Fall 2024

President's Letter

The annual Gallery 21 Show in Balboa Park started November 5th with intake of art and painting all the pedestals for the show. The reception was well attended and lots of fun.

Elections for the upcoming year start in November. Members will receive an email to nominate candidates for Vice President and Secretary positions on November 15th. Then a ballet will be emailed to you to vote on December 1st and you will have till December 15th to return it. Please send back your vote because we need your participation to meet our non-profit requirements.

Our annual Holiday party will be on January 4th. It will be held at Krista Heron’s home with a theme this year of “Walk like an Egyptian”.

Our next general meeting to start off the 2025 year will be Sunday, January 19 at Tom Marosz studio. It is a fun meeting where you get to see and talk with fellow members while enjoying a potluck afterwards. We also want to hear your ideas for anything you might be interested in for the year. More information will be sent out when it gets closer.

Recent Workshops

Coldworking

Tom has become the "professor" that the glass artists in the AGASC go to when they need to know how to cold-work a piece, what adhesive to use or they have a question about dichroic glass. He uses his cold working, cutting, and polishing skills to create glass sculptures such as the stunning winged pieces and the cube sculptures. For the coldworking workshop that was held on Oct 19-20 members got hands-on experience over the two days to dive in and learn new finishing techniques.

Adhesives

The following weekend Oct 26 Tom held an adhesive workshop for four hours to help demystify what adhesives work best in different glass to glass and glass to metal applications. This was very helpful as many of us struggle to know how to make mounting and hanging of our work secure.

"Fragile Palette, The Art of Glass"

AGASC Show At the Coronado Library

The Library in Coronado hosted a show for the AGASC this summer from July 14 to September 30. Krista Heron put together a video show of our members working that run throughout the show so visitors could get a glimpse of how some of the pieces were made and finished. The library also posted a picture and info on each artist. The artist reception was held on July 14th. Krista did a wonderful job of making and arranging a beautiful table of hors de ores that looked like an art exhibit! The library staff was wonderful, and we all appreciated the opportunity to exhibit our Glass Art in such a beautiful and well trafficked venue.

Galaxy of Glass

The Annual Glass show at the Fallbrook Art Center ran from Aug. 31, 2024 - Oct. 4, 2024

The Artist reception was Friday August 30th. Our member, Rina Fehrensen's sculpture won best of Show. This show is a favorite with our association because of the professional presentation and great lighting. Sales were very good and this year the jury fee was waived so more of our members could participate.

Visit to Jon Gibbons Studio

by Jack Wade

Jon Simpson and I were passing through Eureka, CA and thought we would stop in John Gibbons studio to say hi. We found out he has a solo show in Eureka CA. A former member of the AGASC, until he moved to Eureka, John Gibbons had a solo show at the Morris Graves Museum.

Front Porch Gallery ‘Mentors’ art and poetry exhibit

by Susan Hirsch

This show was a blend of art and poetry pieces highlighting what collaboration, influence and inspiration between a diverse group of artists and poets can create. I chose to work with a poet as much of my work contains words, lyrics and poetry. I worked with Angela Schweers who wrote a poem "Smoke Sesh" to go with my sculpture the Smoker. I engraved her poem on the base and added leaves to his hat and to fit the theme he "smokes" with an incense cone hidden in his head. It was fun to collaborate with a poet on my piece. The show ran from Aug. 14 to Oct. 9 at 2903 Carlsbad Blvd. The opening reception was held on Aug. 17 from 12 to 2 p.m. featuring words from some participating artists and poets.
