for 12th Annual Black & Gold Golf Event

President-Principal has announced the award recipients at the upcoming 12th annual Black & Gold Golf Event at the private Essex County Country Club on September 22nd.

Ms. Gina Hulings will receive the Golden Service Award for her display of exceptional service to the broader community and Hudson Catholic. Gina serves as the Director of the Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs / Tourism Development, since 2018. Her office and its initiatives are bringing rich cultural impacts to Jersey City and Hudson County in the Arts, History, Heritage, Film & TV, and Arts in Educations. She is married to JC Police Lieutenant Michael Hulings '90.

The wife and husband team of Ann Marie and Sandy Petrocelli will receive the John P. Higgins Award, which is given to those who have had significant impact on Hudson Catholic, reflective of John's life and values centered around engagement in school life and support of its students. The Gift of A Relationship

A delayed flight precluded what would have been a wonderful surprise at the Hudson Catholic Hall of Fame Induction event on May 15th in Carlstadt. Mr. Gary Cooney, a long-time business associate of William Cullen ’72 who was inducted that night, had every intention not only to make it to the event to surprise Bill, but also to convey a gift to Hudson Catholic in Bill’s honor.

Mr. Cooney is Vice Chairman at McGriff, Seibels & Williams, an insurance and risk management firm headquartered in Birmingham, AL with nearly $5B in annual revenue and a workforce of 15,000, but he is much more than that. He is a man of deep Catholic faith and Christian philanthropic focus, as proven by his allegiance and generosity to his alma maters, Birmingham’s John Carroll Catholic High School and Samford University.

Giving to a deep-rooted business relationship forged between Gary and Bill over 26 years in their chosen career paths, Gary was moved by Bill’s election to our Hall of Fame, thus planned to make a surprise appearance and gift to our school. When his airline had other plans for his night, he pivoted his timing to Bill’s firm, AEGIS’ conference celebrating their 50th year, where Cooney surprised Cullen with a very gracious note about their friendship and a check for $10,000 intended for Hudson Catholic, which manifested Cooney’s deep respect for Cullen as well as his awareness and appreciation for our school and its mission. Certainly, Hudson Catholic’s commonality with Cooney’s alma mater, John Carroll, was a compelling factor for making his gift in honor of Bill.

At John Carroll, a 78-year institution in his local community, Cooney is a member of their Class of ’69 and a driving force behind the school’s January groundbreaking for multi-million-dollar renovations of its athletic facilities in support of the Cavaliers’ 67 athletic teams. At Samford, where he has served as a Samford Overseer and on the Brock School of Business Advisory Board, he is the benefactor and a major donor to the Brock School of Business, providing the lead gift in the construction of Cooney Hall. He also provided a major gift for the construction of the Sullivan-Cooney Field House. Cooney played football for the Bulldogs as a student and was inducted into the Samford Sports Hall of Fame in 2019. He lives in Dallas, Texas.

Mr. Cooney exemplifies a deep respect for the Catholic educational mission and the continuous need that our schools have for more Catholic benefactors who understand, as he does, how schools such as John Carroll and Hudson Catholic are special places. Reinforcing that notion, Mr. Cooney has also expressed interest in visiting Hudson Catholic. We are deeply grateful for his generous gift to benefit our young Hawks, and extend a warm invitation to Mr. Cooney to visit The Home of The Hawks at a time of his choosing, at which time we will be thrilled to tour him around our urban campus and let him see and interact with the very special students that make Hudson Catholic a compelling visit.

Mr. Gary Cooney, a Friend of Hudson Catholic,

presenting Bill Cullen '72 with a gift of $10,000

Help Secure Our Future

Gift Securities to Hudson Catholic

We started this novel program for maximizing the value of gifts made to Hudson Catholic in the past six months. And it was well-received, as three alumni made such gifts from their brokerage accounts for total value of $60,000!

We hope that this mode of charitable giving catches on among our alumni ranks, particularly with the classes of the 60s through 90s who have amassed investment portfolios and may be looking to offset some capital gains with donations that are non-taxable events. We think this is a great strategy for people fortunate enough to find themselves in position to do so.

There is no bad time of the year to make such a gift, but you know we'll be reminding you in December as we get closer to year-end and you may be plotting tax strategy for the year. For now, we'll leave you with the headline message and the below click-box that will take you to instructions for following the process.

26th Signum Fidei Award Recipient

At this year's Commencement ceremony, President-Principal Terry Matthews bestowed the prestigious Signum Fidei award to the 26th recipient in school history, Ms. Iris Changuin, who has given tirelessly of herself for 35 years of service to the community as a member of the Facilities Dept. Any time a visitor to the campus remarks about how well-maintained it is, they are paying a compliment and showing gratitude to Iris, an unsung Hero of Hudson Catholic. Thank you, Iris, for all you have done and continue to do to look after our young Hawks and faculty!

