The Year of Housing Must Include Preserving Homes
When Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson declared 2026 the Year of Housing, he sent an important message: housing matters. As the CEO of Revitalize Milwaukee, I want to sincerely thank Mayor Johnson for making housing a priority and for his willingness to keep an open door to organizations like Revitalize Milwaukee that are working every day to preserve the homes and neighborhoods that define our city.
Meaningful progress begins with listening, and Mayor Johnson has demonstrated a genuine commitment to bringing partners to the table to address Milwaukee's housing challenges. That collaboration is essential because solving our housing crisis requires more than building new homes, it requires protecting the homes and families we already have.
Every day at Revitalize Milwaukee, we meet homeowners who have spent decades building their lives in the neighborhoods they love. They raised their children there. They celebrated birthdays, graduations, holidays, and family milestones under those roofs. Their neighbors became lifelong friends. Their church, grocery store, and community are all within reach. Their home is more than lumber and bricks, it is their life's story.
What these homeowners tell us is remarkably consistent. They do not want a new home. They do not want to leave their neighborhood. They simply want the home they love to be safe. The answer is not always demolition or redevelopment.
Often, the answer is repair.
This is where Revitalize Milwaukee comes in.
These are not cosmetic improvements. They are life-changing investments.
Too often, we measure housing success only by the number of new units constructed. Those investments are important, but we must also measure success by the number of families who never have to leave the homes they already cherish. Preservation deserves to stand alongside development.
Milwaukee has thousands of homeowners who are one major repair away from crisis. With timely intervention, many of those homes can remain safe, healthy, and occupied for years to come. That is a wise investment; not only for the homeowner, but for the entire community.
As we celebrate the Year of Housing, I hope we continue expanding the conversation to include the families who have already invested their hearts in Milwaukee. They deserve every opportunity to remain where they belong.
On behalf of everyone at Revitalize Milwaukee, I thank Mayor Cavalier Johnson for recognizing that housing must remain a citywide priority and for his willingness to partner with organizations committed to serving our residents. Together, we can ensure that Milwaukee is not only building for the future but also preserving the homes, neighborhoods, and communities that have made this city strong for generations.
Because sometimes the most powerful housing solution isn't building a new house. It's helping someone stay in the one they already call home.
With gratitude,
Melanie Roach, CEO
