me why this hobby remains so special.

While the automobiles may first capture our attention, it is ultimately the people behind them—the collectors, restorers, designers, volunteers, historians and enthusiasts—who keep our automotive heritage alive.

Thank you once again for your many emails, suggestions and conversations throughout the month. I continue to be both humbled and encouraged by the number of readers who take the time to share their own stories and experiences. They are every bit as enjoyable to read as they are to receive.

Whether your travels this summer take you to Bonneville, Monterey, a local Cars & Coffee gathering or simply out for an early morning drive, I hope they include good roads, good friends and memorable automobiles.

Kind regards