Comings and Goings

We are pleased to welcome Mr. Justin Gonzalez to the Hudson Catholic Administrative Team and into the role of Director of Enrollment Management/Admissions, succeeding Jaime DeLeon who resigned at the end of the past school year after seven years of service to Hudson Catholic. Mr. Gonzalez comes to us from a similar role at Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair. He brings experience in the role, and familiarity with the mission of Catholic education at the high school level. Justin holds a B.A. from Scranton University, a Master of Education from Northcentral University, and is a Doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership and Administration at Liberty University. Prior roles included Director of Student Services, and Admissions Coordinator at CDE Career Institute in Paterson, and Admissions Representative at Eastwick College in New Jersey.

Board of Consultors member Tom Donatacci '81, having completed six years of service, is standing down from the Board in the spirit of providing opportunity for new membership and accompanying new experience and skills. Additionally, President Matthews has appointed William Cullen '72 to the Board, and Bill has assumed the role of Chair, replacing Brian Neary '69 who resigned from his long-serving role in April. Terry expects to be naming more appointees in the near future.

Former Hawk Boys Basketball standout Kavon Stewart '13 returns to The Nest as Varsity Head Coach, replacing the coach from his glory days, Nick Mariniello. During his school days as an All County selection, he was a key part of the Hawks' rise into a state power program. Following Hudson Catholic, Kavon went on to play Division I ball for the Robert Morris University Colonials, making him the 3rd/4th Hawk to play in March Madness at the same time as Georgetown's Reggie Cameron, his Hawk teammate, and preceding Hawks five through ten, while earning his way on to the Dean's List and a degree in Communications. He established his coaching chops with Paterson Eastside HS and, most recently, as Assistant Coach at Morristown Beard HS. Welcome home, Kavon!

Wall of Honor member and Hudson Catholic Track legend Alexander Long '73 is joining the ranks of the Hudson Catholic coaching staff this fall as Assistant Track Coach, working with Head Coach Anthony Campbell to help our middle distance harriers be their best. Al is a member of the Hudson County Sports Hall of Fame, Track Coach of St. Henry Grammar School of Bayonne, and is an avid fan of Hawk Track, recently traveling to Philadelphia to cheer on the Hawk Boys and Girls relay teams competing in the prestigious Penn Relays.

Our new Football Coach is Yasir Thomas, who has been elevated from the staff of the late Lamar McKnight. Yasir served last year as the Assistant Coach for Wide Receivers and Defensive Backs. He played his college ball at Lafayette, where he co-captained the Leopards and earned First Team All Patriot League honors as a Defensive Back.

The Hawks have an ambitious nine-game independent schedule this year, and will open on August 28th vs. Hanover Park at Caven Point at 6pm. The highlight of the schedule comes early, as the Hawks will play in the Lamar McKnight Classic on September 5th, 12pm vs. Newark Collegiate Academy at Hinchcliff Stadium in Paterson that seats 7,500 and sits atop the Great Falls. The schedule fills out with Hoboken (H), Newark Central (A), Snyder (A), Immaculata (H), Bayonne (H), Kennedy (A), and concludes with Morris Catholic (H) on October 31st at 7pm.

Astros in Training

Our Space Campers Alejandro Diaz, Jadyra Amaya-Garcia, and Annalise DeLeon, went off for their novel training experience to Huntsville, AL on Sunday, July 13th. They experienced scuba diving and rock climbing, made and launched a rocket, wore spacesuits, flew a spacecraft simulator, learned how to give CPR in space, tried a 1/6th gravity chair, and controlled a Mars rover. They also made some new friends. They were not permitted use of cell phones, their quarters did not have wifi, and they had a 7am wake up each morning. Most of all, they had a great time, learned a lot, earned one credit hour of freshman-level general science from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in this college-accredited program, and had a once in a lifetime adventure.

The below photo is of scuba diving Jaydra in the Underwater Astronaut Training exercise to experience neutral buoyancy. Our three "astronauts" returned safely to their more earthly pursuits at home and reported they had a wonderful trip. -- in and out of this world.

It should do all our hearts good to see the kinds of life experiences that Hawk supporters help to make possible for our Hawks!

Hawk Speedsters Peak in Nationals

During the summer, the Hawk Track team represented our school in an amazing fashion at the Adidas National Championships in North Carolina. Our 4x400m Mixed Relay Team placed 3rd overall, earning All-American status for the runners -- Aiden Smith, Kimora Sims, Chad Perkins and Breanna Miller. The Boys 800m Sprint Medley team of Christien Alerte, Donte Smith, Chad Perkins and Aiden Smith placed 5th, narrowly missing 3rd place by .03 of a second, but still earning All-American honors with a time of 1:34.29. 4th place ran 1:34.28 and 3rd place ran 1:34.26. “Missed it by thatmuch!”

