I have been involved with Ohio-ACC for the past several years as a CV team committee member and am looking forward to this new role as the CV team chapter representative. I am so happy to be working with all of you and look forward to lots of positive interactions!

Increasing Access to Quality Cardiac Rehabilitation Care Act of 2021
Ask your Member of Congress to cosponsor the Increasing Access to Quality Cardiac Rehabilitation Care Act of 2021. This bill would:

  • Authorize physician assistants (PAs), nurse practitioners (NPs), and clinical nurse specialists (CNSs), referred to as advanced practice providers (APPs), to begin ordering and supervising patients’ day-to-day cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation care (CR/PR) in 2022. These providers are already able to supervise these services beginning in 2024 – this legislation moves that date up.
  • Eliminate obstacles, delays, and unnecessary paperwork that can prevent patients from beginning rehabilitation services that are needed on a timely basis.
  • Take important steps to increase access to critical cardiac rehabilitation services, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

Billing for APP Services
Optimizing your skills to document and bill will enhance your value to your organization. Billing for APP services has always been challenging due to a variety of clinical settings where the CV Team provider practices. Telehealth and virtual visits have also become more common over the past year.

Another requirement is one service, one payment. An APP's services (other than “incident to” services) are reimbursed at 85 percent of the amount for participating physician fee schedule. Medicare will make this payment as long as it has not already paid a facility or provider for the same APP services. For example, if an APP employed by a hospital treats a Medicare patient, Medicare will not pay the hospital under Part B for those services if it has already paid the hospital for the NP's services under Part A. In short, Medicare will not pay twice for the same NP service. An HCPCS modifier can be added to the CPT codes for APP services billed.

These modifiers include -AK (NP, rural, team member), -AV (NP, rural, not a team member) and -AL (NP, non-rural, team member).

In addition to consulting with your billing and revenue managers, here are some resources to help you navigate the system.

New Infographics Illustrate How OTC & Herbal Products Interact with the CV System
A CV Team Section writing group, led by Vicki L. Groo, PharmD, Illinois Chapter CV Team State Liaison, created two new infographics to illustrate how over-the-counter (OTC) and herbal supplements interact with the cardiovascular system and medications for certain cardiovascular conditions. The infographics identify potentially harmful drug-drug interactions and include tables of common OTC and herbal supplements, their effects on the cardiovascular system, and recommendations for use. Download these infographics and view the entire library of infographics for clinicians at ACC.org/Infographics. For all patient-facing infographics, visit CardioSmart.org/Posters.
