"Challenge Accepted 2025-2026"

Building on our Progress

Welcome back and Happy New Year to all of our families!

As we step into the 2026 calendar year, we are focused on helping our students find their rhythm again through steady routines and consistent effort. The second half of the year is a unique time; it’s when we get to see students take everything they learned during the first semester and really put it into practice. By applying those earlier lessons to more complex challenges, students can see just how much they’ve grown.

We look forward to a productive semester of hard work and meaningful progress, and we thank you for your partnership in keeping these positive habits going at home.

Make it a Habit

Finding simple ways to connect as a family can make a huge difference! We encourage you to explore small, everyday habits that boost engagement and strengthen your bond. Whether it’s a shared meal, a tech-free walk, or a quick "highs and lows" chat before bed, these simple routines—when repeated—can significantly improve our overall health and well-being. Start small, stay consistent, and watch how these moments shift the energy in your home!

5-Minute "Quick Connection" Ideas

  • The "High-Low-Buffalo" Chat: At dinner or bedtime, have everyone share one good thing from their day (high), one challenging thing (low), and one random or funny thing (buffalo).

  • The Tech-Free "Power Hour" (or 5 Minutes!): Put all phones in a "parking lot" basket for just a few minutes to have an uninterrupted conversation or play a quick round of "Would You Rather?"

  • The Gratitude Jar: Keep a jar and some scraps of paper in the kitchen. Once a day, have everyone write down one thing they are thankful for and drop it in.

  • The "Drive-Time" DJ: On the way to school, let a different family member pick one song that makes them happy, and talk about why it's a favorite.

  • The Family High-Five: Create a special family handshake or a "good luck" high-five ritual before everyone heads out the door in the morning.

Headed to Regionals!

We are thrilled to announce that two of our outstanding students have placed in the Student of the Year Competition for our zone!

Please join us in congratulating Lani Traylor (5th grade, SLU Lab School) and Carly Montz (12th grade, Ponchatoula High School) for this incredible achievement! Their hard work, leadership, and dedication to excellence have earned them a spot at the Regional Competition!

We are so proud to have these scholars representing Tangipahoa Parish Schools!

January is School Board Recognition Month!

We wanted to take a moment to shine a light on the dedicated volunteers who help keep our school ship sailing smoothly. Our board members spend a lot of their "free" time in meetings and digging into the details of school life, all to make sure our students have the best possible environment to learn in. They do a lot of the heavy lifting behind the scenes, and we’re so lucky to have such a committed group looking out for our kids. If you see them around town, feel free to give them a high-five or a quick "thank you" for everything they do!

Exploring a Balanced Calendar

As we continue to explore ways to enhance our students' school experience, we invite you to join us in learning more about the possibility of transitioning to a balanced academic calendar. Unlike a traditional schedule, a balanced calendar spreads instructional days more evenly throughout the year, featuring shorter, more frequent breaks that help reduce "summer slide" and provide regular opportunities for rest and enrichment.

We understand that a shift like this is a significant conversation for our families, which is why we’ve curated a dedicated section on our website with FAQs, recorded discussions, and resources on the impacts of adopting the Balanced Calendar way of life.

Please visit our site to stay informed as we work together to plan what is best for the children of our community.

TPSS ADVANCED COLLEGE & CAREER

Infographic Created by: Mallory Giavotella, student of TPSS ACCMC

Advance your Studies

Did you know that TPSS offers our upcoming juniors and seniors the opportunity to enroll in specialized classes at our Advanced College & Career Magnet Center? This means that during their 11th and 12th grade years, they are able to travel to the center during the regular school day to participate in specialzed classes that their homebased high school may not offer. TPSS provides transportation, or students are able to communte to the center themselves. Please go online to see available courses, as well as answers to any questions you may have.

NOW IS THE TIME TO APPLY! If your child is currently in the 10th or 11th grade, check your email for more information.

ATTENDANCE

Step Out on the Right Foot.

It's our first week back at the start of a brand new year. Let's keep the momentum going by making it a priority to be at school.

It's important to not only show up, but to be present mentally as well. Participate, ask questions, and engage in the lessons.

Check your child's attendance in the Student Progress Center (SPC). Turn in any parent or doctor notes for days missed, so that those absences can be marked as excused. Under a new policy change, students may now submit up to 5 parent-written excuses per semester to be considered excused absences.

Healthy Habits Promote Good School Attendance

One challenge we are all too familiar with is cold and flu season. To support everyone's well-being during this time, TPSS is implementing proactive, rigorous cleaning protocols. Our team continues to regularly disinfect classrooms, common areas, and all high-touch surfaces to ensure a safe environment for all students and employees.

Here are some measures everyone can take to help keep our school community healthy:

  • Keep students home if they are feeling unwell. If your child has symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or other signs of illness, please allow them time to rest and recover before returning to school.
  • *Remember to send a Doctor's note or a written parent note when your child returns to school. As TPSS policy states, parents can send 5 parent notes to have absences excused during the 2nd semester.
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the inside of your elbow
  • Avoid touching your face - germs often enter your body through the eyes, nose, and mouth