The Student/Partner Alliance - Hudson Catholic Connection

The Student/Partner Alliance is an integral component in Hudson Catholic's overall ability to provide tuition assistance to many of the 80% of Hawk families who apply for financial aid each year. For 32 years, they have been committed to supporting Catholic high schools in northern New Jersey through scholarship and mentoring support for select students. Along with Hudson Catholic, the S/PA supports St. Dominic Academy, St. Benedict's Prep, St. Vincent Academy, and Roselle Catholic.

The S/PA Annual Report provides insight into the organization's efforts and the supporters who stand behind it. Since its inception in 1993, the S/PA has granted 2,450 scholarships, with 99% of recipients going on to college admissions, post-secondary schooling, or armed services. This past year, the S/PA supported 180 students with mentoring and $570,000 in scholarships.

The Student/Partner Alliance is led by Executive Director Ms. Kristin Shannon (pictured). Their annual report states that 100% of its partner donations flow directly to student recipients. The organization is supported by 26 corporates and foundations that provide 30% of its funding. Other sources of funding emanate from the 16 members of its Board of Trustees (22%), Individuals (20%), Fundraising Events (11%), Campaigns (11%), and Investments (6%).

Along with providing mentoring support, the S/PA awarded $121,000 in financial aid to 40 Hawk students this year alone, including 14 seniors and, since 2019, has provided $660,000 in support of Hudson Catholic students and families. To which we shout out a gigantic THANK YOU!!!

During this past school year, S/PA corporate supporter, Blackstone, sent employee volunteers who are financial professionals to Hudson Catholic to participate in an information session that educated our students about careers in finance.

Call For Mentors

The Student Partner/Alliance is planning for the upcoming school year and interested in receiving new volunteer Mentors for the Class of 2029!

You can help to make a difference in a motivated high school student's future.

A "Mentor" is a trusted and experienced individual willing to make a four year commitment to provide coaching and advice to a Hawk student who is receiving financial aid from the S/PA. For more information about mentoring with the Student/Partner Alliance, visit their website at https://studentpartneralliance.org/volunteer/

Committed. Vincent Kind '25 will be playing football at St. Thomas University in southern Florida.

Capitol Idea. Isabel Ventimilla ‘19 is interning at the U.S. House of Representatives. Since entering and graduating from the University of Richmond, she has compiled quite an impressive string of experiences at the front end of her professional career. In Summer 2023, she served as a Pharmacology Intern at Abbvie in Worcester, MA. Her experience in the Summer of 2024 was as a Judicial Law Intern as part of the Sonia and Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, performing legal research and writing for Magistrate Judge Willis.

Can't Tell the Players Without a Globe. We try to keep up with our Hawks who are playing internationally, but there is always the chance that our knowledge could run behind our Hawks' flight schedules. The latest we have is Louis King '18 fared quite well in China and has recently returned to play in Puerto Rico, and Luther Muhammad '18, whose basketball journey has taken him from Finland to Poland to New Zealand to Israel, has now returned him to New Zealand. Perhaps he will return to Hudson to teach World Geography!

Passion of The Park. Filmmaker and photojournalist Joseph Cruz '17 has announced his upcoming film, a documentary about the historic Park Theatre in Union City, home of the Lenten 'America's Oberammergau', or Veronica's Veil: The Passion Play, the longest running production in the United States of Jesus Christ's last days. Now called the Park Performing Arts Center, the theatre opened on 32nd Street in then-Union Hill in 1931, built by the Archdiocese of Newark as part of the Holy Family Church complex. The Passion Play has been performed there ever since, long under the watchful eye and guidance of the late Pastor Kevin Ashe. The theatre's centerpiece is its vaulted 1,400 seat proscenium, and its original Moller Organ, containing 1,390 pipes in two pipe chambers, a 25-note chime, and a 61-note Deagan Harp, remains operational. Little-known fact: Harry Chapin played a benefit concert there on February 12, 1977.

He's Got a Bridge to Sell You On. Ben Senger '02 is part of the design team among AECOM Transportation's Philadelphia and Conshohocken offices that completed the Schuylkill Banks River Trail featuring PA's first cable-stayed bridge, to close out the 120-mile trail from Reading to South Philly.

Movin' On Up. James Bailey '99 has been promoted to Director, Site Technologies and Launch at Pfizer in Wake Forest, NC.

It's Not Your Father's LaGuardia. Curt Zegler ’89. His new Terminal C project for Delta Airlines by Turner Construction has been recognized with the 2024 CMAA Metro NY/NJ Chapter Project of the Year Award in the greater than $100M Building & Infrastructure Category. The Terminal features 1.3 million square feet, LEED Silver Certification, the largest Delta Sky Club in the system, curated New York art, and light-filled spaces that add to the passenger experience.

Super. John Benetti '88 is an Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Educational Programs for the Union City Board of Education.

Responding to the Texas Floods. William Keegan '73. In the aftermath of the devastating flooding in Texas, Bill is directing HEART 9/11's skilled and experienced Rapid Response Team that has deployed to assist survivors in Central Texas. This team is on the front lines providing essential support for flood recovery, including locating missing individuals, debris removal and muck-outs, chainsaw work, and supply distribution to impacted families and communities.

The Newest Hawk Author, Joe Slota '72, just published his magnum opus of life growing up in the streets of Jersey City and reaching all the way to corporate boardrooms, a journey that many Hawks can identify with. You can read about it in Joe's unique storytelling mode, in From The Streets to Global Seats, available from Amazon. Joe now joins his '72 Classmate Michael Londrigan in the published ranks, along with 20 other Hawk Authors and their 78 publications in our Library of Hawks, at https://hudsoncatholic.org/library-of-hawks.

A Man For All Seasons. Nelson Baez '69 scored the very first touchdown in Hawk Varsity Football history, served his country in the U.S. Army in the early 70s, and he is one of 20 musicians in the Class of '69.

Tell Us

Just one of many things that unites us as Hawks is that Hudson Catholic alumni spread around the nation and the world are making incredible contributions to their communities, professions, and to Hudson Catholic.

If you know of an exceptional Hawk deserving recognition, we invite you to share why, by writing to advancement@hudsoncatholic.org with examples of Hawk alumni and alumnae leadership, service, and achievement...........and occasional whimsy.

Hawk Gatherings

Honorary 50-Year Hawk Rich Bulwicz, of the Brothers Bulwicz (with Steve '70, left, and Mark '73, center) recently enjoyed a family birthday celebration when Mark travelled 'home' from Ireland. (See 'Nice Shirt!' feature, next). Rich entered Hudson Catholic in 1971 and left in '73 when middle brother Mark '73 graduated and the family moved to Whippany. He was on the basketball team and enjoyed many good relationships with his classmates, and still keeps in touch with a few from his early days in the Heights and at St. Ann's. Rich is planning to attend the '75 Reunion coming in October.

Nice Shirt!

And, Hawks Abroad, and Aboard!

Look closely! That is seafaring Mark Bulwicz '73 dressing up the RMS Queen Mary 2 with the black and gold on his Atlantic Crossing to celebrate a big birthday number with his stateside family. Now there's a Hawk who doesn't leave home without it!

Hawk Legacies

In what will become an annual tradition, three Hawk alums handed their sons diplomas at Graduation. Our newest Legacy Hawk alumni are Jude Wilson '25 & Shawn Wilson ’83; Craig Chowanec '25 & Walter Chowanec ’90; and, Javier Garcia ’93 & Javier Garcia Jr. '25.

That we know of, this now makes 48 Hawk Legacies involving 40 alumni parents, 41 alumni sons, and seven alumni daughters!

Blast From the Past

or, 'Now, the Truth Comes Out'!

The Jersey Journal of the day documents it as a fairly nondescript congratulatory photo opp about two Hawks who produced noteworthy oratory about World War II and its Veterans. (Editor's note: That is Thomas F.X. Bender, Sr. on the left, father of Thomas F.X. Bender, Jr. '69 and grandfather of Thomas F.X. Bender III, '04 / USA. It was for Bob Sadowski '74, on right, anyway. At a recent Hawk Gathering in Avon-by-the-Sea, Brian Altano '74 regaled fellow Hawks with a story behind the story. His award was for his talk about the VFW Post located only a few blocks from his house on Grace Street, where the WWII vets would congregate and the neighborhood kids would visit, ask questions, and listen to their stories: "Did you ever meet George Patton?"  "What was Ike like?" "What about Normandy Beach?" Clear and simple at face value. Having collected a second place prize-winning $25 Savings Bond but not wanting to wait the full seven years of maturity to earn the face value of the bond, Brian recalled immediately venturing over to the nearby Provident Bank and redeeming the bond for its then-present day value of $12.50. That is when the fun started. Naturally, like a script right out of The Honeymooners, the very next day, Principal Brother Timothy Dean asked Brian to bring his bond to school so that they could take a photograph that would appear in the paper. As a result, Brian's mother had to go to the bank and buy ANOTHER bond that Brian could use in the photograph. Brian remembers that as one of the few times in her life that his mother really got angry.
